The *.dbf files (DBase III Plus files) have a header (metadata) and follow with n fixed records. I'd like to make a directory entry (like a symbolic link) that point to the fixed record area into a .dbf file. Is it possible in linux? The request is motivated by access a .dbf file from a Firebird SQL Database using CREATE TABLE EXTERNAL FILE '/tmp/mydbf.dbf' ( ... ); but this command only works on fixed records.

I am having a problem since upgrading from OPENSuSE 11.2 to 11.4 (both 64bit). The problem goes back to some issue with repositories which is what "forced" me into an 11.4 upgrade.
So, upon completing the install, and every time I run YAST to do updates, I get a message about this: "Error refreshing service ATI Repository (http://www.ati.com/suse/11.2):" How is it that this repository entry survived the upgrade install? Ok, forget that, how do I get rid of this when I can't get it to display in the list of repositories I have?
What is even worse, I don't have ATI drivers on this system (I had uninstalled them a year ago, pulled in the NVidea, esw, etc.) as I had put an NVidea adapter card in, in place of the ATI built in (on the MOBO). Somehow that dropping of the repository didn't work, and now I have this thing in limbo? ps. I can't figure out what string to search in my file system or I'd have deleted the sucker last night during the install manual reboot.

my own fault really,just dived in to do the update and did not back everything up. I have three disks in my machine one winxp for games , one was suse 11.2 and added lately one for ubuntu. added the ubuntu disk installed and this replaced the grub loader, still gave me all my previous options but does not look as nice as the suse one.so I did update on 11.2 and thought would give me the nice one back and still have all my entries. Er no. entry for win and 11.3 but no ubuntu.

SuSE 11.2 = 2.6.31, ntpd 4.2.4p7. My offset and jitter are large compared to what I see on the internet. I have also been trying to use a GPS+PPS but that doesn't seem to matter one way or the other. They usually start out with offset and jitter in the single digits and drift / move to something like -400 and 80 over a couple of hours. I have tried various remedies under ntp.org like HZ=100, setting clocksource to tsc, hpet, or acpi_pm. I do not know what to do with acpi so i didn't test that. One of my systems has drift of < +-20 which is good. I have tried it on another identical system and also an 11.1 system. One of the systems is not behind my firewall. They do not run a firewall themselves or VM or pretty much anything as they are not being used.
I have used ntp.conf with/without 'prefer'. Here is a recent ntpq -p:

I've recently installed suse x64 kde in dual boot mode with windows. I have 2 primary partitions with ntfs with 1 for windows7 boot and other for data/storage. There is no boot provision for data partition. SUSE install is on extended partition. I am unable to run fdisk -l and boot info script for some reason, kde is freaking me out (used to use gnome for last 4 years). The GRUB shows data as a boot and it added an entry in its menu. I will like to remove that entry from menu list.

We had a perfectly working SUSE OES netware server for some months, and wanted to create a new image backup. Using Acronis Backup and Recovery Advanced Server Software. This worked a treat on our SBS 2008 Server. We went to run it for Novell OES and a system lock up occurred and services such as Iprint then disabled. A server restart recovered the server after a few attempts. We then learnt that the server could not write files to an NTFS formatted USB drive. This was the ideal destination to test the backup. However we could not even write a simple file to the drive without an error message about permissions.
We then learnt that Linux needs a package called NTFS-3G to enable NTFS writing permissions. This did fix the writing issues. We attempted to run another back up which again failed, bringing down the server. We again attempted to reboot the server this time we fail to get to the graphical user login. At the suse Linux Enterprise boot screen we select "boot from hard disc". Which fails immediately with "GDM could not write a new authorisation entry to disk...Error no space left on drive". When the boot eventually continues, a number of things fail with the same message about "No space left on device".
The next message starts "Could not start the X server due to some internal error."
Further to the above, starting "recovery" instead, the checks of partition fail and it seems obvious that the partition definitions have become corrupted. In the expert partion manager the lines for partitions seem correct except that there are no entries for 'mount point' and 'mount by' columns. Trying to edit these lines does not appear to allow entries for mount point or mount by - they are disabled. It seems likely the server is not mounting some partitions at boot which is why the kernel thinks the server is full. Is there some simple way we can use say fdisk to repair the partition definition without loosing anything of the server OS and data ?

I have manually added an entry for Ubuntu in my grub menu, using Yast. But every time the kernel is updated, this entry disappears. On the other hand, the one for Windows, that was added during OpenSuse's installation, is still there. So how can I keep this entry for Ubuntu ?
Edit : when I save the menu configuration in Yast, I get the following message :
Code:

I agree that this is a problem in making every NTFS partition a boot selection option in your grub menu.lst file during the installation of openSUSE. Someone should consider asking help from please_try_again in the openSUSE forums on how to find a bootable Windows partition and add that fuction to the openSUSE installer. Here is a pointer to the findgrub article here.
Looking for Grub and Windows bootloader in all partitions.The basic situation is that there is normally is only ONE booting copy of Windows, so why would you create three or four menu entries due to the number of NTFS partitions found on a hard drive? Finally, just as indicated by Jean-Daniel Dodin, If one of those partitions in the restore partition and a user boots it, it could be all over for the user copy of Windows, for the openSUSE install and for ever getting this user to try openSUSE again.

I used K3B to rip some of my DVDs (using the Xvid codec) onto my laptop to take away on holiday with me. This worked fine for 2 of the DVDs but the 3rd one ended up with the audio out of sync with the video. Fortunately VLC comes to the rescue with the ability to offset the video and audio tracks.Is there a way to re-encode the ripped files to permanently fix the offset.

I got a new laptop, a Dell D400. I want to swap my hard-drive from my old laptop into the new one, and did so... but then got an error stating that my CPU didn't support PAE.
As far as I was aware I hadn't actually installed a kernel with PAE enabled [as I always pick a real-time kernel for audio work]: but then read that lots of the newer distibutions are enabling PAE by default [which is what's caused the problem].
Is there an easy way of disabling PAE in the existing kernel? Or would it be easier to downgrade to another version of OpenSUSE? I'm on 11.2.

Will I have any compatibility issues with my Display Adapter since I have had problems previously on Ubuntu with my onboard ATi Graphics..

I found what I believe to be odd behavior on an OpenSuSE 11.0 computer today. I needed to add some disk space on one of our computers and here is what I did: This computer had a separate disk for swap space so I deactivated swap (swapoff -a) and then removed the swap entry from /etc/fstab. I then shut down the computer and replaced what was a single disk used only for swap with a RAID1 hardware mirror.
I then booted the system and added a swap partition and another file system on the new RAID1 volume. Even after activating the new swap space with swap on, no swap ever seems to be actually allocated. The swap space shows up in top, free, "swap -s" and vmstat, but never gets used. I realize that a reboot will result in the swap being used, but is there anyway to get the kernel to use the swap without a reboot.
It's probably worth noting that I verified this behavior on a second computer. That is I turned off swap, removed the swap entry in /etc/fstab and then rebooted. Swap is never actually allocated until a second reboot. By the way, this was discovered when some of our users attempted to run java on the system where I did the first work and they got:
prompt> java -version
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
Yesterday, java was working fine and I got the same results on my test computer. Is this a kernel bug or just odd behavior?

Saw a reference to putting the swap partition on a separate drive--just minutes after I was considering that approach. Can't find anything recent on the topic, so asking: Is there an advantage to having /swap on a separate HD from data on /home? My thought was that both disks could be active at once, perhaps speeding up a busy application.

I just got a new laptop and installed 11.1, and I want to move my swap file to a 8GB SD card I have. It seems to run very fast, so it will improve swapping speed. I created a swapfile with Partitioner, and I can delete the existing swapfile with GParted during a reboot - but I'm afraid I will make my system unbootable by doing that - don't I need to first tell OpenSuSE what swapfile (on the new sdb) to use? I'm pretty sure it will detect the new swapfile automatically during boot, but it might choke on a missing (old) swapfile.

On my triple-boot PC:
Code:
SuLinux:~ # fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
[Code]....
Will the above procedure accomplish this objective, without crippling openSUSE ? The second swap partition has never shown any activity (on SUSE). I understand (from Using shared swap files) that a single swap partition may be shared. Since these areas are relatively small, It is not inconvenient to maintain separate swap partitions.

I'm a "new" Linux user, have been using Ubuntu for the last year with no problem but I decided to try out a different distribution to get more experience. So I decided to go with openSUSE (which I have been using on a VirtualMachine back at work). I have download the ISO, created an liveUSB (because my laptop dvd isn't working properly) and wanted to install openSUSE on the hard drive partition where currently Ubuntu is. So, I suppose that in order to do this I should choose the option "Import mount points" and select the Linux partitions (drive and swap) and that would be it.

Not sure if I have landed in right place for this question .Problem FacedI have 30-40 heavy load (Memory operations on heap) processor running with each having 30-40 threads.In one of the thread (of each process), I have file locking operation as explained below (say in thread T1)Step 1 - Lock the file using fcntl(SETWLK) on file f1, Basically using wait lock.Step 2 - Read/write data from another file f2.Step 3 - unlock the file f1.As the memory occupied by process increased, the swap area used will reduce - this continues for a long amount of period. When the free swap space is reduced to 100 MB free out of 2 G and VIRT reduces to 120MB free out of 17G, for T1 thread, Step 3 is not scheduled for more than 300 seconds after Step 1 and 2.
I want to understand why this behavior is present - as per my understanding scheduling will occur within micro-seconds and we can expect that the T1 thread of all process should be scheduled without too much delay.Additional InfomationMachine Info : (uname -a), Linux linux 2.6.16.46-0.12-smp#1 SMP Thu May 17 14:00:09 UTC 2007 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/LinuxMemory Info :Total Memory is 16GB + Swap Memory is 2GBI want to know why this behavior is observed in SUSE

We're trying to replicate something that Windows servers can do. Basically on a Windows box, you can give it a static IP address, but there is an option to have it update the DNS server with it's IP and hostname. We are trying to do this on SUSE 11.I know I can get this function to work on SUSE if the box is set up as with DHCP. What we're having difficulty is when the server is set up as a Static IP to get it to update the DNS server

How do you append text to an entry in an existing file? For example, lets say I have a file called "env.logon" in /home/myself/bin that contains the following text:
PATH=/bin:/sbin If I wanted to add, via command line, ":/usr/bin:/usr/sbin" to the PATH= and I
used the "echo" command (echo "PATH=:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin) it would create a second entry and my file would look like:
PATH=/bin:/sbin
PATH=:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
What I want is for it to look like:
PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
Is there a way to get this result via command line?
