Slackware :: Realtek RTL8185 -- Rtl8180 Module Locking System Up On Slack 13?
Jan 22, 2010
an old Compaq Presario 8000, which I reluctantly took, as I tend to end up with more computers than I use and more or less end up acting as a disposal agent. It's a 2.4Ghz machine, which will suffice for whatever I felt like installing on it.I have a generic wifi pci card with a Realtek RTL8185 chipset in it, which I never used and thought I'd set up that computer with it. Hadn't installed Slackware 13 on anything, and it's a distro I like so I went at it.Install went well, no problems there, but I've used Slackware for about 9 years so I'm readily familiar with that end o' things.
I found the rtl8180 module to be causing problems. It would load on boot, but wouldn't bring up a wireless interface. I was able to remove the module with 'rmmod rtl8180' well enough, but when I would load it again with 'modprobe rtl8180', the system would lock. Tried that a few times, same result. I ran across mention of a driver on Realtek's web site, so I downloaded and installed it. That one is identified as 'r8180'. I added 'rtl8180' to the module blacklist to prevent it from being loaded at boot, and proceeded to set up wpa_supplicant.conf for my WPA-PSK connection. Came up without a hitch. The connection is stable thus far, with a respectable link quality. The Realtek driver can be found here.I thought I might document my solution here in case someone else runs across the same issue that I experienced.I'm thinking of slapping another wireless NIC in that computer, or perhaps testing with multihoming possibly. This computer will probably end up as an AP for relaying my wireless traffic to an AP downstairs. I have one USB NIC (Alfa AWUS036S)with a 5dB antenna that has a strong signal, but the ones of more a common variety could use a little help

Actually, I have posted this problem here but I dont know if is best to ask it here. The problem is that I have upgraded my OS to Slackware 13.1 64 bits, and now, I cant compile the module RT73 from serialmonkey
There are a lot of similar tutorials explaining the steps for a succesfully installation. I had followed any of them before, and I had no problem never.
But now, I get this error:
Code:
make[1]:Entering directory "/usr/src/linux-2.6.33.4"
Building modules, stage 2
MODPOST 0 modules
make [1]: Leaving directory "/usr/src/linux-2.6.33.4"
rt73.ko failed to build!
make:*** [module] Error 1
On the other hand, in the serialmonkey page they said that the driver was included into the kernel yet, but I dont know how can I now if I have the driver installed. The true is that my usb doesnt work.
Its is a USB D-Link System AirPlus G DWL-G122 Wireless Adapter (rec.C1) [Ralink RT73]

I just checked the Realtek website and they have a new Linux Driver for the RTL8185. The new driver is dated 6/26/2009. So it is quite recent. I would have thought it might have gotten into FC11.
I have 2 questions. Has anyone tried it? What would be the steps to install it?

when I updated from 10.04 to 10.10 beta, I lost my wireless on my Gateway MX3410 laptop. In 10.04, the wireless Realtek RTL8185 card was auto-detected, worked with the default driver.
So I installed the linux driver version of Realtek RTL8185. Although the driver shows up in the "Additional Drivers" panel under "Administration", the computer is not recognising the driver.
Below is all the specs of the current situation.
Gateway MX3410 Computer
OS: Ubuntu maverick (development branch)

Running Linux mint 10 After the installation the wireless connection worked but it was very weak and intermittent. The icon would show 1 bar or none. iwconfig showed the rate at 1Mb/s. The same card worked fine in windows and on a 32bit version of linux. Installed new driver from realtek. Now the iwconfig readings look good and the icons shows 2 and sometimes 3 bars. But it will not connect at all! I even turned off all security on my router but it would not connect.

At first I thought it was the daily cron jobs, but it's been at it for like 3 or 4 hours. It's driving me crazy locking up my system. I suppose I should get off the computer anyway, no real reason to be on for so long.
The only things that look weird in system monitor is kwin, virtuoso-t and X seems to be higher CPU usage than it should. And CPU usage is 20-50% when I'm not doing anything. It was indexing my files.

I am trying to get PHP 5.3.4 into my webserver, running Slack 13.1 on a 32bit system. Basically, it's a success, but no matter what options I try, phar will not be installed
Code:
Generating phar.php
Generating phar.phar
PEAR package PHP_Archive not installed: generated phar will require PHP's phar extension be enabled.

my Conky needed the Coretemp, and a friend of LQ told me to run modprobe, and it works greate! no every time I start my system, I need to run the modprobe to add the module to Kernel. How can I put the coretemp to start every startup? (I think there is somenthing to do with a file on the rc.module at /etc/rc.d/, but I'm afraid to do something stupid...) I want to make the conky running after start of the system. How can I do this?

I am running openSUSE 11.1 with modified Kernel. While trying to run make on the downloaded driver for the RTL2831 I am getting an error message that I do not full understand. That is:
Code:
linux-2c5j:~/rtl2831-r2 # make
make -C /root/rtl2831-r2/v4l
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/rtl2831-r2/v4l'
No version yet, using 3.0.4-41-desktop
[code]...
I am not sure what is required when the error is "first use this function". How can I use the function T_DIGITAL_TV if I first have to install my driver in order to use the stick?

The setup is a central PC with XDMCP getting connections from two peripheral PCs. All PCs have normal Slackware installations (12.0 the central one, 13.1 the others). XDMCP works fine and the users login to KDE. The users have a common directory with appropriate permissions for group work. The problem is file locking. More than one users can open and work on the same file in the common directory, eg. foto editing the same jpg with GIMP.
Googling around I found that file locking is advisory in Linux, meaning its up to the applications to honour it. Also that there is a mand (mandatory locking) mount option which seems like the solution, but there are warnings [1], [2]. Other finds point to the use of versioning systems (svn, git) to take care of file locking, or network file systems (cifs, nfs): I'd prefer not to burden casual users with having to come to terms with a versioning system, and the network file systems seem wrong since the users work locally.
Considering Linux is a multiuser OS I am taken aback from this apparent lack of file locking support and tend to think missing something obvious.Has anyoneexperienced/solved a similar setup?A couple of last points. The common directory is on a normal mount (ext3, RAID1), fstab entry:
Code:
/dev/md0 /data ext3 defaults 1 2
And I'm aware of options like TSLP, but I'd rather resolve the issue generically.

When I try to put slackware to sleep or have it hibernate the system simply sits with a black screen. Normally it would do this for a short period of time immediately before the actual sleep state (screen powered off, croissant light on) is entered, but currently it does it indefinitely. My sleep USED to work just fine, it broke after some unclean shutdown or another, basically I just want to know what I can try resetting to try to get it back to normal.
Slackware64 13.1, running on thinkpad X61.
EDIT: Of course the second I make the post I think of trying to sleep/hibernate from the command line instead of through X/GDM (Gnome SlackBuild). That works.

I have some doubts about the official Pat's upgrading procedure. In the UPGRADE.TXT file, one of the stepts says:
Code:
upgradepkg --install-new *.t?z What does --install-new mean? Pkgs I have no installed on my 13.1 will be installed on the 13.37 upgrade? For example, I did not installed KDE on 13.1. Will be installed when upgrade? - What about third party pkgs? Slacky, SlackBuilds.org, compiled by myself. Should I remove them before upgrading slack?

I first started experiencing it when I would leave my computer logged in overnight.I would come in and find the screen frozen and flickering. When I ssh'd into the machine, I could see that Xorg was using 100% of the CPU and a ton of memory. I could kill kdm, but not Xorg. Only a full reboot would cure it.When it would reboot, my second monitor sometimes would not work and it would take several reboots to get it up and running. Recently, I was working in matlab and had Xorg freeze on my numerous times...always when I had my second monitor up and running.
The card in question is an Nvidia 9800 GX 2.It almost seems like GPU0 (the one running the second monitor) is dead or dieing and is causing instability when it is up and running..but I've also heard that X running away and locking up the system is a known bug.

Has anyone here succeeded in getting armed slack running on a consumer kirkwood device .ie. one without serial console? I have a tonido plug that I want to liberate. By default the plug boots first from the external usb, so I would only need to set up / on the first partition. I would be very interested to know if someone had managed to install slack to the internal nand without bricking it.

my problem, I have Slackware 13 dual booted with vista on a dell 1545 2 ghz 2gig ram. to these forums I have gotten everything working except my creative zen vision M 30g. I have tried alll the suggestions posted here and other places on the net. Here is my output from lsusb.

Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

any way i can transfer files back and forth to this would be great since it does not work in vista either. and I am pretty sure 99.9% that I have all the libmtp, libnjb, and whatever other libs are needed installed but in gnomad it says no devices found on USB hub. I hope this is enough info and someone out there has the trick or maybe I am missing something obvious.

I installed slackware on my laptop last night, :-) very happy. Can't wait to learn more about linux and even computers in general. I've already learnt heaps since entering the alternative operating system world. Anyways, i've got xfce up and running with slack now, created a new user 4 my self. And now i'd like to get some updates and stuff, but i need to use my mobile broadband. It's a telsta dongle If that changes the circumstances. How would i go about setting this up?

I am trying to setup a PXE booting environment in my network and I almost got it to work... Only it does not quite work yet... Basically, I want my laptop or any other machines to boot from my network. I followed the instructions from AlienBob to do so. I setup my laptop to boot from the NIC, it automatically gets an IP from the DHCP server (pfSense);
I setup my gateway/DHCP server (pfSense) as is: -The IP address from the network boot server: 192.168.0.101 (the server where my slackware mirror and all tftp boot files are) -The filename used for network booting: /mnt/it-maintenance/tftpboot/slackware-13.1/pxelinux.0 (the absolute address of pxelinux.0 in my server)
I setup the network boot server (running slack 13.1) as is: -uncommented the line in inetd.conf to have:
Code:
tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/in.tftpd in.tftpd -s /tftpboot -r blksize
-added a NFS share to /etc/exports to have:
Code:
/mnt/it-maintenance/operating-systems/slackware-13.1
192.168.0.106(ro,sync,insecure,all_squash)
