Security :: IPTables And SSH Rate Limiting

May 20, 2011

I'd like to discourage the SSH bots that try to log into my system (CentOSv5), and among other things, I've changed my SSH port to someting other than 22. As well, I've been playing around with the idea of some iptables rules (note port 22 is used here as example):
Code:
# Allow SSH with a rate limit
iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p tcp --syn --dport 22 -m hashlimit --hashlimit 15/hour --hashlimit-burst 3 --hashlimit-htable-expire 600000 --hashlimit-mode srcip --hashlimit-name ssh -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p tcp --syn --dport 22 -j LOG --log-prefix "[DROPPED SSH]: "
iptables -A INPUT -i ppp0 -p tcp --syn --dport 22 -j DROP
I am *NOT* an iptables expert. What do you all think about the above code snip?

General :: Copy File In GNU With Progress Bar And Rate Limiting?

Jun 22, 2010

Is there any good tool in GNU/Linux that copy files like cp, but also shows progress and limits speed (and changes limit without interruption) like pv?

Prototype: find source_directory | cpio -H newc -o | pv -s `du -bs source_directory/ | awk '{print $1}'` | (cd /destination/directory && cpio -di)

Also rsync -aP source_directory /destionation/directory/, but this shows progress bars individually and can't change rate after started. Or may be I should just write a wrapper for pv/cpio? Done.

Networking :: IPtables And Rate Limit Module

Apr 8, 2010

I'm a newbie in the world of netfilter/iptables. I've read an article about iptables and rate limit module:
Code: iptables -A INPUT -p ICMP --icmp-type echo-request -m limit --limit 1/minute --limit-burst 5 -j ACCEPT The firewall will let the first 5 packets in in the first minute, -limit-burst 5; this means, however, that the packets/minute now is 5, so any further packets are blocked until packets/minute = 1, i.e. 5 minutes later. In the sixth minute, packets/minute will be 5/6 < 1, so another ping request will be let in. When the extra ping request is admitted, the ratio becomes 6/6 = 1 again, and packets are DROPped again until the next minute.

Now I have some problems in understanding how it works.
For example: I want ping google.com in this way: the kernel firewall permits to send the first 5 packet to google.com (--limit-burst 5) and then it blocks the remaining packets for 5 minutes. At sixth minute (because I wish a limit rate equal to 1/minute: --limit 1/minute) one packet can send to google again. And so on.

So my rule should be:
Code: iptables -A OUTPUT -d url_of_google -p icmp --icmp-type echo-request -m limit --limit 1/minute --limit-burst 5 -j ACCEPT In this way, if i digit
Code: ping -f url_of_gogle I expect that the first 5 packets are accepted (and so zero '.' will print on the screen) and then for the remaining 5 minutes no one packets will be accepted (and so a long string of '.' will print). But it doesn't work...

In man pages of ping we read (about -f option):
-f Flood ping. Outputs packets as fast as they come back or one hundred times per second, whichever is more. For every ECHO_REQUEST sent a period ``.'' is printed, while for every ECHO_REPLY received a backspace is printed. This provides a rapid display of how many packets are being dropped.

Fedora Security :: Limiting Sudo - Giving Full Privileges To The Wheel Group In The Sudoers File

Feb 15, 2011

I have previously set up sudo via adding my name to the wheel group and then giving full privileges to the wheel group in the sudoers file. Now I choose to learn to limit that. Had noticed the most frequent use I have of sudo is to run yum update. This got me thinking, could I remove the wheel group privileges and add the following line in sudoers to limit the privilege to simply running yum, and furthermore, make it so I could run yum without a password:

## Allow root to run any commands anywhere
rootALL=(ALL) ALL
Troy ALL= NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/yum

I think that would in fact work (if I understood one of the pages here, it will work). However, upon further thinking I realized that in such a case then anyone sitting at my computer could then use yum, without a password, to install or remove any file on my system probably not a good idea. As a result I have to ask, can I tighten the privilege even further such that the only privilege so given was to run yum update and nothing else? (for example if they ran yum install it would fail). If you can do it, how?

Last, I was going to limit the privilege, time wise and try wise, by adding the following to the sudoers file:

# Defaults specification
Defaults:Troy timestamp_timeout=0, passwd_tries=3

Will that really work to limit the elevated privilege so I don't have elevated privileges lingering about, or is there a better way to do so?

Fedora Security :: Allow DNS In Iptables

Feb 1, 2009

I have been struggling with this for a very long time now. I have installed Fedora Core 9 on my computer. I have set it up as a caching-nameserver and this is working.

Then I wanted to secure my server with iptables, and I have so far made this script:

# Load the connection tracker kernel module
modprobe ip_conntrack
iptables -F
iptables -P INPUT DROP
iptables -P FORWARD DROP

[Code]....

I can reach the dns server with ping. When trying Nslookup it says that it got SERVFAIL from 127.0.0.1 trying next server, and then it times out.

My resolv.conf file lists:

nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver DNS-server

Security :: Iptables :everything Works Except Ftp

Jun 3, 2010

i set up a dmz to have a internet web server and ftp server, and ssh only from local network, so i wrote a iptables script to load during boot :

[Code]...

The problem is that everything works fine ( i have the same rules for other services such as samba, nfs, mysql on another server) BUT ftp there is no way to make it work. not even locally.when i try to connect, i log in, but while listing the directory i get MLSD ... and it hangs like this for a moment, then i get error message "connection time out" , "impossible to list directory". if i turn off the iptables script no problem, ftp works fine.. but why all services work and ftp no?

how do i have to modify the rules? what is strange also is that if i set as OUTPUT policy "accept", the server seems to be offline."host unknown" error message. I was thinking the rule INPUT is fine cause at least i can login, but the dir list is not going out, so gotta modify output rules. or state?

Security :: IPTables - How To Set Default Allow

Mar 19, 2010

I've started a new job and have inherited a couple of RHEL4 64-bit servers. The firewall on them is currently disabled. I'm struggling to get them up and running as iptables is not the most user-friendly application. This lead me to downloading and trying a GUI front-end: Guarddog. Great app! But it doesn't have the default behavior I'm looking for. Here is what I need:

Default behavior: Firewall should be wide open, allowing ALL ports/IP's/TCP/UDP in and out of the server.
Blacklist: Oracle TCP port 1521 needs to be blocked in/out of the server.

This will help get us passed our company's security vulnerability scan. (We aren't able to patch/upgrade Oracle at this time because we'd lose vedor support with a legacy app). I will use these settings as a starting point, and then once I learn more and get more comfortable with iptables (or a GUI app) then I can fine tune things to make them more secure. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong) once I get a script I just copy it into /etc/rc.firewall and it will load when iptables starts.

Security :: Iptables To Block Ip From Ftp?

Is this how I would do that?

iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --destination-port 21 -d ! 168.192.1.2 -j DROP

This should block all incoming connections on port 21 from 192.168.1.2, correct? Thus preventing that IP from logging into my FTP.

I've been researching and cannot come up with a way to suppress logging for these drops.
