I started writing compat32pkg late April. At the begining it was only for my personal use (and for the fun), and, it was only dedicated to automate updates of 32-bit part of the 32-bit compatibility layer (AlienBob's multilib). Afterward, I improved it, I added some features and now, it provides all the necessary for managing (converting,installing,upgrading,remove) of 32-bit part of the multilib, and others packages which are part of Slackware-32 like firefox, seamonkey, jre,. As I guess it could be usefull for others, I decided to publish it. So, if you want it, you can grab it at [URL]... But before that, I guess that you want to know a bit more about it. So, let's go. The installation of compat32pkg is done as for any Slackware package, using the command installpkg :

If you want to convert packages to format compat32 only, you have to use compat32pkg in mode --convert instead of --install :

The formats include M4A, FLAC, MP3, and OGG. What I would like to do is convert the entire directory, keeping subfolders and ID3 information intact. I would preferably like to be able to do this with a single script.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64. I am fairly adept with BASH and the command line, so I foresee no problems there. If I have to write my own script, these are the things I'm not sure about:
(a) maintaining the directory structure.
(b) how to tell the script which converter tool to use (LAME, FLAC, etc.
(c) keeping ID3 tags.
What does upgrading mean? does it imply replacing the older packages with new without reinstalling the entire OS or Reinstalling the new version keeping into view the existing package list. Can I upgrade the Ubuntu 9.1 amd 64 with Ubuntu 9.1 i386 version using the alternate installation CD

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with the latest Fedora. Installed it cleanly on a machine with Gigabyte H55M-S2 with Intel Core i3. There seems to be no sound and I checked to see if anything is muted but is not. The manual says that the sound chip is ALC888B so this could be the first problem. Any ide how I can make it work? Here is a dump of some things on my system.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use this old notebook as a poor man's netbook. I installed Slackware 13 on it and find that the touchscreen uses the Xorg evdev driver. It starts up with both acceleration and incorrect calibration. Xinput can be used to successfully remove the acceleration. However, using xinput to set the calibration does nothing to the behavior, although the settings do seem to get registered.
After bringing up X:

In addition to the calibration not working, no button events seem to be generated or reported by xinput.
I did a lot of searching for a solution and see that many people use evtouch [URL] for their Lifebooks. However, none of the binaries seem to work with the Xorg build that Slackware uses (ABI version mismatch) and I have no idea of how to fix that. I am open to recompiling Xorg to use evtouch, installing the Xorg sources that were used in building Slackware 13. They don't seem to be part of the distribution.

I noticed that the official Slackware packages don't contain static libraries. The SlackBuild scripts from slackbuilds.org or from Slackware DVD usually contain --disable-static option to prevent building the .a file. And if configure script doesn't allow such option, the .a file is deleted before the package is created.I am wondering what is the reason for that? Is it just the matter of conserving disk space? Are there also other reasons?

My question here is that before installing the multilib libraries, how does a 32 bit program differ from a 64 bit. For instance, and here I am showing my ignorance, but surely if I download a program source, shouldn't the resultant binary following compiling and building be a result of the platform it is built on, or does the source code include references to whether it is a 32 or 64 bit program.
Only asking as I have just gone to Slack13_x64, and was hoping that wine might build as a 64bit program. Or, am I stuck with having to install the multilib libs?
I have a copy of Win 7 that's saved on a disc as a UDF directory (yes, it's legal!). I need to convert the UDF to a bootable iso. Does anyone know how to do that?

For whatever reason, XBMC refuses to play the audio. Xine plays the audio but with a distressing static noise. MPlayer and Kaffeine play the files fine. The bottom line is XBMC and Xine seem to dislike pcm_u8 audio, or the way the audio is streamed with the video.I also cannot fast-forward the movies with some players, such as MPlayer or SMPlayer.
I haven't found whether I can select a different format with the camera, but to avoid player problems I'd like to convert the videos. My primary focus is playing in XBMC and Xine because I have both apps configured to be controlled with a remote control. What is the most compatible format to convert? This is with 12.2 or 13.0. I have ffmpeg, mplayer, and mencoder installed and probably all or most codecs I could use.
Any chance to have KDE 4.5.1 packages for Slackware current?

IMHO it perfectly fits to distro's KISS philosophy, is very small and packaging maintenance is very easy (only glibc dependency, simple compilation and installation proces). Since it works for me I want to share it. I've added a configurationfile, so anyone can adapt it to his/her requirements.
Note: I don't want to prevent anyone from buying the official DVD, but maybe you'll find it usefull to download the packages when performing a fresh install of current.
Advantage of the script is that one has less downloadsize and one can exclude package-series from downloading (in the conf-file).
Here is the configfile, it has to be saved as "getslack.conf" in the same directory as the script.

i'm done selecting packages from the slackware installer and the installation was finished. the problem is that when i tried to 'startx' it gives me an error.. i think there's some missing packages. how to go to the selection of packages again?
