OpenSUSE Install :: Any Way To Disable SU And Only Use Sudo
Aug 12, 2010
I am wondering what the easiest way for me to disable su and perform all root stuff using sudo, the way Ubuntu works. I am using a shared system, openSUSE 11.3, and notice that the only item that gets logged in su is who su'd. I need more information and sudo + command gets logged to /var/log/messages so I can see who did what and when. How can I get openSUSE 11.3 to work similiar to Ubuntu when it comes to running elevated commands or editing files that a normal user doesn't have rights to?

How do I disable sudo password for nano editor in my box ? I've already tried this following line in /etc/sudoers. But I haven't logged off or rebooted the box maybe this is why it did not work.
user ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/nano
so for example when I try to edit file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf I run nano /etc/nginx/nfingx.conf
or this won't work because nginx.conf file belongs to root ?

I'm using Debian and openSUSE 11.2 and the sudo-ing is a bit different in Debian. It actually makes more sense to enter your own password like in Debian to achieve sudo status than have to use the root password for sudo status. If I for example would like to give someone on my system sudo rights, I can't give them the root password. Thats just like giving them root access. Or is there a way to change that behavior, or just change sudo password, in openSUSE? Or maybe any other best practice for giving users sudo rights?

In Ubuntu, When I type sudo and hit enter, the new command will appear on the command line, instead of simply executing. This is different from other operating systems I've used, such as older ubuntu's, mac osx and debian. Is there a way of disabling this confirmation and having it simply execute the command?

I have been trying to install openSUSE 11.4 on a Windows 7 laptop, but the suggested partitioning sucks and I lack the skills to do it manually. I would like to format the laptop drive, give up Windows for good and do a fresh install of openSUSE 11.4. openSUSE wants me to keep Windows boot. But I do not want it!
I have tried for an hour now. Can't format, there is no options for that in the openSUSE 11.4 install. There are expert options, but I really do not know how many partitions does openSUSE require. For some strange reason openSUSE wants to keep my Windows partitions. WHY? And if I delete all of the partitions, it wont automatically recreate the needed partitions for openSUSE, it only displays errors and won't let me continue.
For the love of God, do I have to open the laptop, remove the hard drive, put it in another computer and format there?
Why isn't there an option for removing all partitions, formatting the drive and installing openSUSE?
How to disable the forced Win 7 dual boot openSUSE offers and do a fresh install with only openSUSE 11.4 WITHOUT ANY WINDOWS DUAL BOOT BS.
By the way, since my laptops internal DVD is broken and I will not repair it until my daughter is old enough to handle optical drives, I use USB DVD and it won't give me any boot options but starts installation right away. This is also strange.

I would like to know a way to disable the usb storage capability of the clients computers on a LAN, running opensuse 11.2.
-- I tried the modprobe -r usb-storage , but nothing happend
-- I tried the nousb option when loading the kernel, it worked, but mouse which was connected through usb port was also disabled
-- Also there is no usb-storage.ko driver inside the /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop/kernel/drivers/usb/storage folder... there isn't the storage folder itself

I've just installed openSuSE 11.2, and I need to disable the feature that causes the laptop to suspend when you close the lid (and it's plugged in to the wall). I've already done this for my user profile, and I've attempted to do it for the root profile, as well, but when the GDM login screen is shown, the laptop still suspends when you close the lid.

Is there a way to disable preload for a given process and/or a set of files? I'm having an issue with MLDonkey, which I configured to run as a service. Apparently, preload is trying to pre-load the temporary files lying under MLDonkey working directory (which are huge), and tis is causing a massive slowdown when booting

Kernel parameter vga=0 or vga=normal does not work as expected - First it works as expected text mode resolution is 80x25, but after some seconds the kernel, or the initramdisk does switch resolution of console again! I hate to say but it looks like OpenSuSe (again) thinks it is more clever than the user.Since rmmod radeon in runlevel 3 says "ERROR: Module radeon is in use", I do think that somehow SuSe ignores my vga=0 ... Is it the kernel or the ramdisk, I do not know where to search, since the parameter vga=0 is accepted and used in the beginning - it switch again after "doing fast boot" or 1-2 lines later..

I have compiled the proprietary nvidia drivers for 11.3. When I boot, even using the nomodeset boot option, the nouveau module still loads, causing gdm/X to fail. I am able to manually remove the modules with rmmod and restart gdm. Everything then works normally. I have added the line "blacklist nouveau" to both 50-blacklist.conf and 99-local.conf in /etc/modprobe.d

I am a rookie. Yesterday, I intended to install a dictionary with the command sudo apt-get install dict-xdict, but it turned out to fail with the error. Then, I quited with Ctrl+ c, and I did not care much till today because when I want install something else today, the error keeps coming out. Therefore, I think I would better remove dict-xdict first, so I use sudo apt-get remove dict-xdict, but the error still appears:
[Code]...
I have already tries sudo apt-get -f install dict-xdict and it doesn't work out. I am hoping to install some other applications now, but I have not idea what I could do to fix this problem or just circumvent it

explain the difference between these two commands. I'm currently reading about changing your mac address and both of these commands show up a lot. They sound like the same thing to me. Is one better than the other, or do you need to use both to change your mac address?
Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 down
sudo /etc/init.d/networking stop

A day ago I finally got around to upgrading the PackageKit installation that had been sitting for a week and a half, so I found a new upgrade for sudo available - the one that gives the sudoreplay command, I forget which version number it is exactly. When I try to use the sudo command I get this notice in my terminal:Code:Can't open /var/db/sudo/me/1: Permission deniedI didn't get it before. What do I have to do to make it open? I'm using SELinux in enforcing mode if that helps.

I try to run a command located in /sbin or /usr/sbin using sudo, like "sudo ifconfig" or "sudo tail -f /var/log/messages", it comes back with "command not found". If I perform a "sudo -i" and drop to a root shell that way, the commands work fine. My sudoers file is as follows:
Code:
Defaults always_set_home
Defaults env_reset
