I have a lot of .pyc and .pyo files and I really need the space. I was wonder if I can remove them as I know python will create them automatically.At the moment, I need to make sure I have the space and only this files I can delete... should this be fine?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a vsftp server running, and we have problems sporadically where people (not the person who uploaded the file) cannot delete files uploaded from OSX machines. We never have this problem with files uploaded by PCs. Anyone ever heard of this or know what I should check? The users uploading the files all belong to the same group. Also, I think if you log in to the FTP server with another OSX machine, it will let you delete them. I'm looking at the folders now, they have drwxrwxr-x. When i try to delete them from a PC, it gives me a 550 Remove directory operation failed.
View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter what feels like weeks have tinkering around trying to get a Samba file server set up, I've finally given up! I have 4 drives and 2 groups:
1) Dev - Available to all users in both groups (normal and admin)
2) Misc - Available to users in admin group only
3) Admin - Available to users in admin group only
4) Accounts - Available to users in admin group only
Drives 1 and 2 are working fine, with the correct access rights. Drives 3 and 4 can be browsed by admins only, but no changes can be made at all - files & directories can't be renamed/moved/deleted. What is most confusing is that Drive 2 is set up exactly the same as Drives 3 and 4. The process I went through to get them working:

I searched the forum with various terms and didn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a common and/or newbie problem.It seems that when I have a USB driveplugged in to switch the files around, those that I delete are still taking up space. I first noticed it with a Chinese MP3 player and thought it was the player being crappy. I could still play all the songs that were supposedly gone. Today, I noticed it with a little thumb drive that I've had for years. I plugged it into my husband's computer running winXP, and the files showed up in a weird, unusable form. I was able to delete them for real.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI get a SD card. Put in the SD reader. It's empty. I go to my super-important-pictures-to-a-monthly-relatory folder and select all files. Select them for MOVE. Paste them on the SD card. When the move/paste process is finished, i click on the "Eject" button on top of the SD card name. Card's ejected. I can't access the card anymore. I take out the card and put on my other computer. From 300 pictures, there are only 10 available, the remaining ones are there, but with 0bytes and unrecoveable. I panic. I go back to my main computer, my pictures are not there anymore. The pictures were on the Home folder. I panic again. I reset the computer and boot on the LiveCD. I install foremost, scalpel, photorec and about everything till my USB drive complains about being filled up. I run everything and I can't recover my files. I'm in the danger of getting fired. Things like that makes Windows sounds more appealing. When you securely remove a pendrive, things get REALLY pasted there before screwing everything up with a removal.

For some reason after I delete files from it it still shows up as full and the files are shown in the hidden trash files. How do I get rid of these files? I can't delete them as they just show back up. Also, I tried to format the drive with gparted and it won't unmount. Those files couldn't be renamed or deleted, the file manager said that the files didn't exist - very weird. The files should have had some swedish characters in their file names. View 2 Replies View RelatedI did an update on one of my main computers last night. while in the update it reported "293 files to be REMOVED and 1 to be added".... it cranked away for some time and now all I get is a text login to my desktop. There is no graphics anymore. just a command line.
Is there any way to make it boot the way it used to or will I have to reinstall without formatting my hard drive (if so, how do I do this?)? I have checked and all my personal data is in tact. I use XBMC a lot and recenty i have been trying to download movies i have d/l using SABNZBDPLUS. I noticed my 320GB getting low so i tried deleting the files within the folder itself but got this message "Cannot move file to the deeted items folder, do you want to delete permanently?". Anyway i tried to delete but i guess it would not also the main folder had a lock icon on it.
So i read somewhere you can use nautilus in the terminal and once i navigated to the folder in question i pressed the delete key on my keyboard. The file is not in my trash can and i dont think is permenantly deleted as my disc space has not been reduced.
The question is simple. I had a FAT external pendrive with some thing of it, and I've stupidly shift-del eted 2 folders that now i needed. Could be possible to retrieve the deleted files?

I tried printf at the end but can't seem to get it to work. I'm not sure how to output that at the end of the string. Also I was looking at man find man and the difference btween -exec and -execdir. I don't understand what it's saying. Is -execdir executing rm m within the /opt/temp/logs directory the difference?

If I delete these files does it diminish the size of / var ? If yes, how to remove these and can I remove them ?
I have recently been helping my brother set up his computer with a fresh install of Fedora 11. Unfortunately things have not been going all that well. After having some problems with Fedora 11, such as it not liking his monitor and disabling Plymouth's graphical boot (I actually like to see what my systems doing!) things finally seemed to be going into place. Unfortunately the next day we were no longer able to log into his account. After hours of tweaking I finally found out it was that for some reason GNOME stopped liking his account.
This is where things went from bad to worse. I tired removing his own account and giving him a new one, unwittingly taking out his home directory in the process, all 80 gigabytes of it. And just as promised ext4 was extremely quick about it. What can I do to recover it? We have done similar things on NTFS on Windows XP, so I see no reason why a next-gen file-system like ext4 can't do it.
A friend of mine had inportant files on his windows 7 PC. the pc took a virus, he took it with some "experts" wich happily DELTED the partition and reinstalled W7, and apps, WITHOUT backing up his files.
Ibe faced similar cases before, and on windows ibe used Recuva with mixed resutls, but. Is there an application in linux i can install on my opensuse 11.4 box to do the same task? Can you guys recommend good linux software (available for suse) that will do this? I read about "TestDisk", but ibe never used it.
I need to get back two avi movie files but I've deleted hundreds and any recovery might try and drop them back on my small hard disk and overwhelm it! I know the files include the word 'Archer' but I'm using Formost, which is very easy to use, but it doesn't seem to allow for the searching of specific files by name. I can recover by type ie, avi, jpeg, pdf.....

I moved a few files from a directory in my home directory structure to the KDE trash folder, and then deleted them from the trash folder. About a minute later I regretted this, and now I'd like to see if there's any way to recover the files. First, are there any good utilities for restoring accidentally deleted files? If so, where would I look for these files? Does the KDE trash config file actually correspond to a physical directory somewhere, or do the files just remain hidden in their original location?

I have searched the smbd logs but no answer till now. How can I easily do it ? I know the date but the logs show nothing, I found that when I create a file/directory on that share samba logs this event. So, for deleted files/folders there must be some notes somewhere ... The thing is I don't really know for what word to grep.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI wiped out 60% of my VirtualBox .vdi files on one of my partions. The file sizes ranged from 3gb to 9gb files. (I did have some backups but 4 months ago). Needless to say I'll be backing my files up more often (especially my Virtual Image .vdi files). So here are the steps...: [ Look, I know it seems like allot of steps, but its worth it in the end!!]
(By the way, these are all ext3 filesystems, I would imagine you could recover fat32 [windows} type filesystems too, but I just did this under Linux filesystems) 1--> If you've found yourself deleted any files, try to unmount the partition. ( In my case it was an external 2 1/2 hard drive, command used to unmount is sudo umount /dev/sda3)
1b--> If you only have one partition, then I'd suggest shutting down your computer and putting a Live CD in it (preferably the Ubuntu Live CD).
2--> Whether 1 or 1b applies to you, install ext3grep from Synaptic or any package manager. (if you had to reboot via a live CD, make sure you unmount the partition that has the deleted files.(example umount /dev/sda1 or in my case it was umount /dev/sda3). If you're on the LiveCD of Ubuntu, I believe it will let you install the ext3grep package using Synaptic Package manager and it will put it in RAM under the Live Desktop Session.
3--> Now here's the important part before you proceed any further. If the partition that has the deleted files is taking up 30gb (yes 30gb used space), then you have to mount an existing partition GREATER than 30gb ***FREE*** SPACE. I happened to have another partition /media/sda7 already mounted that had 50 gb free.
So at this point, you must go to any directory under your (recovery partition, i'm referring to my 50gb partition /media/sda7). To do this, run the command cd /media/sda7, now you're in your (recovery partition). You can make a new directory if you want, or just use any existing directory on the /media/sda7 partition. (I made a directory something like mkdir ./Yikes ) So I get into the directory by cd /media/sda7/Yikes then run the following command....:
ext3grep --restore-all /dev/sda3
4--> ***Keep in mind, you just ran that command from the /media/sda7/Yikes directory on your recovery partition. ***This will create a folder called "RESTORED_FILES" under/in the Yikes Directory.*** The ext3grep command you just submitted will try to recover every single file on that partition that has the deleted files (i.e. /dev/sda3). There is a way to restore single files and their paths, but I got frustrated and just did a full restore.
5--> Depending on the partition size and number of files, it could take 30 minutes to 2 hours or more before you start to see messages in the terminal screen saying "Restored file... Abc.txt or sam.jpg". Let it finish!!! At first you will see it saying "Group 1, Group 2 and crazy characters going across the screen, that's normal." You know it's begining the actual restore process when you start to see "Restored file...".
6--> At this point you can open a DIFFERENT terminal screen and do cd /media/sda7/Yikes/RESTORED_FILES to see the files being restored under the various directories. This does work because I was able to restore at least 25gb worth of files. Again, file sizes ranged from 3gb to 9gb!!
7--> Final step when the 1st terminal screen is done restoring the files, you can either open them up from the /media/sda7/Yikes/RESTORED_FILES directory to check them out, or you can copy them back to where they were deleted before. BUT I WOULD SAY TO MAKE A BACKUP OF THE RESTORED FILES, or keep the restored files in the /media/sda7 partition.
-->Again, I did a "ext3grep --restore-all /dev/sda3" command from the partition that had plenty of free space (i.e. 50gb) to restore the 30 gb worth of deleted files (and that ext3grep --restore-all /dev/sda3 command was run in the following directory /media/sda7/Yikes ).
-->Remember to unmount the /dev/sda3 partition (i.e. the partition that has the deleted files). DO NOT MOUNT /devs/sda3 when running the ext3grep --restore-all command. The ext3grep documentation states you don't want to write anything to that partition because you run the risk of writing over files or directories that could be recovered.
-->This ext3grep utility saved me Big Time!! 4 to 5 months of work restored because of this utility. You can get it from Synaptic Package Manger searching for ext3grep.
