Slackware :: Current Can't Log Into KDE 4.5.4 With Desktop Effects Enabled

Dec 21, 2010

I updated to latest -current last night and since then have not been able to login to my KDE desktop. After typing in the password, I get the starter icons come up, and just as the last one comes up, the desktop logs out to the login screen again. I worked out that it was because desktop effects were enabled - disabling these in kwinrc allows me to login, although without desktop effects.Using NVidia 256.53 binary drivers b.t.w.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Effects Could Not Be Enabled

Apr 30, 2010

I've just completed a successful clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (32 bit).Out of the box, Desktop effects worked flawlessly. However, after installing the Ati driver from the Hardware Drivers utility, when I try to enable Normal desktop effects (Instead of None) I get a message saying "Desktop Effects Could Not Be Enabled". The Hardware Drivers utility says "Driver is installed and currently in use"

Installing and running glxgears from a terminal gives the error: "Segmentation Fault".The hardware in question is an Ati Radeon 4xxx series (I think it's a 4800 but can't remember exactly)

Fedora :: 13 Graphics - Screen Became Unusable When Enabled Desktop Effects

May 30, 2010

I attempted to install the mesa-dri-drivers-experimental package and my screen became unusable when I enabled desktop effects. I then uninstalled mesa-dri-drivers-experimental and tried to install the akmod before realizing that my card isn't supported yet. Now I can't seem to do anyting to get my screen back. I removed the blacklist on nouveau, but my screen still goes black after fedora boots. Is there any way I can just get things back to default without reinstalling the whole system?

Ubuntu :: Compiz=Enabled,Desktop Effects Not Working Properly?

Jan 19, 2011

Im a new member here.So please don't get mad at me.If i posted on a wrong section(Am I in the right section?) By the way,Here is my problem. My graphic card is Intel 82852/82855.And it passes the Ubuntu Desktop Effects requirement. I am aware of enabling the graphic card in Ubuntu 10.10, Since enabling the drivers was successful. I enabled the desktop effects. After i switched to Normal(Graphic Mode)the screen went blank. Then after i clicked ALT+TAB. there is an option to keep this option or not.I clicked Keep this settings. Then i proceeded in Web browsing(because i'm a web addict). Then i click CTRL+ALT+LEFT/RIGHT For the workspaces to switch. Then i found this 4 square transparent with black margin boxes.Which has a weird distorting effect. That effect is going crazy. Then i rebooted(Hoping to fix the problem). Then it is still there.

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 - Desktop Effects Not Supported On Current Hardware

Oct 14, 2010

I have a Nvidia GEforce 8400 GS card, and the drivers from the Nvidia repository. When I try to enable Desktop Effects, I'm told that "Desktop effects are not supported on your current hardware / configuration." Clicking no, something starts using up 90-100% CPU, I can't tell what the rogue process is, top only shows the gconf daemon using 10-11% CPU. I have to log off to end it. What's up with the card not being supported? I can't find a list, but I'm sure this is new enough to be included. Is there a way other than top to trace the rogue application? I've never seen anything like this before, top has always been reliable. I have Gnome 2.30 on openSUSE 11.3.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Lenovo T400 - Intel Video Card And Compiz - Desktop Effects Cannot Be Enabled

Apr 4, 2010

I'm running Karmic Koala 64 bit on my Lenovo T400 laptop with switchable graphics having both Intel and ATI video cards. I've set my bios to use the intel card only and turned the automatic switching off. So far so good, but I'd like to turn on compiz for basic window animations. When I try to start compiz by selecting

Code:

"Appearance Preferences" -> "Visual Effects" -> "Normal"

I get an error message saying "Desktop effects cannot be enabled"

Code:

"System" -> "Administration" -> "Hardware Drivers"

doesn't show any new drivers that could be installed. This was working out of the box when I first installed Karmic Koala a few month ago, but things got messed up when I installed the restricted drivers for my ATI card. Now I can enable compiz if I switch to ATI from my bios settings and install the drivers but I don't want to use it due to high power consumption and I've removed the ATI drivers.

Here is my xorg.conf file:

Code:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Ubuntu :: NVidia Driver "Desktop Visual Effects Cannot Be Enabled"

Jun 26, 2011

I have new hardware and I'm doing a dual boot, hoping that Ubuntu will be my primary OS, but I'm having trouble ringing it out. I installed Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 and in the past with an old machine I could turn on visual effects. With this machine, when I try to, it says it's looking for a driver, blinks a bit and then comes back with a message saying "Desktop visual effects cannot be enabled."

I assume that I don't have the nVidia driver loaded. When I go to Hardware Drivers, it says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system." In synaptic, the latest driver does not show up. I followed the instructions on this site that someone put up which required adding some lines to the "Blacklist" then purging old drivers. It said to expect an error and what to do then, but I never got the error. When I tried to do the rest of the commands anyway, nothing seemed to happen. One of the steps was to download the latest driver, which I did. It was a .run file...........

1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.

okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.

i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.

Ubuntu :: "Desktop Effects Could Not Be Enabled" After Upgrade To 10.10

The desktop visual effect cannot be activated after I upgraded my Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. No matter "Normal", "Extra" or "Custom" option I selected in Visual Effects tab of the Appearance Preferences dialog box, the "can not be enabled" warning shows up. But I can enabled the Extra desktop visual effect under Ubuntu 10.04. My video card is nVidia m105, and my laptop is Thinkpad SL400. I tried to add my user account to the "gdm", "video" etc, but I got the same error message.

General :: Error: "Desktop Effects Could Not Be Enabled"

May 1, 2010

I can't enable visual effects. I've been scouring Google for things to try for way too long at this point. I think I've tried it all. I'm using ubuntu 9.10. I've got an nvidia card. Interestingly, I've had the visual effects working on this computer on two different occasions. Once a couple years ago, then I reformatted and had them working again. Then when I shut my computer off a few months ago, all of my X settings got erased, and from that point on, I was never able to get visual effects enabled again.

When I try to enable visual effects I get the error: "Desktop effects could not be enabled" I'm running the nvidia 185 driver, although I've tried the 173 driver with the same results. If I try doing compiz from the command line, I get this:

[Code]...

BTW, the message that says you can't post links in your messages until you have 15 posts is extremely misleading (and made me very frustrated). I had a few (at) symbols in my post and didn't realize that was the problem, because I was looking for some kind of URL, since that's what the error message said was the problem. I was about to give up hope on even posting this message! Oh well, I figured it out.

Slackware :: Desktop Effects Are Not Available On System?

Jul 1, 2011

I installed Slackware 13.37 on a new hard drive today. After booting in to KDE everything seemed to be working as normal. I hadn't yet installed my video drivers but I still have the limited eye candy afforded by default. After that I switched to XFCE and transferred some data over (for some reason Dolphin hates certain folders of mine) and when I logged back in all the desktop effects were inactive. When I selected desktop effects from the menu I saw the message "Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:" No issues are listed, and I can select nothing, even after installing proprietary ATI drivers. I created a new account and everything works perfectly in it.
