OpenSUSE Network :: 11.2 - Configure DNS For Domain
Aug 5, 2010
I am using opensuse 11.2 with a server that has a static ip from my isp and the ip is working. I have tried with an old domain but I cannot try anymore with it. I have installed yast dns server and configured it normally. When I will buy a new domain i will asign those nameserver(s) to ns(x).domain.com with my ip address.
When the changes will take effect at the registrar it will point to my dns server. I have added two forwarders to my isp domain name servers and a zone with mydomain.com and for testing I don't have firewall. The dns server is started at boot time. That's all that is required to be done? I have to set other things before I buy the domain?

I was wondering if there is any way to enable an MS Windows client that is otherwise unable of joining a domain to join a domain controlled by (open)SUSE? Is that inability only for joining a Windows based domain but a client that runs XP Home Edition or similar domain- incapable version of Windows could join a domain if it was controlled by Linux?Pardon my newbie style, but answer doesn't have to be detailed step-by-step, just yes/no answer with some pointers would do. I am not new to linux but new to network services... search engines weren't friendly when asked this question at the search bar...

In short: browsing the internet with domain names does not work. The long version: I've configured my network with DHCP and ifup. Ping works on my internal net and with servers in the internet. Dig work's too! I get the right IP to the requested domain. When i try to access the internet using firefox or even wget i get an DNS error. For example wget is showing the following error: Resolving heise.de... failed: Name or service not known. wget: unable to resolve host address 'heise.de'
Again dig show me the right IP and if i add the entry to /etc/hosts it work's too! I've even tried it with manually setup of ip address, nameserver and default gateway but with the same result. Switching off the firewall has no effect on this problem, too.

I'm trying to set up an openSUSE 11.2 host as NIS client and I would like to knowwhether or not it can be client of two (or more) NIS domains. The reason is thatsome users are authenticated on server1 (nis-domain1) and some others on server2(nis-domain2).Trawling the web, I found a HP document stating that a client can belong to one NIS domain only. However, the yast NIS client interface allows adding NIS domains/servers to the seemingly default one. I'm totally confused.I made the following experiment:1. declaring nis-domain1 in /etc/defaultdomain and server1 in /etc/yp.conf: ypwhich returns server1, ypcat passwd lists the users on server1.2. in the yast interface, I added nis-domain2 and server2; in /etc/yp.conf, there is an extra line "domain nis-domain2 server server2". After reboot, ypwhichreturns server2, ypcat passwd lists the users on server2. But now the maps from server1 are no longer available.

I'm trying in the company where I work to persuade my co-partners to move slowly into the world of linux, but because everything are set up on Windows is quite difficult. Though I can install at least in one PC openSuse or Ubuntu (I prefer openSuse), but the problem is that I have to find a way to make the authentication to a Windows Domain, which is running Windows Server 2003.
How is this possible? Is this procedure painless or I have to read a lot of staffs in order to make it work? I would be obliged if you could give me some steps on how to do it. I can't stand windows any more

I have sucessfully joined my machine to Windows Active Directory (it wasn't all that complicated ). I was wondering where the uid information for users that login is located and managed? The reason I ask is because we are going to set up a separate NFS server and NFS relies on the uids of the users. I know there are numerous ways I can view the uid for a user (through the use of the id <username> command, do an ls on the /home directory displaying the uid instead of the translated name, etc), but is there a way to have this readily available (almost as the /etc/passwd file is)?

I have the following problem: I can't authorize with my central WinNT 4.0 domain controller. I set up all parameters in YaST, but still can't see any shares or get inet access.I am using gnome and it shows several windows workgroups. While I am trying to open it, gnome shows a window to request my login credentials. I am setting up all thing right and then it shows it again. I tried smbclient utility to login, but still can't login. What can I do about it?Also I have some problems with my http proxy: suse doesn't sent it my login/password while I can easily work with proxy, that doesn't request it

At home I am using a Windows Server 2003 as Domain controller with Active Directory. My "client" computers are all currently running Windows XP. They all require CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and the user to enter their credentials before they will allow logon. Shared files reside on various other Server 2003 machines and have restrictions on so only specific users can access certain resources.
For example, I have the family finances and other important documents in a share named 'Private-Files', only members of the 'PrivateFiles' global group have access. Likewise, I have my movies sorted into their appropriate age categories - after all, I don't want my 5 year old son accidentally watching Aliens! So this all works but as you can imagine, the copies of Windows XP and Server 2003 are far from legitimate. I want to go legal and the only real way I can afford to do this is to switch over to Linux.
I have used Suse, Ubuntu, Fedora and a few other distros in the past and found that for ease of use, I want to use Ubuntu on the desktop computers but power the servers with Open Suse. The problem is, although I can install the OSes, I have no idea where to proceed from there - for example, how do I create a Domain in Suse? Where and how do I create domain users and groups? How do I set permissions on shares for the domain users?

Im new in this world of linux and suse. I have just installed the opensuse 11.2 in a Dell Inspiron 5160. Such laptop has a BCM4306 Wireless LAN controller. When I tried to configure a wlan connection, I found that the firmware was not installed. After looking in different forums, I installed the firmware b43. Now, my wlan card is abled to find the wireless of my router.
I have tried to configure a connection with YAST as well as with Network Manager, but both cases failled. Specifically, when I use Network manager, Im able to see in the applet my connection, how strong is the signal, but I see a yellow symbol (in one forum, such a box is shown with a green symbol).
I have check many time all about the secutity, encryption, and so one and all seems to be correct. But when I open the mozila firefox or the konqueror browser, no chance to surffer in internet. Now Im just a step to become crazy. The drivers are ok, the information about the router and the keys are ok, but in such a way, I am still harmloss.

I'm going to come right out and say I am a complete novice with Linux/SUSE. The equipment I'm having a problem with is a little web-server that was purchased by my employer that has, quite suddenly, stopped functioning. I was changing the IP address within YaST, at which point the device offered to update itself, which I saw no harm in. Post-update, however, I was unable to so much as ping the device.
I tried "ifconfig eth0": "Error fetching interface information: Device not found." I went into network settings via YaST and found that there are two cards now listed as: RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller Both IP addresses are "Not configured". The information pane, for both cards, cites:
RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controllerBusID : 0000:02:00.0 Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details. The only difference in either of the cards is the BusID (0000:02:00.0 and 0000:03.00.0)
I can neither edit nor delete either of these cards. As I mentioned, I am a total Linux novice, and am at a total loss for what to do next, or even how to find critical information about the system itself. I know enough to check dmesg, but not enough to have any clue what to look for in the output.

I installed 11.2 a couple weeks ago on a machine at work, and thru YaST connected to the domain. I was then able to add a printer, and thru nautilis browse to windows computers with shares. Something changed about a week ago and I've played with everything I can think of, read lots of tutorials, and still can't make it work. I'm about ready to format and reinstall from scratch and try again, as I'm out of ideas.
So the way it was before, in nautilus if I clicked on network it would give me a list of all sorts of computers on my domain, and if I clicked on one of the windows machines it would ask me my username/password, and after I entered them, I'd be in.
Now, in nautlis if I click on network it shows me "windows network" and if I click on that it gives me a list of all sorts of workgroups and domains (or something like that). If I click on the one with my domain name, it asks username/password but it doesnt work.
I've tried leaving the domain and rejoining, I've enabled and disabled kerberos, ldap, samba, everything I can think of - although I dont think I had to change those at all from default the first time.
I dont know what I could have done between when it worked and now. I did allow some installation of updates. Shortly thereafter I noticed ssh no longer worked, and after playing with it forever I couldnt make it work, I uninstalled openssh and then reinstalled it from the repository, and it worked again. No idea why it stopped working, but maybe it's related to this domain problem, I dunno.
My main goal at this time is to be able to access windows shares from the linux machine. I don't care if I have to login to linux with my windows domain account or a local account (although all the documentation I've followed said that I should be able to login with a domain username/password too).

For yast, my Suse is joined but i'm unable to authenticate, i can't see "MYDOMAIN.LOCAL" at KDM login and if i try to lookup forest i have this error:
Code:
wbinfo -u
Error looking up domain users
but i'm able to retrive ticket via kinit
Code:

have you a samba version tested against Active Directory 2008? can you link me the repository or help me to solve this?

I'm trying to replace a 2k3 server with openSUSE. So far I was able to get working DHCP, DNS, SQUID and SAMBA with LDAP backend.Samba works ok login users and creating home and profile folders but somehow only the Domain Admin (administrator) account will automatically save the profile. The administrator account belongs to the ntadmins group while the rest of the users belong to ntusers group.
When I change a common user from ntusers group to ntadmins the profile will save without problem. If I change it back to it's original group the profile will be read but not updated on log off.Folder permissions seems to be ok. The network share (\pdcprofiles.msprofile aka Z is being connected with no problem and all users can read and write from and to it.

I have bought a new USB modem from my service provider. The model they provided is "Huawei EC1260" Huawei Terminal. As usual the official support is for windows and mac.
I tried to install this device using two methods..
1) Set knetworkmanager settings to "traditional with ifup". Then in wireless setup there is a choice of having "usb" (A tick box). I selected that, and setup completed successfully but the knetworkmanager was not up(I did ifdown wlan0 (wlan0 was the wireless config name), ifup wlan0 and the rcnetwork restart.)
2) Again knetworkmanager was set to "traditional method with ifup. This times while adding the connection I specifically selected the type "USB", then clicked to finish the configuration. The configuration finished without any errors but when I checked the Network Configuration screen no USB device was added there.
Are there any specific steps to configure a USB modem

I have been working on this for about 4 hours so I am extremely frustrated. I am trying to access windows shares from my linux box. I will worry about getting my own data shared afterwards.
I was having the authentication problem described by swerdna's sticky, and it was solved by the upgrade. However apparently that is not the main problem. samba is trying to use my ISP's DNS to resolve the internal network names. I have a vague conceptual understanding of WINS and NetBIOS - but Windows does this without any extra steps. Do I need to configure my machine to also act as a WINS? how do I do that? In my searches I found a thread about "why do windows to linux users give up?" this is why.

I would like to know how to configure a pppoe connexion? I am testing version 11.2 on live cd but I can't manage to connect my laptop. I used the "green plug software", I filled all the blanks (I am not a total beginner because I have been using Mandriva for a year) but afterwards I can't select pppoe instead of eth0 What should I do?
I read on this forum NET INSTALL PPPOE - Alionet, communaut francophone d'entraide openSUSE et SUSE Linux that the only reason that I can't configure a pppoe connexion is because I am using a live version of 11.2 as result that it only recognizes an ethernet connexion and a modem (everything I said, is said in the forum I linked, but you'll have to read it in french )
I try to configure a pppoe connexion to Tl2, my internet connexion provider. I live in France. My modem is a Bewan ADSL ethernet 100, no need to configure it.

I have a Zoom 2920 internal hardware modem that worked well with Suse 10.0. In Suse 11.3 the modem config. overview lists 2 modems for this one board; #1- AT Modem and #2- Venus Modem (v90, 56K Flex). With #1 "edit" brings up modem parameters and the modem device line is blank. With #2 the device line shows /dev/ttys4.
When the provider parameters are entered, for either #1 or #2, the modem overview continues to list them as not configured but a third line "modem 0" is configured with the provider information at /dev/ttys4. The modem will not function.

I need some help install and configure my vnc session at my Opensuse.
Right now I have installed nx client which works fine and is listening on port 5901.
I also want vnc to use when I want to check exactly what is going on my work's computer (when I go home)
I am reading the tutorial here:
And I would like to ask you the following
1.
Code:
For VNC client connection remember to open ports 5901-> in the firewall. (1 port/Xsession.) nxserver is listening to 5901. How to configure vnc to listen to 5902.
2. The guide also refers that
Code:
Here we "Prestart" vnc sessions for specific users, therefore no login screen is presented. This uses more resources as the VNC Session is running even when no client is connected to the session watching it. But there in lies it's advantage, "watching a session" and "using a session" are not the same thing! This method is very usefull for starting long running programs before going home. Once home you can re-connect to the session and see how things are going.

I'm looking forward to the release of openSUSE 11.4, which I'm looking to install as an Internet facing gateway on a mini-ITX machine with 2 Ethernet cards. As such I've been reading up on the YaST Firewall trying to find out to configure it, and there's one thing I'd like to be able to do: 'stealth' all the firewall ports.
In other words, if someone were to hypothetically do a port scan of my external IP address, I would rather they not know whether any of the ports on my gateway are open or closed, so instead of replying with the status of those ports the packets get dropped. I've been able to do this with a product called Astaro Security Gateway, which I currently have installed on a second hand Dell Optiplex machine, but I am now looking into the possibility of installing this as a virtual machine inside an openSUSE 11.4 host (extra level of security) and would like the same functionality for the host OS.
