Programming :: Pty Programming-Extra Newline ?

Nov 11, 2009

I'm having a hard time figuring out why the program posted below prints an extra newline every time I type the enter key.This program is using the master pseudo-terminal to send the password and receive the output from the slave(connected to the passwd program).I suspect this has to do with the terminal line discipline(s)(2 considering the master and slave), but I can't really understand why.I have tried turning on/off several terminal special characters but to no avail.

Source code follows(compiled in x86, Slackware-13.0 - linux-2.6.31.5 - gcc 4.3.3):

Software :: Extra Newline At End Of File?

Apr 11, 2009

I've noticed when I create a generic textfile in vim and have a trailing newline at the end of the file, when I open it with kate it has 2 new lines at the end of the file instead! This is on a fedora machine. The same behavior is observed when I copy the file over to my windows machine and open it in notepad++ (which is able to handle both unix and dos newlines) - 2 newlines instead of 1.

Feeling curious, I tried creating a textfile in vim on my ubuntu machine and used gedit to open it, but surprisingly gedit displayed it correctly - only 1 newline.

Programming :: Prevent Sed From Replacing With Newline

Nov 28, 2009

I'm writing a script to replace some text that exists in about 50 .lex, .y, and .cc source code files, sometimes more than once in a file. Sometimes the text is in a multiline C comment, and other times it's within a multiline C string.

I use sed to grab the start and end of each line and wrap the new text in the old whitespace and/or quotes and Problem is, sed is changing the characters into a newline.

Is there a way to tell sed to not process escape sequences? I tried using several variations of

Code:

To no avail. Or could it be bash?

I would give up on the script and do it by hand, but this is something that I must do from time to time.

Here's the function which replaces the first occurrence found:

Code:

When $post is printed by echo, it shows the - but by the time the file is on disk, it becomes a newline. What should I do to ensure that it stays as the characters ?

If I write the next command, it replaces the first tab in each line with a newline. How can I make it replace the 7th tab in each line?

Programming :: Extract Extra Packages In A Separate File?

Now I would like to create a third file which contains only those packages which are present in package-a.txt but NOT in package-b.txt. The file should look like this:

Code:

package2
package4

Note: The world "install" is also to be removed for all packages. Using diff command I could get something like this:

Code:

temp# diff -yb package-a.txt package-b.txt | grep "<"
package2 install <
package4 install <

temp#

But not sure how to remove instances of "install" and "<".

Programming :: Does Declaring Variable Inside A Function Give An Extra Overhead On An Application

May 14, 2011

Does declaring variable inside a function give an extra overhead on an application? Would it be better to declare the variable globally and just reuse it? Example

Code:

#include <blah>
char mybuffer[2048];
int main()

[code]....

The only difference is the declaration of my variable. Since myfunction() will be called many times will it add an additional overhead if it will create mybuffer[2048] over and over?

Programming :: Extra "10" Printed After Every Conversion From ASCII To Int?

Dec 1, 2009

I have a very basic program which I wrote, to print the integer equivalents of an ASCII character. The code is below:

Code:

#include<stdio.h>
int main(void)
{
char c;

[code]....

The code is supposed to take a character as input and print the integer equivalent of that character. But the problem is that, after printing the integer equivalent, it prints an extra '10', every time.

Code:

f
102
10

[code].....

Why does this extra '10' always come? When the code is just a simple:

Code:

#include<stdio.h>
int main(void)
{

[code]....

The code works just fine. There is no extra '10' displayed. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 with gcc-4.4.1.

Programming :: 3D Programming - Difference Between JOGL And C++ OpenGL Programming?

Aug 27, 2010

I am interested in learning 3D programming. The thing is, I would hate to put too much effort to learn something that doesn't have future and is dying. My favorite language at the time is Java. My goal is professional programming.

So I have several questions:
1. Should I learn JOGL or start learning C++ and do C++ openGL programming?
2. Is there a big difference between JOGL and C++ openGL programming?
3. Is it worth to learn openGL? Does it have a future?
4. Is it a big difference between openGL and directX coding?
5. If choosing Java, then JOGL or LWJGL?

Why and what is the main difference between them?

OpenSUSE :: What Exactly Is The Extra Repository /repositories/KDE:/Extra

there are 2 related to 11.3: openSUSE_11.3/ and openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/ Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra they are not listed as official kde4 repos here KDE repositories - openSUSE, but they are in the same directory structure on the build service so it would assume they are official (what ever official means) They have rpm's I didn't see in community and playground (at least for 11.3) such as audex and clementine I would guess that they are for the stable and factory versions of KDE4 but then shouldn't there be a 3rd for unstable if this was the case? Or do they refer to the distro, 11.3 stable and 11.3 factory

Programming :: Unix Programming - Single Thread Server Can Support Exactly 2 Clients At Once

Sep 28, 2010

A simple TCP based chat server could allow users to use any TCP client (telnet, for example) to communicate with each other. For this question you should consider a single process, single thread server that can support exactly 2 clients at once, the server simply forwards whatever is sent from one client to the other (in both directions). Your server must not insist on any specific ordering of messages as soon as something is sent from one client it is immediately forwarded to the other client. As soon as either client terminates the connection the server can exit

Programming :: Choice Of Programming Solutions For Collated Document Repository?

Feb 18, 2011

We have documents on multiple workstations and want to collate them into a single repository to provide text search and download. So far we have implemented rsync to copy files from each workstation under a directory for each workstation on a server (incidentally providing a backup) and have set up text search using Xapian with Omega; users access it via a web browser. Still to do is to set up a system to copy files from each workstation's area on the server to the repository.

Many files are duplicated. In these cases we want to preserve the names but keep a single copy of the file;hard links can be used for that.For each file to be copied from a workstation's area into the collated area we need to check whether it is a duplicate (file size and, if same, MD5 sum) and if so, create a hard link to the original rather than create a copy.A system to detect and replace duplicates in the collated area has been written using ruby and postgresql but the developer cannot commit to continuing this work. It does mean we have a postgresql database populated with "fingerprints" of files in the collated area.My first priority is to get the system working; in the longer term whatever is developed must be maintainable; I do not yet know which language skills are available locally.

I am fluent in bash and competent with awk. Ruby looks nice but I have started to learn python and do think it prudent to learn both at the same time. Python's postgresql capabilities are not settled but may be fine for the simple usage required.What to do? A bash solution would run very slowly but could be developed quickly. Language knowledge aside, I have found it difficult to install ruby on the server (CentOS 5.5;installed rvm but "gem" still not installed; seems a very complex system with its own package management).
