Server :: Omit A Couple Of Update Packages?

Jan 26, 2011

I have a server running Ubuntu 10.04 server - no gui. In the list of updates today I see plymouth and plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text. Plymouth is a gui application (and not a very good one from what I recall from 10.04 alpha and beta testing days). So I don't understand why I would need it on a box with no gui.

If I use Webmin 1.530 to attempt the updates I unselect the two plymouth packages and then click Update Selected Packages. The list on the Update Packages confirmation page shows the two plymouth packages. I can unselect other packages and they do not appear on the confirmation page.

If I use apt-get upgrade I am again presented with a list containing the plymouth packages. Nothing in the apt-get man page jumps out at me as a way around all or nothing. I guess I could manually install the other 8 updates and not do the plymouth ones. I fear that they will keep appearing on the updates list each time.

Debian :: Omit Standard System Packages?

Mar 1, 2011

During the installer specifically in 'tasksel', I'm given a few options. I generally de-select every possible option but what exactly is under the package group name 'Standard System'?ScreenshotObviously when I de-select 'Standard System', basically my installation of 'netinst' is almost immediately completed and I'm asked to reboot. How can I see or find out what exactly am I omitting from the system?

Ubuntu :: Screen Popped Up A Couple Windows Reporting Error "Could Not Update ICEAuthority File" While Booting Up

May 4, 2010

note: acct and acct2 are not the actual account names. I spent a long time figuring out this ubuntu problem on my own and decided to share it with the ubuntu users out there. I will give a summary of what had happened and what I had done to resolve it. I did a lot of complicated account password changing as well. I wanted to get rid of the login keyring thing.

I had tried messing around with some of ubuntu's settings when I first installed 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I changed settings in: System>>Administration>>Users and Groups, and System>>Administration>>Login Screen. I got terrible results, but ended up solving it on my own. The first account I had was named "acct". I had an issue with the keyring always needing to be unlocked, meaning I had to type in a password twice. I did not like this. So I decided, why not delete this "acct" account and make a new one that I can use?

I made a second user account called "acct2". I messed around a lot with the settings, just to see what would happen and what would work. I tried to cut out some of the files that were in the other account, the account "acct", while I was in user account "acct2". I could not because I did not have the rights to do it.

I realized I had to change those files to shared. I logged back into the other account "acct", which was an administrator account. I made them all shared files. Next, I went back into acct2, then cut all the files out of acct that I needed, then I deleted the home folder for acct. This is probably where the problems all started. I always start with the purple screen and have no choice to log into my usable acct2 account and have to wait 7 minutes to get that option to do so. When I rebooted, the screen popped up a couple windows reporting errors to me:

Programming :: Python - String To Omit The Single Quotes (')?

Mar 18, 2011

After I assign a string to a variable, I know that the print function will remove the single quotes around the value, but is there a way to assign a variable without the quotes around the value? for example:

a = open('/usr/lib', 'r+')
b = f.read()
c = x.replace('.xx','yy')
d = ?

c returns the value with quotes around it print c returns the value without the quotes Is there a way to assign a new variable (d) which will equal c without the quotes? I need a new variable which has the quotes omitted because from there the script will take the value of the last variable (which is a path to a file), and tar up that file. It won't recognize the path to the file if the value has quotes around it.

Server :: Process Of Setting Up A Couple Of Virtual Servers In A Cloud Environment?

Mar 17, 2011

I am in the process of setting up a couple of virtual servers in a cloud environment. I am currently working on my application server (Server 1) and am stuck on the creation of my ruleset for this server.

I need to allow SSH, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, and PING on this server. This server will also need to be able to talk with a couple of database servers as well as a memcache server (all internally within my cloud environment)

I have been reading on iptables, since I have never messed with them before, and have come up with the ruleset I will paste below. I have taken other steps to secure my server...changing ssh port, not allowing root to login via ssh without logging in as a user, turning off unnecessary daemons, editing my hosts allow/deny files, just to name a few.

I am a newbie to iptables, so I would love a bit of helpful advice, criticism, and even a good explanation why I should add or remove or edit something. I really want to know the how AND the why!

Server :: Running "yum Check-update" On A List Rather Than Installed Packages

Nov 24, 2010

I've been google'ing around recently for some good solutions for creating local yum "update" repositories without syncing entire repositories. (or adding hundreds of exclude statements in config files)

I have several boxes with a common base build (centos 5.5/x86_64), one has nagios3, another has apache, and another tomcat6 (also a couple of others) For tomcat and nagios I'm obviously using 3rd party repositories (jpackage, epel, rpmforge to name a few) Everything is installed via RPM from kickstart.

I would like to make an updates repository which contains the updates for everything that's installed (including centos base).

Updates will be downloaded on a separate box, but not sure how to get the list of packages required on that box where the packages are not actually installed. I've looked at reposync and mrepo, but appear to be syncing from what's available rather than what's required.

I was hoping that I can provide an "rpm -qa" output, compare this to a "yum list" or perhaps running "yum check-update" on a list rather than installed packages. I could then use the yum-downloadonly module to get the packages which have changed from available sources.

Ubuntu Servers :: Every Time Logged In Via SSH Got A Message Telling There Where Packages To Update Including A Security Update?

Feb 11, 2011

I was running 10.04 LTS and had decided to stick to the LTS versions as I'm now running my machine as a server and don't want to be updating regularly.Every time I logged in via SSH I got a message telling me there where packages to update including a security update. So I did a search to find out how to perform an update on Ubuntu server from the command line.What I found was to do this:sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get dist-upgradeAfter doing that I rebooted but now my machine gives me this message:

init: ureadahead-other main process (794) terminated with status 4Your disk drives are being checked for errors, this may take some timePress C to cancel all checks currently inprogressI'm not pressing C yet and leaving it alone to finish, but I noticed when the machine booted that one of the options for booting talked about Ubuntu 10.10, so I'm worried that I've updated from 10.04 LTS to 10.10 by accident?

Ubuntu :: How To NOT Keep Update Deb Packages?

Mar 9, 2011

When I allow Update Manager to download and install security and other updates it saves the deb package files in /var/cache/apt/archives. I don't really need or want to keep these files. I seem to recall that in versions years ago the default was to delete them after installation. But the issue at the moment is how to get 10.04 and later to automatically delete the files after installation. Space is not a concern on my desktop PC nor my server. It is an issue with various virtual machine installations as they are limited in disk space and the more they take up the more there is to backup.

I have tried telling Synaptic to delete the files after installation but this does not change the performance of Update Manager.

Fedora Installation :: Possible To Update Packages On F12 USB Live?

Jan 4, 2010

I installed F12 to a live USB stick. When I boot up the system it says there are several hundred updates available. I've tried to update packages, but when I reboot the updates that claim to have been made do not appear. The system reverts to its original state after reboot.

So is it possible to do this? Can one have persistent packages? (this does seem to work with ubuntu)

Or is F12 on a live USB stick supposed to be pretty much the same thing as having a live (read-only) CD?

What I'd really like to do is have a small version of F12 on a USB stick that has up to date packages I need while dropping the packages I don't need.
