Slackware :: ATI R600: Videos Not Fast Enough
Feb 12, 2011
1. 32 bit Athlon w/1G & HD4650 AGP w/kernel 2.6.35.4 & some agp patch
2. Twin core turion 64 bit with rs690 & PCIE w/kernel 2.6.334 on slack64-13.1.
Each is using xf86-video-ati-6.13.0 & mesa-7.8.1, pixman-0.16.6, libdrm-2.4.20, & xorg-server-1.7.7, and libflashplayer 10.2 d151 or thereabouts. Neither will play a video properly on full screen - the mouths are badly out of sync with the speech, although otherwise we're ok. The athlon did play fine when it had some old nvidia card Should I go at newer oss stuff (sigh) and compile another round of packages, or should I go to proprietary drivers?

First answer this: Do you have a video card with an HDMI port on it? If you aren't sure you can look for this: (FWI its close to the same size as a VGA port) If you answered yes, follow these steps and hopefully it will solve the ..... Flash issue. (Fedora 14 KDE instructions)
Kicker Menu > Computer > System Settings > Multimedia
Select "Phonon" on the left. With Phonon selected, click on "Audio Output" at the top and notice the right box fills with all your audio devices listed in order of which device is default starting from the top. Notice the "(HDMI)" next to one of them lol? Simply click the HDMI device and then click "Defer" a few times. This should solve your Flash problems permanently. he reason why this happens is HDMI is both video AND audio. If both are being processed through a video card, theres nothing slowing it down for normal playback.

did a fresh install of 11.3, running default firefox 3.6.6 with the adobe flash plugin, standard kernel mode setting (kms) video and am getting audio and video play back too fast in sites such as videos. tried setting edit, preferences, applications, flash to "use flash player (default)", does nothing. tried using the nvidia driver, tried updating firefox to 3.6.8, no avail - same thing play back audio and video too fast.

I had a memory stick problem over the weekend, and after correcting the problem, I decided to up grade from Linux Mint 9 to Linux Mint 10.
All video and sound functions worked properly prior to changing to Linux Mint 10. Now I can not get any sound out of the speakers, from a CD or a digital file, and a video goes at super fast speed with no sound. I am new the Linux world but learning fast. Data CD's work correctly both in reading and burning new.

It can be summed up by saying the internet works fine some moments then becomes so laggy a few minutes later it is completely unusable. This is what has happened so far. First I went to scottrade trading platform, it takes real-time quotes of stocks and graphs them, allows you to see account information. It was working amazing for about 20 seconds, then out of nowhere the internet just stops working on it completely and wont come back. Then I tried WCIII. The patch would not download at all. I couldn't even manually get it. Then 3 minutes later I try it again and it starts making progress.
Ubuntu update files are downloading the slowest I have ever seen before. I went to ....., the videos download really fast for a few seconds then they just stop. No progress at all for at least a minute or so and then they crawl back to making progress. Web pages I visit work fine one moment, I go back to the exact same page a minute later and it doesnt work at all, takes a few minutes just to load.

Since I can't get a screen size anywhere above 1280x800 on the "radeon" driver and the experimental mesa dri drivers - which I installed (7.8.1.6) have now disabled 3D on all ATI drivers(!) I'm scratching my head furiously trying to see if I can get 3D to work. I've taken a look at the X.Org experimental HOWTO but it says if I have everything I need I don't need to follow the steps and download from git. [URL]. If you have reasonably up to date radeonhd (1.3.0 or higher), kernel (2.6.32 or higher) and mesa (7.7 or higher)you shouldn't need to follow *any* of the instructions on this page. These obviously come with F13 by default.
Glxinfo output is right here, I'll post xorg.conf if anyone needs it:

I had Ubuntu 10.04 installed with great compositing performance on my Radeon HD 3450 card, and I installed Ubuntu 11.04 last night. I can't get into anything but Ubuntu Classic (No Effects) to actually use the computer. Whenever I log into Ubuntu Classic (w/ Effects), I can hear the start sound, the panels and some shadows show up, but immediately after they first render, I can't touch anything, shadows disappear wherever I click, and it freezes, forcing me to drop to a tty and kill X.
Whenever I try to start Unity, I hear the start sound, but never see anything but the wallpaper. Also, the screen will sometimes go black for a second or so before returning to the same frozen graphics available previously, and sometimes I can't even drop to a tty after it does this. From glxinfo, everything seems to be in order. Here is the relevant data.
Quote:
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV620
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10.2
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
So far as I know, Unity should support OpenGL 1.5+ capable drivers/cards, and compiz should support even lower requirements. As I said, on the LTS release the drivers performed admirably well, far better than fglrx on the same card- much more fluid, no jerkiness. I can get Unity working with fglrx, but it's quite depressing to watch, and I don't plan on using it when I have an open card that should work well. I am aware that there were recent changes to the kernel to bring in the Gallium driver for R600 cards- I've read something about r600g and r600c and one of them being used in Ubuntu. I'm supposing the recent change is what's causing these issues, and I'm curious about how to change them back or correct whatever is causing these problems.

Everything worked fine until yesterday, but now when I open Firefox and I try to load a video, I simply get the black video. It's like it is loading but nothing appear and nothing happens! The page is loaded but the video is not shown
I changed anything, I tried to "reinstall" the .so flash plugin... but no luck :S
I also tried to start firefox from command line to see if there's something wrong but nothing...
It's like the loading time for the flash video is infinite.

Trying to watch on-line videos in FluxBox - most will play some will not. I can't find any common thread re what does or doesn't play. Situation is the same no matter what browser I use (generally Swiftfox). If I switch to XFCE, there are no issues. Using standard install of 13.1 and have no other issues. Have no idea where to look or what to look for.

Installing 11.2 from KDE LiveCD on an IBM ThinkCenter with 3.2Gb CPU and 1Gb RAM. Ubuntu 9.04 on first two partitions. I go through the configuration, click to 'install': Install display bars remain blank. After 2-3 minutes, black screen with scroll of attempted installation pieces and the error message: "Respawning too fast. Disabled for 5 min." Freeze.
Other posts mention problem with init. But this is happening with the install so not able to address that. No apparent md5chksum for LiveCDs. No mention of this problem in installation help guide. Does anyone know how to deal with this? If you need more info, I will provide. Though it seems this is not an unusual problem when booting an installed system, there's no mention of it happening during installation.

I have a Asus EEE 1000h with ubuntu 9.10 remix. A problem on first asus eee's is the keyboard: also just typed a letter once, the laptop writes it double (every 200 letters more or less). For example it looks like this while writing: "thiss is a ttest" For Windows XP I found a way to fix it: i increased the time, that limits writing letters twice by fast typing. Its not the time "Repeat Keys" Delay (Keyboard Settings "Key presses repeat when key is held down")! In fakt its the opposite: It limits pressing the key to fast. (I hope you understand the problem *g)

My install of 10.10 went fine with the exception of Audio. If I attempt to use audio with the Rythmbox application or through Adobe Flash (in firefox), it sounds like an old fashioned 33 1/3 rpm phonograph record playing at 45 rpms. This problem has been around for a while and I had hoped that it would be cleaned up by now.
I'm running an AMD 64 processor (in 32 bit mode) and my audio card is a "Sound Blaster Live Value" (EMU10k1X). My on-board sound card is turned off in the bios. It works beautifully under Ubuntu 10.04 and FC13 with Pulse Audio.
Originally I thought that it might be a problem with Rythmbox which is now at v 0.13.1, a later version then I have been using in 10.04. However, with the Rhythmbox application off, I still get the same effect when trying to use audio in firefox. I also noticed that my cpu utilization climbs to about 80% when Rhythmbox is on.

And its not a problem with the new flash release because last year when I had ubuntu 10.04 it did the same thing (im on 10.10)

In the old days of M$-DOS, there was the NCD (Norton Change Directory) utility. Anything of the sort in Linux?Explanatory note: you typed out the name of the directory you wanted to go to, that is, last element of the dir path. And you were, ipso facto, in that dir. If that was the only one by that name, good. When not, and if that wasn't the intended dir, you typed the same command again and you were in a second dir of that name. If this was the intended dir, good. And so on. It simply maintained a data base with the whole tree, and updated it when invoked from a newly created dir o by means of an option, NCD/R.

I am looking for ways and tricks to speed up the time dd takes to backup a whole partition and/or a whole hdd to a file.I recently used Acronis TrueImage on a Windows box at work to clone a 230GB hdd onto another..the process took around 5 minutes, if.Now, I've done hdd backups into a file or other hdds via dd before, however compared to that, they've been horrendously slow. What are the best settings for getting a -fast- backup/ restore via dd of, say, an ext3 filesystem?

I have a fast server running Debian 5 (I tried to upgrade and everything broke.
So I'll stay with Lenny):
Core 2 Duo
4Gb RAM
RAID 0
100mbit
When I use the -X command and try and run applications to my desktop, it is VERY slow. Firefox takes 20 seconds+ just for a right-click menu to appear. It is completely unusable because of this speed. And this is after a clean install of Debian 5.
I've tried on multiple clients (Windows and OS X) and it is always slow! Even though both computers and connections are fast. My home connection is 100mbit too....
So the problem is not bandwidth or resources, the problem must be with the server/software? Any ideas why tunneling X11 applications are so slow? Is there an alternative X11 software I could use on the server?
1 thread in FTP to this server gives 10MB/s (100mbit). So X11 should be fast? And btw, I'm tunneling through SSH.
Can figure out why it is so slow?
