I have added a new user by following command :
root# useradd -u 100 -g 120 -d /product -s /bin/bash sandesh
I am not able to access it in /export/home directory..?
Do you think there is a way of accessing different user data from another account which I have set up.
Ie. user 1 = account has messed up
user 2 = account works fine
access user account 1 home directory from user 2 work space?
I'm developing an application in which one user must run java software that I'm compiling as another user. I wanted to give user A permission to see the bin direcory of my workspace, which is in the home directory of user B. I was wondering how can this be done? I gave the bin direcotry full read/execute premissions, but since it's in my home directory user A can't navigate to it.
I know there are a few ways I could get around the problem but they arn't very elegant. I was wondering if there is a simple method for giving a user access to a specific directory without giving access to all the parent directories. I tried symbolic link but user A still can't access it, and a hard link to a directory isn't allowed in Linux. I don't feel like making a hard link to every single file in the bin directory, and I'm not sure that would work anyways, since every recompile overwrites them.
In my recent installations of Debian stable release (Jessie) with Gnome and Cinnamon respectively, I added my wife as a normal user. A home directory was created automatically for her.
In these installations, I am able to access her home directory, while, in the past, I was not allowed to access her home directory on previous Debian releases.
2 of us have been googling all morning trying to find out how we can restrict ftp logins to their own home directories only but nothing we've found so far has worked. We've tweaked sshd_config so that they default to their home directory but they are able to navigate up/across/down to everything. This is a "straight-out-of-the-box" debian 5.0.5 Netinst. Just a basic system with Apache/MySql/PHP/SSH and no desktop.

I have a Supermicro X6 mobo (yes its rather old) and the Bios recognizes the drives as Master 2 and Master 3 ide , but the linux will not recognize the drives. The system is running RH8 kernel 2.4.31 and i dont have the option of upgrading the kernel at the moment. Is there any way to get the linux to recognize the drives?

Goggling the problem - references to an .ICEauthority in my home directory are mentioned as linked to this problem. However "ls -la /home/charles" reveals that there is no .ICEauthority file present.

I have a directory /var/www/test:drwxrwxr-x 5 root www-data 4096 2010-01-04 13:51 test And I've added myself as a member of the group www-data. Problem though is when i go into /var/www/test I still can't do anything, whether it's creating a new file or directory or editing files there. The files within the directory are also 775 and setup under group www-data.

Did some test, user joe can ssh to the server but unable to do anything aside from logging in, even a simple ls command will immediately close the putty session. I added my wife to my system and gave her adm admin access. I compared my access to her's and it is the same. Yet, when I log on as her, the 1TB USB drive does not show up in Places.
I tried mounting it and it said it was already mounted in /media/FantomDid find with "ls" command that is indeed mounted there, but since it doesn't show in Places, it cannot be accessed.Been searching and hunting and cannot find out why this is. If I would have made up her userid from the start, I wouldn't have this problem, but since Ijust added her,I cannot find a way to get her UID to "see" the Fantom USB drive
Can't log into my XFCE desktop like I normaly do. all the sudden I get notified that my xsession lasted less then 10 secondsLooking at the error I can see this:
Unable to access file /home/username/.iceauthority: No such file or directory
Using failsafe I can start a terminal. From terminal I tried to start X
Code: sudo startx Result: Running on desplay:0
So I tried to run this;
Code: sudo startxfce4 And I get up a graphical desktop.
So this is not a critical situation as I easily can use this method to log on, but as there has been something causing this I would like to be able to resolve this nonetheless. Btw it is not the old chmod trick in play here, cause my .iceauthority file is gone alltogheter.
I was setting up a Samba server and I ran into some problems with SELinux related to the context of the home directories. I made a user account, say "UserAccount", with a default home directory "home/UserAccount". Afterwards I realized that I needed to move the home directory of this particular user to another location, say "/home2/UserAccount". So I created the new directory, changed the permissions, and used Gnome's system-config-user to change the user's home directory.
I then set-up the Samba server, activated samba_run_unconfined and samba_enable_home_dirs in SELinux, and made an account for UserAccount. When testing the Samba account for UserAccount SELinux denied read access. I checked the context and the new home directory did not appeared to have been updated. I had to manually run:
restorecon -R -v /home2/UserAccount
to set the context on the new home directory. I'm not very familiar with SELinux, so my question is this: is this normal security policy or is a bug in the system-config-user tool? I have installed SUSE yesterday.Everything has been fine except two.1. I can't access my hard disk drives. It says it need to install online some software for it but it can't.I am attaching a screen shot of the error I encounter.2. I have Ubuntu installed in another disk drive but in the Grub menu there in no option to boot to Ubuntu OS.How should I change the text in 'menu.lst' to solve the problem?

I installed a new version on a new primary drive and mounted this secondary drive as the new /home. Problem is, even though the users are the same names and I can access the home directories for the users, I cannot login directly to their home directories, as I get the following error: -

Now, since the usernames are correct and the users are in the passwd file with the correct home directory paths, could it be user ID's that are different or something else? It's not as though I cannot access the home directories for the users, simply that I cannot log directly into them from a login prompt.

I want to login as root and have access to '/' as my home directory. What do I have to do to get this to work?
I was able to synch my folders to Ubuntu One.However, when I add any new files to one of the synched folders, it is not synching up to Ubuntu One. I've tried re-synching the folder where I place the file and all I get is the circular arrow with the ! in it. I've also tried disconnecting and connecting in the Device tab on "Ubuntu One Preferences". Am I missing a procedure here or is this a bug? I would hope that adding, removing, or updating files would automatically be synched.

i'm new to linux and just installed Ubuntu and decided to play around with it. i just executed
Code: useradd test which supposedly creates a folder in the home directory '/home/test' but when i look in there i can't see it i also did a
Code: grep test /etc/passwd which returns: 'test:x:1001:1001::/home/test:/bin/sh' which i believe means it is meant to exist.
Addendum: I have also now noticed that when i log in and log back in i have the option to login as 'test' but it prompts me for a password which i did not set :s
I'm using Mac OS X's Terminal.app shell to compile and run Fortran programs. One such program resides outside of my home directory (it is in the Applications folder, which resides on my hard drive but seems to be outside of my home folder). How can I navigate into this directory using Terminal.app to run the programs that reside there?

Running NFS on Fedora 10. Exports fine. I tested it locally. I tested the NFS configuration by trying to access the exported directory from my local machine, before testing it from a remote machine. While logged in as root, I created a new directory "/mnt/nfstest".
Then I mounted the NFS share at the new directory I created:
[root@eric root]# mount -t nfs localhost:/mnt/nfs /mnt/nfstest
When I tried to mount on the remote client:
[root@frank root]# mount -t nfs eric:/mnt/nfs /mnt/nfstest
After a while I got:
# mount eric:/mnt/nfs /mnt/nfstest
mount.nfs: mount system call failed
I tried strace but wasn't sure what I was looking for, but I've attached the results as a .odt file.
I have just installed fedora 13 onto my old PC. Everything is great apart from the fact that i cannot access the internet. My isp is TalkTalk, they do not support linux, and have suggested that i contact the Geek squad who might be able to help me for the princely sum of �30. i think that all that i need is the ip address for my Isp or something equally simple and my problem will be solved. failure to resolve this issue means that i might have to go back to windows.

iam learning to setup a NFS server with fedora14. I have gone through couple of materials for this topic. I have a doubt. Say if i have user1 till user5 on my NFS server with their home directory under the /home and the /home directory is shared. If user1 logs into a client machine then will he be able to see home folders for the other users or just his own home folder. Because in the /etc/exports file there was an option saying "subtree" and according to my understanding this means that the subdirectories under /home will also be shared. Does that mean all the users should be able to see all other users home directory and its contents but not read/write?? Correct me if iam wrong.
