OpenSUSE :: Diabling Screen Saver While Streaming Video

Jun 29, 2011

I'm wondering if there is a method for leaving the screen saver set to appear after, say 4 minutes, but to NOT have the screen saver activate during a streamed video. For example, any time I wish to stream a video through Firefox, I must open screen saver settings and deactivate. I was wondering if there is some way to maybe lower the priority for the screen saver below Firefox or Flash player, etc. Or if there is another work-around that is simpler than monkeying with the settings every time.

I haven't noticed this problem when using media players to mount local files, such as vlc. I'm running 64-bit KDE 4.6.4 Tumbleweed (from 11.4), FIrefox 4.0.1, Linux 2.6.39.1-33-desktop x86_64. Last 'zypper dup' was done yesterday, 6/28. Sorry if I forgot any important info.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Low Level Power Management Screen Saver Removal

May 28, 2010

I run V11.1 on a minimalised install on a stick with TWM, no KDE at all but I cant get rid of the screen shutdown after about 20 minutes. Also I have several other boxes with v11.1 with KDE and still cant get rid of these screen shut downs.I dont believe this is coming from the bios in these machines. they are all Intel D945 MBs with some sort of Nvidea cards.

My app normal runs with no user mouse or input and is pocessor intensive.I would like to retain the power shutdown and reboot capability from comand line.I realise its not as simple as pulling symlinks of of the init levels in the new complicated distros, but I was suprised the non kde twm install still shuts down the screen. So I want a low level level fix that will remove anything kicked off by init that will derate the system performance or turn off the screen.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Logging Out Of The Xserver Without Warning After Screen Saver Mode Or Lid Closed

Oct 8, 2010

One very specific issue regarding KDE in OpenSuse 11.3

- when I close the lid of my laptop or get into a screen saver mode, sometimes when the xserver comes back to life it basically goes back to the KDE login menu (log out) without any warning...

I have looked at the detailed settings and power performance management but nothing there.... I am in fact in "don't do anything" mode (power management) but this does not seem to do much.

OpenSUSE :: Stopping The Screen Saver And Stopping The Screen Locking?

Jan 23, 2011

In December I finally filled up my root partition and broke Suse 11.1. I therefore resized my partitions and installed Suse 11.3 on /root. I didn't not touch my /home partition.

I notice that when I leave my machine and come back the screen has locked. I have tried to turn off the screensaver, but it hasn't worked. I have Googled, but unfortunately the screen shots don't look like what I have and the instructions to stop this do not seem to match what I am seeing on the screen.

Is there a way to do this via the command line?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3: "screen Saver" Locks Session Even Though Disabled?

Aug 19, 2010

On my 11.3 desktop I was annoyed by what I thought was the screen saver locking my session after an idle period, requiring my password to unlock. Well, I didn't want this behaviour and it wasn't supposed to do that, I had disabled every place in the desktop configuration that seemed to be related. I even looked into the KDE4 rc files with a text editor and they all seemed to be in order.

Eventually after some searching I found the answer: It's the setting "lock screen on resume" in the advanced settings > power daemon. Once I turned it off, it was fine; this desktop doesn't need suspend+resume anyway.

It seems that this is not a case of counterintuitive naming; it seems that in some configurations there is a bug where a stray event can trigger a screen lock by the powersaved (?). I don't really understand it, but you can start your investigation here if you are interested:

Software :: Using Windows Screen Savers - Using .scr Screen Saver Files

Dec 22, 2008

I've been a Linux user for years but just recently I decided to take the plunge and use Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS (with Windows on the side for any games that don't run well in CrossOver Games).

Anyway, one thing I was curious about was whether or not I could get some of my Windows screen savers to work on Linux. Specifically I had been using "Blue Screen", a cute little ss made by SysInternals that emulates various versions of Windows BSODs.

The file comes as a .scr file (like all Windows screen savers). I wanted to know if there was any program that converted .scr files into Linux compatable screen savers. If not, that's still OK as I've now been rocking "Electric Sheep"!

I'm running Ubuntu Linux 8.10 on a HP DV9000 with an 1.7GHz Intel Centrino Duo processor, 2GB ram, and an nVidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card.

Slackware :: KDE 4.4.5 - No Lock Screen - No Screen Saver

Aug 23, 2010

What happens is that I resorted to deleting my .kde directory after my kid destroyed my profile where title bar, menu, konsole get broken. After deleting, I login again thus regenerating the .kde directory. To avoid my kid from messing my desktop, I tried to lock it. It does not lock.

It just need a KDE full restart perhaps since when I login the other day, it now works.

I'm updated to Slackware current for almost a month already and have not played a lot on KDE desktop (busy programming stuff).

However, on day I tried to lock the desktop in KDE to avoid the kid from destroying my cool desktop setting, but it didn't lock. Cool, so I tried screen saver and add an option to lock the screen.

When I test screen saver, it displays. But when I wait for 1 minute(I set it that way), it doesn't fire up. Not even after 15 minutes which I think the default.

It usually work before (several months ago) using the lower version of KDE. It is just last Saturday that I noticed it.

I tried to dig the profile management but I could not find anything relevant there.

Ubuntu :: Can't Disable Screen Saver

Jun 30, 2010

I have been having a problem with every Ubuntu version I have used where the screen blanks automatically after a few minutes when the computer is left alone.I have set all the settings in the system BIOS and power management settings to disable screen saving features. The screen saver options are set to the following: Pictures Folder, Idle after 2 hours, Activate when Idle unchecked.Require password is checked.

These are my settings, but in about 10 minutes of not being touched, each computer goes to a blank screen and I have to use my password to get back to the desktop.I originally installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my desktop, and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on one of my laptop computers. I have sense upgraded the desktop to 9.10 and then to 10.04.I updated the first laptop to 10.04 and freshly installed 10.04 onto another laptop.I am having this same problem on all three computers and had the problem on each computer from the beginning.I ran update manager today about an hour ago and have not tested this problem, but I expect it is still there. I created a document with nothing but the time and left it on the laptop. I will see how long it takes for the screen blanker to activate.I searched the forum and found two unrelated problems, one of which was the opposite, someone who could not get the screen saver to activate.

Ubuntu :: Screen Saver Not Working?

Jan 7, 2011

I have no GNOME Panels on my desktop. I stopped gnome-panel from booting altogether by going into the configuration editoring to "/desktop/gnome/session/required_components" changing the panel key to "gnome-panel(Orig)" so that the command just errors out. Then adding a key in that same path the key is a string "avant-window-navigator". Since I've done this the screensaver doesn't come up. Also pidgin never goes idle. Both are set to hit at thirty minutes but have not hit in almost a day. I thought the mouse might be moving slowly or something butunplugged it and let it sit for almost an hour and nothing. Also at that time I had a VirtualBox with Windows XP in it and that screensaver hit no problem

Software :: Transparent Screen Saver ?

Jun 24, 2009

Windows has it, so should Linux: A Transparent Screensaver. It sounds like an oxymoron, but it's a truly useful concept. An example would be a NOC environment where there is a need to display content on overhead screens. To display the content, they have to be logged in to have access to certain resources such as web browsers, or client applications to display the data.

It is insecure to leave these machines logged in, even in a controlled environment. What is needed is a transparent screensaver that can lock the terminal to prevent unauthorized use, but still display the entire screen. The screensaver would display a dialog box to enter the user credentials upon mouse movement or keyboard activity. If no credentials were presented, the dialog would disappear.
