Slackware :: XINE In 64-13.37 - No VDPAU Driver?
May 18, 2011
As the title says, I don't see a 'VDPAU' option for video driver, in XINE config? I have installed Nvidia proprietary drivers (260.something) and XINE user level is set to 'Master of the known universe'...

I have just installed Slackware 13.1 32bit. My hardware is a P-4 3Ghz with a gig of ram. Intel on board graphic and sound.
This is the best implementation of Kde I have used so far. Slack 13.1 is amazing. The install went very well and everything we configured properly.
My problem is when I start Kde or try to shut dowm or logout I get the same error for knotify: Unable to use the Xine Multimedia Backend:Could not find plugin 'Xine' for application 'Knotify'
I get this same error with the application name at the end of it. If I open amarok I get the same error message with amarok at the end. If I try to click a misic file in dolphin same error message.
When I try to shut down or log out from menu I get the xine error and nothing happens. The only way I can log out is Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to get to the KDM log in screen and then I am able to shut down from the menu.
I have been looking on the forum and using google but have found nothing useful.
The error pops up when I try to play a cd or music on the hard drive.

I have xine in gnome on Slackware 13.1. On every other distro I've used, even when xine is in fullscreen, I can still hit 'g' to pop up the controls. But in slackware 13.1, fullscreen hides the controls. Anybody know if it's some strange way the slackware package was built? Or is a xine version thing where this behavior was changed? Or something with gnome? I don't recall the other versions of xine I had on other distros, but even Mint 8 that I have installed right now shows me the controls even in fullscreen.

My DVD player is on /dev/hdc but when I put 'xine /dev/hdc' on the command line I get an error saying 'There is no demuxer plugin available to handle /dev/hdc'. If I use the mount point /media/DVD instead of /dev/hdc it works fine. I am trying to get DVDs to play automatically but I can't see how to get xine to look for /media/DVD instead of /dev/hdc. I have tried changing the location on the Settings -> Media tab, and the line which says 'directory a media in dvd device will be mounted' in ~/.xine/config but neither worked.

I was trying to play an MP4 (h264) video from Meet The Gimp (in particular, this one) but both xine and dragonplayer would play a couple of seconds of it (poorly) and then segfault and die. The error spew looked like:
Code:
$ xine meetthegimp152.mp4
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.5.
(c) 2000-2007 The xine Team.
[code]....
dragonplayer emitted the same output, so I assumed it was something amiss in one of the libraries they both use. mplayer plays the video, so I'm not without recourse, but it would be nice to know what's up with the segfaults. Anyone seen something like this?
System specifics, if it matters:
Slackware 13.1 (freshly installed)
AMD64x2 5600
4GiB SRAM
GeForce 8800 GTX w/ 768MiB VRAM

I'm trying to bring my Slackware system back to life as my XP HDD is dying... I've got everything working except for my audio. I got a new motherboard (ASRock P43DE3) and it has a VIA VT1708S as the onboard audio. Is there any way I can get this working without rebuilding the kernel?

I started a thread asking for advice in the hardware forum. I didn't want to post a duplicate thread, but I was unable to get it moved here, so I'm kindly asking you slackers to help me install the aforementioned driver.

I've tried a few different ways to install the ATI graphics driver "fglrx" to get 3D acceleration. If I try to install using the standard file "ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run" from the ATI web site it appears to work but then I discover it actually got an error.I saw a reference to ATI requiring 32-bit libraries to install their 64-bit driver. Is there a link or post that explains how to add the 32-bit libraries. Will that solve the problem, or will I just waste more time trying that?

Does anyone know if I need to build the proprietary ATI drivers specifically for 32-bit, or do the 64-bit packages take care of 32-bit compatibility? If so, how would I do that?
I tried:
Code:
But the package has the same files as its 64-bit counterpart. The reason I'm asking is I'm trying to get Neverwinter Nights working and a post I found mentioned this problem.
I get a single line error: "Failed to initialize graphics."

How might I disable VDPAU? I use an open source module to control my backlight so whenever an application uses VDPAU it resets my backlight to maximum. Is there anyway to disable it or access to it?. If so are there any major consequences to disabling it?

I have installed the Packman Mplayer and smplayer packages. I have also installed the proprietary nvidia drivers from the main site. However when I try using vdpau in mplayer, the video doesn't show up and the logs show these messages:

I am trying to take advantage of VDPAU for playing video files with my ASRock ION 330. As far as I know, MPlayer and VLC both include VDPAU support. Ok then, I managed to make MPlayer work from the command line:
mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau ./filename.mkv
In this way it plays a 720p content smoothly, with under 10% CPU use. Great! The problem is when I try to make this permanent, i.e., configuring the files ~/.mplayer/config and ~/.mplayer/gui.conf.This is what I have in there:
config
======
vo=vdpau,xv,
vc=ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau,
[code]....
But still, when I open MPlayer from the menu, no matter what file I try to open it gives this ugly message:Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. With regard to VLC, I had no luck, although I am using the latest "1.0.3 Goldeneye" version, I don't know how to make use of VDPAU.

Is there a way VLC to use vdpau as video output? Mplayer and Gnomemplayer can use it and the video playback uses as little as 2-4 % CPU power even on 1080p movies. Xorg and Kwin continue to use pretty much CPU power in video playback process , I suppose there is no way to limit them or there is ?

I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. After the upgrade, mplayer no longer play a DVD.
I put the missing codecs, as described here: [url] Now DVD worked.
Also during the upgrade package libvdpau1 was disappeared, I restored it from the default repository. Then vdpau worked, but only after a reboot. After restarting gdm (select "Log Out" or sudo service gdm stop/start, or Ctrl + Alt + Backspace) an error:
After reboot everything works again.I updated libvdpau1 from repository [url], but it did not help, same error.
Video: nvidia 9600M GT
Notebook [url]
Driver set the default, 195.36.15-0ubuntu3, from the standard repositories.
In Karmic was 185, everything worked.
I noticed this feature, I do not know whether it is connected with subj:
Immediately after loading the gdm starts with the seventh console, ie when you exit the virtual console by Ctrl + Alt + F2 again to hit Ctrl + Alt + F7.
After you restart gdm is in the eighth console, Ctrl + Alt + F8.
If I run a guest session, it starts with the ninth console.
In the karmic like always with the seventh started.
When booting too strange things happen.
Ubuntu Karmic I installed with Alternate CD to an encrypted LVM.
I booting in text mode, ie without "quiet splash".
Booting reached requiring a password, when entering the password does not display an asterisk, after entering the password then continue normally.
After upgrading to Lucid booting lines are shown as a twisted, ladder when entering the password it displays asterisks and when I enter each character again displays prompt.
I did not like, and I again put the "quiet splash".

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and have it hooked up to my HDTV. My GPU is an 8600 GT and I am using the current nvidia driver. Mother board is GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H, CPU is AMD 4850e, using 2x1G ram 800MHz. Everything I have installed on it comes straight through Synaptic. Smplayer seems to work fine with the VDPAU selected (cpu usage is nice and low during HD playback), but there is a slight problem that really annoys. Every 2-3 seconds the picture seems to have the hiccups, its as though it gets stuck on one frame for a split second and then jumps to the next.

I recently upgraded to Maverick. I did a clean install on my system. I am running NVIDIA drivers from the X-Swat repo. Whenever I try to play a mkv file using Gnome Mplayer it is very jumpy and laggy. VLC, using it's new hardware acceleration, won't even display video, though it does output the audio. I experienced none of these problems with my 10.04 setup. I am unsure if it is a player bug, a driver bug or something with the VDPAU library itself.

I am using mplayer with vdpau enabled in Ubuntu 10.10. It works very well in general, reducing cpu usage for hd from 50% to 60% to around 10 -15% or less. There is however one slightly annoying problem. It is that mplayer would appear to "forget" its vdpau output setting once in a while and especially after rebooting. When that happens it needs to be "reset" in order to use vdpau. "Resetting" basically just means opening gnome-mplayer and change video output to xv and then back to vdpau again.
I should clarify that the setting has not actually been lost, it still says "vdpau", it just need resetting).

I can successfully play h264 and vc1 encoded HD videos with vdpau acceleration using Gnome MPlayer or SMplayer, but in order to accomplish this, I have to provide -vc ffh264vdpau/ffvc1vdpau as an extra argument for MPlayer. Now this totally sucks as I have to manually type this in for HD videos and remove for all others every single time... What's worse is that I have to know what the video is in advance so I first need to analyze it before playing. So, I figured that if there's a way to tell MPlayer to aways use ffh264vdpau codec for h264 and ffvc1vdpau for vc1 videos, I'd be free to just click and watch.

Im confused about buying nVidia 9800 GT or ATI HD 4770, In the 1st place I am going to buy this card to play HD videos 720p & 1080i and in the 2nd place to play games.I was using nVidia 6200 LE which doesnt support VDPAU, So nVidia use VDPAU in the newer cards to play movies, my question is:* Does ATI have something like VDPAU that have the same video playback performance ?

I recently updated my Squeeze installation to testing and since then I've been unable to use VDPAU with SMPlayer and MPLayer. When VDPAU is enabled every video file gives the same error (see log at the end; don't mind the extra channel entries, they're for converting AAC to AC3 on-the-fly). Before this everything worked as it should.

If you want to use XBMC 9.11 (Camelot) and MPlayer, I suggest to use RPM Fusion. VDPAU support is now mainline...My repository provides pre-beta XBMC Dharma packages (xbmc-dharma) and recent mplayer packages with bluray support (through libbluray and libaacs). These packages depend on RPM Fusion.
xbmc-dharma is also compiled with vdpau and vaapi support. vaapi is supposed to be compatible with Nvidia (through vdpau, install vdpau-video), ATI (through xvba, install xvba-video) and Intel (directly). For me (NVidia), it doesn't work, xbmc instantly crash. Anyway, you can try. Maybe it's useful for someone. You can maybe find informations here: [URL] For NVidia and ATI, it can only work with the closed source driver. For Intel. libva, vdpau-video source packages were copied from [URL](I forgot) and recompiled by me.
One last thing, RTMP [URL] support was removed from XBMC after 9.11. If you want to watch videos over this protocol (usually flash), you have to install librtmp (provided in my repo). Repository URL:[URL] If you want to install it in yum, copy [URL]

mplayer complains about not being able to find libvdpau_nvidia.so. I checked in /usr/lib, and it's there, but it's a link that points to /usr/lib/vdpau libvdpau_nvidia.so. The folder vdpau doesn't exist.
Which package do I need to install to get this to work?

2) Does LUCID mplayer have VDPAU support "..."?
3) If Lucid doesn't, can I use the Karmic VDPAU PPA for Lucid, or much I compile mplayer myself?
4) Point me to a place with instructions on compiling mplayer with VDPAU support. If you don't know, I'll just google it.

I have tried many ways to enable vdpau support in my machine but for no avail. A member here helped me very much but I couldn't manage to succeed. My system has Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, Nvidia 8500GT 512mb, Intel Core 2 duo. I have installed Nvidia driver version 195 currently available from their site. I tried compiling mplayer with vdpau support from various tutorials thread here around in Ubuntu forums.
Is there anyone in this forum with Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit with the same other system requirements as mine who have successfully managed to make the VDPAU work?
