OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound With CERN LHC Videos
Oct 23, 2010
I cannot get any sound from the Flash videos available from the CERN LHC site.I followed again the various steps in the sticky from "Oldcpu" which helped me get sound working from other sources and I do not have any trouble with sound from BBC iPlayer which I thought was Flash also. I assume there is sound from CERN as there is a volume control shown on the player.

After a fresh installation of 11.3 KDE, I followed the Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide and I also used the mmcheck to follow every advice and install packages that were recommended.I also spent a few evening this week digging everywhere I could to get sound when playing videos in Firefox without any success. I have the Shockwave Flash 10.1 r102 extension installed in Firefox. I also tested in Chrome that also had the flash plugin and I still had no sound.

Using 11.2. Sound configuration tools have no effect. would suspect a hardware problem except that system notifications work. Also amarok is the only app that can play mp3's. Dvd's and videos have no sound. What can I do. Sound worked perfectlty in 11.0.

If I try playing ..... or other streaming video I have no sound. It used to work and then my dumbA$$ tinkered with it and now I have restored Flash, which was working flawlessly, don't know where my head was at but it was dark and smelly.
EDIT: I have Ubuntu 9.10 and my sound card is an nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2). I tried to follow along with the instructions in the sticky regarding the
Quote:
Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide
but when it gave me the instruction to select my sound card manufacturer from the drop down menu, I never found it.
FWIW, my speaker are on and they play music, system sounds etc, just no sound for streaming video. Pandora works fine etc. Also, this is isolated to Firefox, as it works fine in Opera.

This is true for .flv, .avi, .mov, and .mp4, at least. This is true in both vlc and movie player. Thumbnails generated from frames in the videos appear correctly in nautilus. Videos play fine in firefox, on ....., but I downloaded one as an .flv and then it had the same problem. I have restricted extras freshly installed. My "Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala" system is fully updated. I've found several other forum posts about the same kind of problem, but I couldn't find anything helpful in them (like that the contrast setting might be WAY out of whack, which it wasn't, or that nvidia drivers needed to be updated or reinstalled, which I don't have anyway, etc).

I just built a new system and installed Kubuntu. I'm having some sound problems, but they are very strange.First sound worked fine out of the box, played a DVD fine, flash video, fine. The only trouble I was having was some static/interference which I assume is from the onboard sound not being the bestThen I went to play a flash video, and I got no sound, just some slight static (from the onboard sound?)ayed a DVD - no soundRestarted, Kubuntu played its opening tune, I heard it, but STILL no DVD sound or flash video sound.Emptying recycle bin sound ok.I played an mp3, music plays fine.
So I figured I'd figure it out later and went to go do something else. Later in the day I opened a flash game, and THERE WAS SOUND. Weird. Opened a DVD, sound. Flash video, sound.Yay! It fixed itself!Later on, I go to play another flash video (after not using anything with sound at all for a bit) and I don't get any sound again! Opened DVD,no soundBut I opened a song and I have sound there still. Kubuntu still plays a sound when loading KDE and emptying the recycle bin.It hasn't moved itself from the no sound stage again yet. I installed about 24 hours ago.

I recently upgraded my Dell laptop from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 and everything seems to be working ok, except that when playing Flash videos in Firefox, I don't hear any sound. Sound works for the system, as I can play videos and music via VLC just fine.

I haven't installed or changed my system in anyway apart from the usual updates and all was fine until about a week ago. I can play videos back through any of the native linux players VLC, Movie player - But I only get black screen with sound - it was working fine and then suddenly - boink? The only program that can play back sound and video now is avidemux
I purged VLC - but I already knew it wouldn't fix it - since it was system wide So I installed VLC through winetricks to check and guess what - it works - all formats Anyone know what the problem could be? or more importantly how to fix it?

I was having problems with pulseaudio, which I eventually cleared up. Now sound works on everything except flash videos and games. I have tried to reinstall adobe-flashplugin in synaptic, but I get this:
E: adobe-flashplugin: subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 2
When I try to remove Adobe Flash Plugin 10 in Ubuntu Software Center, I get this:

I primarily use Opera, but flash videos do not work in either Opera or Firefox.

I am having problems: videos have sound, but no picture.I'm using a Gigabyte motherboard with integrated ATI video, and I've read before that XBMC (and Ubuntu in general) don't like ATI too much. Is there any hope left to make XBMC work?I've tried the following:1. Fresh Ubuntu installation, default ATI drivers. Result: when starting a video, audio is okay, but no video. Also, visibly slow graphics even while navigating XBMC menus
2. Installed ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX driver via System->Hardware drivers. Result: significantly accelerated menu navigation, but no video still. Note: having no problems watching videos via VLC or Totem Movie Player (after downloading proper codecs)3. Fresh Ubuntu installation, then downloaded and installed ATI's proprietary Linux drivers from ATI's site (ati-driver-installer-10-7-x86.x86_64.run). Result: yippee, I see some video, but wait: no color!! (all videos are in sepia-like mode)
4. Followed these instructions to install the unofficial ATI drivers. Result: total failure, XBMC won't even start, says something about the need to have proper hardware OpenGL acceleration.System info:GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AM3 AMD 785G mobo with ATI Radeon HD 4200 onboard graphicsAMD Phenom II X2 550 processor4 gigs of DDR3 RAM Ubuntu Lucid 32 bit (2.6.32-24-generic-pae)

I'm testing a rather old motherboard (PC-Chips A31G) with both Ubutu Karmic and Lucid, everything seems to work fine but video playing.
I tried flv, mp4 and mpg with both mplayer and totem, but I can only get sound with no video, well, not a black screen but a deformed image (I don't attach an image because every attempt to capture the screen gets a black or transparent video).
I already installed ubuntu-restricted-extras package witho no luck.
What I don't understand is that, if I switch to another motherboard (using the same HDD), everything works perfect. I guess it's a problem with the motherboard's video chipset, but would like to confirm this and know whether there is a solution.
I attach lspci output for the A31G motherboard.

running kubuntu 9.10 karmic koala, and my sound settings -at first glance- seem to be in order... a strange thing is occurring, is my machine haunted? my sound works when:
a. the machine boots up
b. files are played in dragon player
c. the machine shuts down
my sound does not work when:
1. i try to play streaming flash videos online (e.g. videos videos show the image but no sound will play)
2. the same goes for vlc media player: images yes, sound no.
3. i use skype *edit: additional problem*
i made no changes, that i know of, to my machine before this started happening. one day everything was working fine and i turned off my machine to go to sleep. the next day, i turn on my machine, and surprise, the sound doesn't work in some instances.

I just got my hands on an MSI E7235-295US and slapped Ubuntu 9.10 on it. So far everything's worked great, but I am beginning to get a bit concerned about my sound quality. The laptop itself has 5 speakers + subwoofer so I should be getting 5.1 sound, if I understand things correctly (the newegg link should provide more details) and when I play anything (music, flash, videos, games, etc...) the sound comes out 'muffled'. Almost as if it is in a concert hall, maybe. I initially wondered if the problem is related to the 5 speakers and if the sound is initially only setup for two. If that is the case, nothing I've done has seemed to made any real difference. I've tried changing the master/pci channels, but it only hides it a little, and doesn't solve the problem.
This seemed to be on the right track, but the laptop is still really new and not listed in the alsa file.

After installing all the codecs etc for restricted formats as well as the ATI video card drivers all videos appear very blue. I cannot seem to find anything on here or on the net that would suggest a work around.
This only seems to be the case in VLC, others seem to be OK.

I can't play any of my avi, mp4 or even ogv files.I get audio but no video. This sort of points to a missing codec, but when I go into YaST I already appear to have the necessary ones (doesn't openSuse come with most out of the box anyway?).The file I am currently most interested in is (I believe) an Xvid.I already had libxvid4 but added xvidcore when it didn't work but this didn't help.I have packman in the repos (does it come by default in 11.3?)I installed vlc-qt to see if I could play it with VLC instead of Kaffeine but that didn't help either.

After updating the repositories, a long update took place... and after completed, my sound card was disabled. I had to reboot the system to have it working again, yet... mp3, mp4, avi files cannot be reproduced at all.
I just want to get rid of Win 7... and I find OpenSuse very stable, solid and friendly. I just installed version 11.2 in this old Toshiba Satellite, as a pilot installation prior the final one in a desktop PC.

Whatever i try to play a .avi or play a Flash movie the movie does that... by the way the sound does the same thing. Followed the Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide Used the MMCHECK - Check Your Multimedia in 10 Steps - Script File, as proposed by RedDwarf and Googled and found this: [URL] but it does not help me because I already run opensuse 11.3 with a 2.6.34-12 kernel My Laptop with the Problem:

openSUSE 11.2 with KDE desktop, I have been using vlc to play .flv files without any difficulty or problems for months but it has suddenly stopped giving me any image on screen. The video is "running" according to progress bar and there is sound but just a black screen. Trouble is I cannot pin this down to any particular update so I am asking if anybody else has had this happen? I have run 1 click install multimedia and there were a few files updated but still no picture. I shall have to go through all the multimedia chacks and no time right now.

I've been playing around with the latest RC of 11.4. Overall, it works great, but just have 1 issue. No flash videos have audio. Video works just fine. I've tried installing both the flash-player package so that it loads the official 32-bit plugin through ndiswrapper, and tried downloading the Adobe Square 64-bit plugin and installing it. Doesn't make a difference, either way I have working video but not audio. Audio itself on the laptop works with no issues, I listen to Amarok all the time on it. Laptop in question is a Dell Latitude E5500. I've also had Debian Wheezy and Kubuntu 10.10 on here, both had no issues.

I have been using parts of the MRG (kernel-rt, qpid[dc]) package for some time; thanks to Johnny Hughes (hughesjr) for providing the initial binaries. Recently, I discovered that CERN builds MRG for their ScientificLinux distribution, which is a derivative of CentOS.
You can view the package list from their repoview or browse all the packages they support here. I have found these packages to be compatible w/ CentOS. Perhaps something can be done to leverage this work to make MRG available as part of CentOS?It's straight forward to setup a .repo file to pull MRG directly via yum, including updates.

Today while watching a video on my PC I noticed some white sparkles or spots appearing at the dark/blackish areas of the video.
The first thing that came to my mind was that the video may be corrupted so I tried another one. But the same thing happened with it too.
Then I changed the video driver of Smplayer from vdpau to xv but the same thing.
Then I tried playing those videos with vlc but those white things appeared there as well.
Here is an example of the problem. I have circled the areas with green.
I am using
openSUSE 11.4 Gnome 64 Bit
XFX Nvidia 9500 GT
Nvidia Proprietary Driver Ver. :260.19.44
