Programming :: [C] Parsing Lines Into Chunks And Writing Each Chunk?
Sep 10, 2010
My C foo is terrible! I am working with some code which reads lines from a file and then reformats the lines and writes them to a new file.The input lines look like this:
Code:

As a curious side project I'm playing with mzXML data(an xml format for holding mass spec data). A typical scan can be quite large, even up into GB size. I'm wondering how would one go about parsing an xml file in sections, one section at a time. The idea being if the computer doesn't have enough memory to load up the entire data file, work on chunks of it at a time.

In Windows's CMD when you execute a command and then start writing the next one (while still executing the former one) the characters remain in the buffer and they all come up nicely to the new line once the previous command has been executed. In Ubuntu when I do this the newly typed characters annoyingly get in the beginning of the previous command's output lines. I don't really understand why isn't the default method as in Windows's CMD. I mean otherwise almost _everything_ sucks with it when compared to Unix/Linux shells/terminals (commands are longer, syntax is annoying, etc.) So I'd like to know how to do this in both Bash and Zsh.

I have logs files from freeradius that have looks as follows:
$ grep "Login incorrect (rlm_ldap: User not found" /var/log/radius/radiusd-inner-tunnel-20090831.log
Mon Aug 31 09:25:27 2009 : Auth: Login incorrect (rlm_ldap: User not found): [John Doe] (from client oficina port 0 via TLS tunnel)
[code]....
I use the following line to get the amount of users that don't exist on ldap:
Code:
grep "Login incorrect (rlm_ldap: User not found" /var/log/radius/radiusd-inner-tunnel-20090831.log | awk '{print $14}' | sort -fu | wc -l
Now, awk on line one for example parses [John Doe] and [Joon Williams] as "[John" and that it's not what I'd want. I mean how could I do for awk looks username field as closed between squared brackets?

I have a log file (test.log) starting & ending within dash (--) as below. I am looking to write a parser for test.log. This test.log file currently has single value for one Job ID but I wish to parse for repeated N values of different Job ID - Job, User, Queue, Dispatched Date, Dispatched Time, Completed Date, Completed Time, Hosts/Processor, CPU_T and TURNAROUND. I can either output this 10 values in another .log file or dump into cgi.
The selected parameters from test.log for parsing with above 10 attributes are -

Job <345010>
User <xyz>
Queue <gaussian>

I have a variable in which the data is stored as below:
variable_test=0m0.001s 0m0.001s 0m0.001s 0m0.001s 0m0.001s 0m0.001s .....an so on.
There are lots of values in format like "3m1.057s" are stored in variable_test separated with an space between two such values. For exapmple, value is "3m1.057s" I need to save different parts of a value in three separate array variables such as the
var_hour=3
var_min=1
var_sec= 057
tell if this can be done using "awk". A "WHILE" loop might be used to separate and store theses values I guess?

I'm trying to recreate a simple script I wrote to parse out the access.log to get a rough idea of websites that users are going to on our corp network. The issue I'm having is I want to pull out any line from access.log that ends in .com/ .org/ .net/ or whatever to only see what the user entered into the address bar and drop pictures, js's and everything else and log only this. so what I do is :awk '{print $8} | grep -e '[cong]|[ore]|[mgtv][/]'$ and nothing happens.I know there is an easier way to do this with awk alone,

I've searched online and found many examples using getopts, but nothing that clearly explains it use, nor any examples of what I'm trying to do. I have a script named "process". It can take from 0 to 3 different options. I'd like to be able to handle these options regardless of the order that they are entered.
Syntax:
process [-v] [-d #] [-h|-?] [string]
-v = verbose mode on
-d # = how deep to do the process, expecting a number parameter
-h or -? = show command usage
string = only process lines containing the specified string

I am trying to send text data from one PC to other using Serial cable. One of the PC is running linux and I am sending data from it using write(2) system call. The log size is approx 65K bytes but the write(2) system call returns some 4K bytes (i.e. this much amount of data is getting transferred). I tried breaking the data in chunks of 4K but write(2) returns -1.My question is that "Is there any buffer limit for writing data on serial port? or can I send data of any size?. Also do I need to continously read data from other PC as I write 4K chunk of data"Do I need to do any special configuration in termios structure for sending (huge) data?

I have a bash variable where the content looks like this where ;f1; and ;f2; are delimiters:
;f1;field1value1;f2;field2 value1 ;f1;field1value2;f2;field2 value2 ;f1;field1value3;f2;field2 value3
So what I need is to extract and put into variables each combination of f1 and f2 in a loop to something like that:
#first pass of the loop I need:
f1=field1value1
f2=field2 value1
#second pass of the loop I need:
f1=field1value2
f2=field2 value2
# third pass of the loop I need:
f1=field1value3
f2=field2 value3

PI'm trying to write a script to list all open ports in the MINIUNPND chain in iptables and use the procotol, port and destination ip to open ports on another router using upnpc.Here is the output of iptables -L MINIUPNPD
Code:
>iptables -L MINIUPNPD
Chain MINIUPNPD (1 references)
target prot opt source destination
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere 192.168.3.124 tcp dpt:19955
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere 192.168.3.124 tcp dpt:20054
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere 192.168.3.130 udp dpt:10654
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere 192.168.3.121 tcp dpt:29955
code....
No matter what i do i cant seem to remove the first 4 characters from the MYPROT array to leave only the digits. Also i cant seem to read the array back???
I thought it would simply be a loop reading each line and passing the fields in variables, executing upnpc commands i need then moving to the next line of the file until it reached the EOF.

I am going to write a TCP server program using c. Can anyone give me some advices on whats and what not to do specially when using select?
There would be a lot of data to be transferred both on the server and back to the client. I already have a simple server here but the server uses a lot of resources. Maybe 3 to 4 connections and the server's load would rise to unacceptable levels.
Which do you think is better to use fork or select?

I want to write some PHP for a website that'll have the data that the script will generate written inside a table with thin black line around it, much like LQ itself. My problem is: how do I draw the box that the text will be inside of, since the amount of text will vary - if I have a GIF with a picture of a box, that'll be of a fixed length, and my script can then only generate that much text, for it to look nice. Or do I need to fiddle with the GD library to get done what I want?

So basically, there is a really cool writing system I have been working on. It could be viewed (for simplification purposes) like an encryption method for the Latin script.
Facts about the writing system:
It has a little over 300 symbols.
It is syllable-driven.
It is highly compositional (eg. "c", "ca", "cae", "ca " and "ci." all map to different symbols - and NOT by overlaying elements)
Symbols have medium graphical complexity (comparable to Korean Hangul, or Japanese Hiragana)
Has a rather complex set of diacritics (~10, some of which can go on any symbol)
Has no ligatures
How transliteration occurs:
Sequences of Latin symbols map to certain symbols. Example below:[G][rou][p ][hu][g.]Characters sequences between "[" and "]" map to a single symbol (so it would take only 5 symbols to write "Group hug.").
How I want it to work:
I would like to have a daemon that: Intercepts all text displayed on the screen.
Converts it to my writing system (changes letter sequences with individual Unicode codes)
Leaves unsupported symbols unchanged.
Displays all the text on the screen using my font and characters intertwined with the fonts and characters left unchanged.
For example, if you take the following line of C++ code:for (i = 1; i <= n; i++)
I would like it displayed like this:[fo][r ]([i ]= [1]; [i ]<= [n]; [i]++)
Bold-symbols should be in my Unicode font with special symbols defined for this writing system, and the rest should be in its original font and encoding. Also, I would like this encoding to hold for display-purposes only. The data in the memory should remain unaffected. This also means real-time adjustments: if I open a text editor (say, from the OpenOffice Suite) and I start typing, I would like to see what I type encoded with my writing system, even though the document actually contains Latin letters. This also means that the symbol immediately before the cursor may change as you type.

I have written a daemon server. I would like to add the ability for the daemon to update itself. That is, it should be able to download the latest version of the code (when it receives a signal from a client) and then restart itself. I am stuck on getting the daemon to restart itself. The problem is killing the old daemon without killing the process that is starting the new daemon. In my latest attempt, the daemon that is updating itself runs a program in a subshell (using system) that starts a restarter daemon that runs the original daemon (again using system) with the restart command option. With the restart option, the new version of the daemon sends a terminate signal to the old version. Obviously, when I run the original daemon manually with the restart option, it restarts reliably. I figured that issuing the same restart command from a daemon would adequately isolate the process doing the restarting from the program being restarted. Using ps, I can see that the daemon does actually restart. However, the client locks. In fact, a few times, the OS locked and I had to reset.
