Apr 26, 2010I've been using rubyripper quite happily on Karmic, now I've moved to Lucid and discovered a bit of an issue. rubyripper will pause for several minutes between tracks with ruby 1.8. If I upgrade to ruby 1.9.1 the gui client won't run due to an issue with libgtk2-ruby not being available for 1.9.1.
The cli version of rubyripper under 1.9.1 is blazingly fast, so that is what I'm using at the moment, but I do prefer the gui.
Anyone have any insight into this? Googling suggests there may be a bug in ruby 1.8.7 that caused the long pauses, but it was supposed to have been fixed in 1.8.7.249 i.e. the default Lucid version.

Oct 22, 2010There are a few things not working properly. Ruby version manager seems ok but untill i get working with ruby i don't know if it is working properly. One thing that is not there is irb Interactive ruby is not available according the the message i get.
Well i have no idea what readline is but i did everything that is on that webpage referance page [url]. I have got a lot of progress and learned heaps about linux shell and bash terminal. The thing is i need to get this going and have tried feenode but it is very foreign and how it works i do not have a clue. I have got 2 things resolved so far through this forum but using other threads in it. i need to get irb going before i can progress to using ruby on Rails properly.
I am using a Eeepc running ubuntu easy peasy its version 9.04 of ubuntu. I need the whole of rails to work and want to get a handle on using ruby version manager along with the apache stack with mysql/phpmyadmin and am using this as a dummy run for setting up a development system.

May 25, 2011When I use GMail with Konqueror, it switches to basic HTML becasue "my browser isn't supported".
Recently I tried Google Reader in Konqueror. It said that my browser isn't supported and Google Reader won't work. But it works perfectly.
I wonder if this means that GMail would work if not for their artifical limitation of checking which browser you have? Is there a way to circumvent it?

Apr 5, 2011One one my criteria for client machines is the ability "just work" from a generic business standpoint. By this, I mean any user needs the ability to drop in a jump drive or download that contains MS office formatted stuff, work with it, and save it in the same billie friendly format.
That means OOFFICE, right now. Which NEEDS the GTK libs (I confess I have heard of a QT version, but it's the same dilemma, really)
So, why do I bother with Openbox, XFCE, LXDE, E1[6-7], Blackbox, Fluxbox, etc? All the bloat I'm saving on WMs is rendered superfluous by the monsterbig GTK+ libs for the office suite Why not just give up and run a stripped gnome core?
This is really an open rant, but I'd love to hear if anybody has addressed this problem successfully. I guess I'm craving an opensource suite with Office's power and no bloat (I'd also love to meet st. nicholas, the easter bunny, and that guy who smokes marlboros in 'the x files')

Nov 16, 2015Getting Enemy Territory Quake wars to run in Sid? I have steam working, but I can't get the popular Linux title ETQW to work. First I was getting the typical error when ia32-libs is not installed. So instead I ran "apt-get install libsdl1.2debian:i386" and that seemed to make the game get further in boot instead of the lib error, however then I'm spammed with (to the point I can't scroll up to read the error)

Jun 18, 2010I am looking to buy a mp3 player that would be 100% compatible with linux. I recently returned my ipod touch because without going into details, it was a nightmare to get running in linux, it actually wouldn't run. Now that I am free again, I would like recommendations for a mp3 player with roughly the following features:
-100% compatible with linux
-compatible with windows (in case I want to transfer stuff from my gf's laptop)
-can play pretty much all the most popular file formats from linux
-application to convert files so the player can read them (I am thinking about itunes here);
-has FM radio;
-has a decent GUI (no monochrome text only interface like the ipod shuffle (?);
I would think 4GB is enough for me. I am not the kind of person to pack my player with 600GB of stuff and empty it once a year. I will probably add/remove stuff everyday. I also wouldn't mind if it can play podcasts. I also don't mind buying from less known companies. I just need to make sure if it craps out, I can return it or get it repaired within canada.

it doesn't (to be precise, the script still works, but myX11application is not executed). Of course, scripts are run by user "apache", who doesn't have access to X11 server and doesn't even have DISPLAY variable defined.I installed virtual framebuffer Xvfb, created a small bash script:

and called it with exec from php, but it still doesn't run since it looks like Xvfb can't start if the normal X server is running (I need that for development purposes). The reported error from Xvfb is

The ANSYS Launcher could not be started The most likely reason is that your DISPLAY environment variable I either not set (i.e. issue setenv DISPLAY dev:0.0 where dev is your device name) or is set to a device that is not accepting the connection. I was hoping someone could explain to me what the DISPLAY environment variable is and how to set it.

Feb 4, 2011I just installed GNAT GPS and would like it to display under Applications->Programming drop down menu. How does one do this? I have read about creating a .desktop file but tried that and it still does not appear under the menu I like. It does appear on the desktop but not because of the .desktop file.
OS: fedora 14 63-bit
CPU: CPU AMD-64
An example file (if needed) would be nice.
Also, just as a extra, has anyone found the GNAT GPS icon (.png) file?

Dec 2, 2010I have built a database driven web application that has a user and group system that works in a similiar way that Linux handles user access. Breif explanation: A users can access various resources, the resources are assigned to a single group and users can have many groups.

Lets say that RedRanger needs to be denied access to resource a if I remove him from group 33 he can no longer access b or c which is no good. The only alternative is to change a's group and add everyone else to the new group, this isn't so bad for 3 users, but what about 3,000?

This is done whenever the UPS battery is about to die, so that the files get saved. open-Office/text-editor applications that can be saved using keystrokes will have to be found from the running processes and keystrokes should be sent to them from a C program that was started in non-graphics stage. ie: from a C program that forks into memory as a daemon before xwindows part starts. How to I send keystrokes to a running application? (like cotrol + F and then wait and then send next set of keystrokes till the file is saved as a new file or as the same file itself), either from C program or a script?

General :: Can't Get Ruby To Update Properly
Aug 11, 2010(Using Archlinux) I downloaded Ruby 1.8.7-174 a while ago and installed it via the tarball (not pacman). I was trying to update to 1.8.7-299, but I can't get it to work. Per the readme, I do the following steps, all of which complete without error:
./configure
make
make install
After install finishes however, I still have -174 installed instead of -299.
