OpenSUSE Install :: Set System-Wise Environment Variables ?

Sep 9, 2010

I just recently reinstalled openSUSE 11.3 last night with the GNOME desktop. Since I'm starting fresh again, I'd like to set up my System as flawless as possible.

So, my question is stated in the Title. How do you set System-Wide environment variables on OpenSUSE 11.3 // GNOME? I usually set them by adding an export to my ~/.bashrc, but I remember in Ubuntu that I could add them to /etc/environment. I checked that file out on my system, and it has a the default comment on it stating:

"This file is parsed by pam_env module...Syntax: simple "KEY=VAL" pairs on seperate lines"

This seems to be the spot to add my "export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/..etc", etc. but I wanted to clarify before I went ahead and made any changes.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 - Any Way To Sort Rhythmbox By Album (Year Wise)

Feb 3, 2011

I just migrated to Ubuntu 10.04 from windows and I could not be more satisfied, except for one minor, nitpicky detail. In iTunes I was able to sort my music by "album by year". That is, my music was sorted primarily by artist, then by album year. So each artist had their albums listed in chronological order. My library is meticulously tagged, so every track on every album is tagged with the same YEAR value. Is this possible in Rhythmbox? Is there a plugin or will i have to edit a .conf file (or similar) somewhere? I'm new to Ubuntu, but not afraid of getting my hands a bit dirty, so to speak.

Ubuntu Security :: How To Block Subdomain Of Any Site

Mar 26, 2010

My question is how to block a subdomain of a site. To make it as clear as possible, I'll give an example. I am regularly entering this arbitrary site [URL] which redirects me to this page [URL] and this index.html takes an image from a subdomain which is a subfolder of itself, that is: [URL]. What I am asking is blocking the images to be taken, but not the main page itself, i.e. to block www.somesite.abc/images/ without blocking the overall www.somesite.abc.

My idea was to use the /etc/hosts file by redirecting to loopback address:
Code:
127.0.0.1 www.somesite.abc/images
But it looks as if it doesn't affect things at all. Should I use it another way? Modifying /etc/hosts.deny maybe useful?

Everything is working perfect, but I want also to be able to block certain kinds of attacks. There are some really good examples on the internet, but I don't now if they contain all kinds of attacks which are relevant to my situation. To be clear, I only server web content through port 80 and use ssh to remote login.

Security :: Firewall Infront Of Router Setup?

Mar 9, 2011

I am trying to setup a firewall using Centos 5.5. The machine has 2 NICs, one connecting to the ISP/Modem and the other connected to a DIR-655 wireless router. The nic is connecting to the internet port on the router.

I do not want DHCP on the Firewall machine but on the wireless router.

[ISP/Modem]<--->[machine eth0]<--->[machine eht1]<--->[DIR-655 internet port]
IP from ISP Dynamic 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.2

IP's on the DIR-655 LAN will be 124.168.0.0/24 network lets say.

I have setup routes on the eth0 192.168.0.0/24 and 124.168.0.0/24
and added 124.168.0.0/24 to eth1.

I can ping eth0 and eth1 but cannot ping 192.168.1.2.

this setup is not actually connected to the internet so I disabled iptables to try testing the ping and still no good.

Security :: Public Facing OpenVPN - Open Any Ports On The Router / Firewall

Feb 14, 2011

Within the documentation of example OpenVPN setups there is a setup that shows an OpenVPN Server with two network interfaces. One interfaces is plugged into the public internet network and the second interface is plugged into the private network.

Normally I assume that it would be best to place the OpenVPN system inside the network behind the router and firewall and open only the ports needed on the router to allow access to the OpenVPN system. All other router ports would be closed. This is the first example they show. To see what I am talking about see page(s) 6-7 here -> [URL]

If one were to use the two interface public facing setup, when would that setup best be justified? I guess if you didn't want to open any ports on the router/firewall then this could be justified but then you have to lock down this public system individually instead of having it protected by the network firewall.
