I've had a server running for over a year and it's been very stable. Suddenly (no config or software changes) it's behaving oddly. If I perform a network related activity, it appears to effect other separate network functions. Example: I get onto the machine using realvnc server and suddenly port 80 goes down, or I can access port 443 inside the network but not externally, or I can get to 443 but not 80. The server has two network cards. Switching to the second card appears to have had no effect. I also tried rebooting, switching in a new network cable, bouncing the network card (which does re-establish services, but not consistently). I have several servers and this is the only one misbehaving. It's running Debian Etch (as are a few others).
I am connecting servers using NFS4 the shared directories are on servers running Debian 4 while the one who read from them is Debian 5.0.3. The problem is one of these shared servers suddenly stop responding and you cannot list it from Debian 5 server, also df hang, and the web application that is using it does not respond to requests that use this shared directory since it is blocked. Then the load on the server start to increase until the server cannot respond (over 90). I have found many entries in the syslog that refer to this like:

I have tried the connection between the 2 servers using ping for one day and all are OK (zero lost)
There are 3 other servers that are running Debian 4 and are working fine.
I have an Asus EeePC 1005HA and I remember there was a way to fix this problem in the older version of Ubuntu but since this is the latest how would I go about fixing this problem?
I've got a BCM 4312 card on a Dell laptop running 10.04 and an Apple Airport network. Since I configured the Airport to use "WPA2 Personal" Authentication, my connection is flaky: it drops for no apparent reason and sometimes I can't connect at all. When authentication is turned off, the connection is rock solid.

I have a CentOS5 box here (actually running the latest release of EasyIDS). Everything was working fine for about half an hour, and now I can't access the box through a web browser on it's IP address. I can't ping the box either. If I log on to the server, I can ping other boxes on the network and external resources, but nothing seems to be able to see it. I checked to make sure HTTPD is running, and it is. The firewall is not running (or at least that's what it says when I do service --status-all).
I just installed F15 on a laptop that previous had F12 working well. During install, it finds my wireless card and seems to set it up fine. The full install ran with the wireless active without any problem that I could see. Now, when I start up, I see Network Manager tells me that the wlan is active, but it doesn't show my specific network. If I click on the NM tray icon and open up the panel, my network is shown but it is not "active".
I can double click on it and it will become active - shows the little globe next to the antenna. This works fine for about 2 web pages worth and then FireFox 4 stops being able to find web pages. If I go back to the panel, double click on my wireless network (which looks like it is active already), and reactivate it, I can get the page I was looking for in FireFox, but within a couple of minutes it will stop.
Likewise with yum, while I'm installing software, I'll occasionally get errors like this: [URL]: [Errno 14] curl#6 - "Couldn't resolve host" If I reactivate my wireless network in the NM panel, it continues fine. Other computers/phones connected to this network seem to work fine. Is NM known to be problematic in F15?
I've been having problems with the Atheros AR5001 wireless card in my EEE PC. Whenever I'm connected to an encrypted network of any description (WPA2 at home, WPA-PSK at work), the connection will drop out after some time, ask for the key again, then will drop out after a shorter time. This repeats until it's continuously asking for the key. This is no problem with an unencrypted connection. I've installed the madwifi module as per the instructions in this thread, but that doesn't seem to have helped.Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS, 2.6.32-33-generic i686 kernel.
My organization has been using PASV FTP via VSFTPD for some time now. We have defined the port range between 30000 and 33333 and as I mentioned, it has worked up to 20100108 (last Friday). It appears that VSFTPD is not negotiating the defined PASV port range, which we can see with both netstat and tcpdump. Has anyone here run into this before? Are there any VSFTPD hackers out there who know what mechanism VSFTPD is using to re-allocate the ports? I would think that it would release the port, and flag it as unused, or something.

I've two internet based server ( xx.xx.xx.xx and yy.yy.yy.yy ) The Y server is running VNC server and is responsible for answering to VNC sessions. But I need to hide the IP of Y server so I want X server to be as VNC Proxy and redirect all VNC sessions to Y server.
I guess the best way is to use iptables but actually I can't get it working so
I have a machine running with slackware64 13.1 and vnc servers is installed on it. It worked for months until yesterday, when I couldnt connect to the machine remotely.
I have 2 vnc "users" on this machine, root and "user". Each have their own desktop. Root has desktop :1 and user had desktop :2. Simple enough.

What has changed so it no longer works? I assume its not a network problem since the machines are all located in my home network and there is no firewall or router in between them.

I have installed a linux server in my office to run 16 machines. Its main use will be a internal mail server but will be also running websites.
I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 server x64 and have got apache running.
I am looking for the simplest more robust solution for smtp, pop3 and imap. I have only ever used qmail before and found it a pain to configure and its getting old so I though I should probably try something new. I have not much experience with running pop3 or imap on linux so would love a suggestion on that.
I've got a machine running Ubuntu Server that is on several VLANs. Each VLAN has its own subnet and the server has an address on each subnet. The switches are set to allow tagged traffic to the server for each VLAN that it is on. Switch ports ending with workstations are given untagged ports on whatever VLAN is appropriate. Workstations are given addresses on a subnet for each VLAN via DHCP. All this works great and hosts on any subnet/VLAN can access the server as normal via its address on that subnet/VLAN.
Accessing the machine by its address on a non-local subnet is where I run into a problem. Inter-subnet traffic has to go through a router, which has been set up appropriately. Running tcpdump on the server and pinging it from a workstation on a subnet, using its address on a different subnet, shows the server receives the ping, but sends no response:

My Pug Server has worked faithfully for many years just sitting in a closet. It is designed wo that you never need to add a monitor or keyboard as it is administered through a web interface. Recently it had a problem with the motherboard and I had to replace it, but the machine is now working. However, it no longer is visible as a network drive on my Windows machine.Unfortunately I have no idea where to start looking to see what the problem is. I did attach a keyboard and monitor and logged on, but everything looks okay (I can see my files, etc.).
This is an old machine (c. 2003), so has an old version of Linux (I have no idea what version, or even how to find out). Since it is never meant to be used directly it doesn't have any GUI installed, so I have to do everything using command line.Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can even start to determine what the problem is or how I can go about trying to fix it? At this point I would be happy just to get the files out and replace it with a newer NAS.
Just something that struck me while working on our virtual servers today.
I have bonded 3 NICs at the host in Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS. They are using mode 0 for Round-robin. Point is to increase the speed/performance of all the servers, but mainly the fileserver. The fileserver is a virtual server running Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS on VMware Server 2.0.
1) I noticed the NIC in the slave OS reported link speed as 1000 and Im unable to change it as the NIC (virtual one) doesnt support it. Does this not really matter, as the NIC doesnt exist, and it will run at higher speeds anyway? Or do I have to remove the bond on the host, bridge all 3 interfaces from the host to the slave OS, and then make a bond in the slave OS?
2) While at it, does mode 0 only increase performance on data being sent from the host or does it also increase the available incoming bandwidth?
In Gnome Places->Connect To Server dialog, I am having problem using the Custom Location Service Type. I enter in the URI as

Which would be fine if there was actually a place for me to enter the name which there is not. What am I doing wrong. This is the first time I have tried using the Connect To Server dialog. Normally I just use a script I wrote to mount my share in a folder on my local drive as some programs cannot access the mounted network folder. In a browser all I have to do is:

I tried using Windows Shares, but that did not work either. It does work if I click on network and access the share that way, but some programs like firefox and a few others that I want to save a file to my network drive do not show the network unless the share is mounted in a folder. So, I wrote a script:

I set up a ubuntu server 10.04 lts as file server in a network filled with xp, win 2003 and win 2008.
I noticed that if from any bill's SO machine i copy a file (for example a vob file of 1gb, or a lot of doc and pdf files) in the samba server, while the copy is in progress if in another windows I browse other folders shared in Samba, the copy process stops and say ' the name in the network is no more available( or something like this). It seems that samba pay attention on the fact that a user is browsing the share and doing so it seems that Samba forget that in one of its share there was a copy in progress, very annoing. A file server cannot do that, in this way is useless.
I would like to setup 2 linux machine each with two ethernet cards, and need to connect to two subnet e.g. 192.168.*.* and 10.0.*.* . If one linux machine out of order, the other will take over all the services(1 httpd and two named(192.168.*.1 and 10.0.0.1 as server ip). What network config is best and easy to failover to other machine?

I have a OpenSUSE 10.1 system on my college network and I am able to ssh to other college servers, but I cannot ping these servers. I am kind of at a loss on how to recover data from a 15 year old floppy (Simcity 2000, bought the copy off of ebay thinking it was the cd version and well...). At first I could see the files on the disk, but couldn't read them. So, I ran chkdisk on windows and it couldn't fix the disk. I have heard things about dd_rescue, which I have tried, but it just produces an error filled image that I can't recover any data from. I don't think it really tried all that hard to read the sectors that have problems.
