After searching I cant find script that can deal with directories. All the found scripts work file to file and not directory to directory. Someone know script that can deal with all this situation?
View 8 RepliesI am new both here and in Linux. As the subject says, I would like to learn how to copy a directory (not a file) from terminal with progress bar showing. The copy is local, i.e., not to another computer. My distro is CentOS 5.5. I know that if I do it with nautilus I would see the progress, but I want to learn how to do it from the terminal. I know that PV command can show a progress bar, but from what I saw, it works well for files, but not for directories (recursive).
Is it possible to use PV for directories? If yes, could you please show me the syntax? I also saw that some people mentioned that rsync can also show a progress bar, I tried to do it, but it didn't work out - perhaps I got the syntax wrong. If rsync can really be used to copy directories with progress bar, show me the syntax? Any other ideas on how to do it? I would like ideas that do not involve using any script, i.e., just something that I can do using the regular commands.
Is there any good tool in GNU/Linux that copy files like cp, but also shows progress and limits speed (and changes limit without interruption) like pv?
Prototype: find source_directory | cpio -H newc -o | pv -s `du -bs source_directory/ | awk '{print $1}'` | (cd /destination/directory && cpio -di)
Also rsync -aP source_directory /destionation/directory/, but this shows progress bars individually and can't change rate after started. Or may be I should just write a wrapper for pv/cpio? Done.

I compile like this Code: gcc -fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage -o main main.c library.o I run my nice program like that

Ok 98% of the lines were used in main.c, and I get a file with line counts and all that. Great! But, I need to know the coverage in my library too! It says 0.0% and that's impossible. So what can I do? I can't run it like an executable because it's a library.
And why is the terminal not accepting my copy paste? I copy some lines from my IDE, then I want to paste it into the terminal (with ctrl-v of course, not some crazy local application non-standard counter-intuitive key combo made just to cause agony among honest users!), and that could've been the only problem here, but it isn't. I can't even paste with that right click menu. So, if I was crazy before, I went nuts after that. My great "solution" was to paste it into the firefox URL field (not the search field ) and then copy that and paste it into the terminal. Is that common practice for you all while dealing with that unburied DOS-window?
I'm SSHing to a headless Ubuntu box and sometimes need to upload files from that box via FTP. The built-in FTP client does not show the progress of my upload (or at least I don't know how to view it). just installed ubuntu couple of days back on my netbook. I am still a beginner, enjoying my adventure exploring ubuntu. I have another desktop which runs on XP. I am able to access XP shared folders through my netbook(linux). However, i wanted to copy files from XP infact folders using TERMINAL in my netbook, not copy and paste using my mouse. Scp updates the transfer rate every 1 second, and I will like to save the transfer rate at every update. So for example, if the file transfer takes 30 seconds, I would like 30 reports of the transfer rate.

... it does not save the rate at every update, it only shows the final rate.
If I try using typescript by starting "script" ... it's the same deal.
I've got a loop which is able to echo out how complete a process is after each loop (e.g says 25% if the loop has 4 elements and has run once through). Is there any way I can print characters, perhaps a progress bar? I was thinking of using the percentage as a count or something and using.

I'm writing a script to automate rsync backups which so far is working great. I prefer to send output to a text file instead of watching it fly by but the blank output is slightly boring? I would love to use a progress bar. Not for each file but for overall progress. Something like

I am busy writing this script to get a pixel count of a large batch of images in a directory for a research project. To do this I'm using a loop to get all the images in the directory. To make the whole procedure more user friendly for some colleagues I decided to use zenity, something I haven't yet really worked with. As not to make sure that the users don't have to watch to this blank screen during the actual processing of the images I'm trying to get the zenity progress bar working. So far the progress bar comes up but instead of changing over time it stays "empty" till all the images are processed and then becomes 100% when all images are done. What servers my needs for now, but since I am trying to learn more about zenity I was wondering how I could change the script to get the progress bar properly working? Below is the piece of script I am talking about.

I am attempting to "export" the progress bar from wget display using sed. Basically, we have an app that starts wget to download a large file and we want to show a progress bar. Our application has a dbus interface to receive the download progress.
So we were think of a command like:
wget [] | sed [] | dbus-send[]
The problem at the moment is, how do you get the matched string out of sed and into dbus-send? I can get the progress string by:
sed -u 's/[0-9]*%/&/'
This populated '&' with the correct percentage, but I cannot seem to get this out of sed.
i have written a bash script to convert flv files (e.g. videos) to xvid to be played on my dvd player. the conversion is not really the issue, as it works. what i am dealing with now are 2 problems i have not found a good workarouond:
1. surpressing the shell output of mencoder completely ( i do not want to see all the mencoder messages). this i have only solved to a certain extend.
2. i want to create a progress bar. this one i have not yet cracked.

I figured out that apache directories are readonly for a general user. So how do I paste that as a super user? I know about the sudo command but that works only in the terminal. For example, I'd like to (case insensitively) search all subdirectories for files called "cover.jpg", "cover.gif", or "cover.png" and create a copy of these called "thumb.xxx", in the same subdirectory the original is found, with the same extension as the original.

I want to paste that info to this site, but since I'm in the shell, not the terminal (please correct my vocabulary if it's wrong here), I don't know how to copy and paste the output, since right-clicking doesn't give me a menu.
