I'm trying to split a string, to later iterate using a for loop like
Code:
for (( i=0; i<5; i++))
But, my script returns an array with the size 1.
Here's the script:
Code:
aver=$(grep "avg" A.txt | awk '{ print $2 }');
a=$(echo $aver | tr " " "
");

splitting a string by every nth characters. I'm using Python 2.7.1 because I'm using older libraries, if that matters.
For example, if this is my input:
Quote:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Sed ac elit nibh, vitae venenatis ligula. Vestibulum a varius turpis.
Splitting it by every 10th character should produce this list:
Quote:
[ "Lorem ipsu", "m dolor si", "t amet, co", "nsectetur ", "adipiscing", " elit. Sed", " ac elit n", "ibh, vitae", " venenatis", " ligula. V", "estibulum ", "a varius t", "urpis." ]

I have an array called @logons. How can I step thru the array and split the fields? This is what I have so far, but doesnt work. I got the feeling I the split statement syntax is incorrect.
Code:
print @logons;
foreach my $logons(@logons){
($userid, $ip) = split(',',$logons);
[code]....
Update: Appears the data in @logons has a column header from the mysql query which I used to populate it with. So that code which I was testing does indeed work.

I need to call a function that takes a string array as argument, declared like this:Code:int someFunction(/* some parameters... */, const char* s[]);I'd like to know how to allocate memory for the string array. I know a string is an array of chars and an array is a pointer to the first element, then a string array should simply be a two dimensional char array. But is it a single memory block where all strings are stored consecutively?? Or is it a base vector where each element is a pointer to a separate memory block that contains a single string?More specifically: should I malloc() a single memory block large enough for all the strings? or should I allocate separate blocks for each string plus an extra one for the base vector?

What is the best way to merge lines, in sed, awk or perl, that occur between certain strings? I'm new to sed scripting and I have been working on this for some time now. I have a large file (sample below) that I need to edit.
What I need looks something like this.
I'm working with a very large file so simply merging all the lines then adding a new line character before ">contig" and after "translated" won't work, at least not with sed.

I am new to perl and am having trouble adding some strings together.
My full code is below:
The problem is $NewCommandB is always split into two lines, where the second line contains the "/atlas2/<blah>/<etc>/..." string. Since I am generating a .sh file to execute a lot of similar commands I need the string to all be on one line. Any idea why I get this behaviour and any suggestion on how to tell perl to make $NewCommandB a one line string?
Btw for completeness finalFileList.txt contains just file names one line after another:

I want to put a string, such as the one found in the image, into an array that will later be chopped into individual words and put into another array of individual words found in the initial string. (or, perhaps, I would be able to do that initially, but for now, that is the goal)My question is, how can I do that without using quotation marks?

I have a sed match that matches for certain string of a regex expression:
Code:
tname=$(echo "$contents" | sed -n 'some pattern')
How do I match for multiple strings in the $contents and return them as an array? for example
Code:
contents="this is a text, just to match patterns, here is another text to be matched"
the sed func would be able to recognize both "text"s, but only one is outputted?
Possible to put it in an array? so ${bar[0]} gives one and ${bar[1]} gives another

As awk programmers may know, we can print range of lines with awk, from an initial pattern until a final pattern as follow:
Code:
awk '/Initial_String/,/Final_String/' inputfile
Well, I have this inputfile:
Code:
[code]...
Once having those elements in that way within an array(a[]), I want to be able to manipulate the array (a[]) and copy its elements
to another array (b[]) in different order (all lines joined in a single line separated with commas), as follow:
Code:
Category,Adventure,Titles,Robinson,Crusoe,Saturday,Authors,Daniel-Defoe,Ian-McEwan
Only inserting the missing "array" coding and based and follow the code I've written Not needed to create a new code to do it with other method.

This may be a basic bash array/string operation related question, but I couldn't find any direct answer. So here it goes:I have a lot of data sorted in various directories. All directories need same processing except for a special group of directories. I have a symbolic link of the script in discussion in each directory. I want the script to get the name of the current directory, check if that belongs to special group and do specific operations.So I get the name of the directory
Code:
mm=`basename `pwd``
Now the the group of directories that needs something different to be done, contains these

I've come across an unusual requirement for a service in my Ubuntu system.Simply put, I need to find a way to search for all instances of a term in a file, delete lines containing containing that term, and delete four lines below each instance of that term. ither that, or copy the entirety of a file to a new file and skip over all lines containing the term plus four below it.This sounds kinda weird, I know. Without going too far into detail, I either have to change the logfile format for a server I'm running which is a huge pain in the butt, or I can just run a script to edit an HTML report generated from said logs. (Said report is really just for managers to peruse, and I like my log format, so I'm pursuing option 2.)
