I, I want to join to partitions, one of them is a primary partition sda3 ( 10Gb), but the second one is an extended, sda10 ( 10GB ). Can I make somehow to see them as a 20Gb partition without touching the other partitions?
View 6 RepliesSince i first installed my openSuse 11.2 on the laptop, I didn't know how much space I'd need for this OS to run. Now I've encuntered the worst - The root prartition is 6GB big and it might run out of space shortly (700MB left).I had Win XP on it but as soon as I learned openSuse to make basic tasks - i removed the ntfs partition.The HDD is 28GB, I have 6GB root, 7,5GB home, 750MB swap (512MB RAM) ans 14,65GB free space off the deleted NTFS.Is there any way to join the partitions, so the root can be 16GB in space and home around 12GB?
Or maybe just make another second /home partition and use a program to allocate the "missing bytes" from root to another partition if it runs out of space?

Now, i'd like to join partitions sda7 and sda8 in a single partition. However, it seems that GRUB is residing on sda8, where there is a Ubuntu installation I don't need anymore, while I use the Ubuntu 9.10 installation on sda7.
To make it more clear, I see two /boot/grub dirs on both partitions, but my pc seems to use the one on sda8.
What's the correct way to handle this problem?
I believe I use Grub1.97 but I don't know if the system is showing me the "wrong" grub (on sda7) instead of the one that's really used.

this is great but I do not understand why join ignores the -e flag and fails to insert FOO in the empty field.
I have vista and opensuse 11.2 on my computer, the problem is i can't open ext3 partitions from vista but i can the other way. I tried Ext2fsd but the linux partition is always in a read only mood even when i change this option. Also, all folders are empty I downloaded the program as admin and compatable with XP SP2.

Unfortuntely, I have several Open suse machines which are currently not part of the domain yet (they are in a basic Workgroup).
get these computers onto the domain so that a user can log on using their domain credentials and I can apply security policies and what not?

I have updated Samba to 3.5.4 after read that default 11.2 version have too many bugs. Now, when I try to join the Domain MYDOMAIN.LOCAL via yast i have only an undebuggable error "unknown error". For yast, my Suse is joined but i'm unable to authenticate, i can't see "MYDOMAIN.LOCAL" at KDM login and if i try to lookup forest i have this error:

I was wondering if there is any way to enable an MS Windows client that is otherwise unable of joining a domain to join a domain controlled by (open)SUSE? Is that inability only for joining a Windows based domain but a client that runs XP Home Edition or similar domain- incapable version of Windows could join a domain if it was controlled by Linux?Pardon my newbie style, but answer doesn't have to be detailed step-by-step, just yes/no answer with some pointers would do. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago.After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run

I've installed Arch Linux onto my Western Digital SATA drive.I love it, best ever, however, I need the fglrx proprietry driver for better 3-d performace, and decided to create a new partition. I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I sincerely doubt it

From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

I've already started looking at different solutions. But I'm not familiar enough with KDE to just be able to solve this problem. I also have a black taskbar since I've moved it to my main screen as it automatically appeared on my small screen. I had a Windows 7 RC/openSUSE 11.1 dual-boot on this computer running on RAID 1. When I installed Windows 7 final, somehow it screwed up my RAID 1. I fought with it for a while, but decided to wipe the logical drive, and then go into BIOS and disable RAID. I reinstalled Windows 7 on the HDD, but I have no RAID now. BIOS shows 4 SATA drives. Windows sees all of them just fine. But the openSUSE 11.2 install DVD can't see any partitions on sda, sdb, sdc or sdd. It however says I still have two RAID logical drives, which I don't. I'd really like to install openSUSE 11.2, but I want it to recognize my Windows partitions, if for no other reason that to see my MP3 collection, my eBooks, etc.

I have just managed to install OpenSuSE 11.3.When I try to access a NTFS partition (holding my .MP3s) I get the error message.There is no application installed that can open files of the type block device (inode/blockdevice).Do you want to install one? Attempting to install one doesn't seem to lead anywhere othe than the same sequence. I used to be able to read NTFS partitions with 11.2 - what has changed?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI use dual boot in the lap, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and openSUSE 11.3 x64, plus another NTFS partition dedicated for data. When I browse normally with Dolphin the 2 NTFS partitions I can see and browse them, but it doesn't allow me to write data (create new files or paste) or modify saved files. It's like a read-only partition. I have to run Dolphin browser as root in order to be able to normally write and modify data. Some other pals however tell me they're able to do it without running as root, although they use openSUSE x86.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a pretty weird problem, which is that I can't format any partitions anymore.
It started when my laptop suddenly froze and I killed it (I just ran FF, IRC client, Kopete, ... and I think the last thing I did was plugging in a USB drive). When I wanted to boot the machine again it gave me a lot of errors that the root and the home partitions are both corrupted.
Repairing the system with the DVD didn't help at all and finally I removed all the partitions to reinstall the whole system.
During the installation it can create the partitions, but it can't format them with ext4.
I tried to format the partitions with a live CD and YaST Partioner and the same problem showed up code...
Texts about partitioning with LVM are quite technical.However I should like to find a text explaining me how to manually make LVM-partitions in OpenSuSE. Like which ones, how big, how to do it. I made an auto LVM with /home. Problem is my entire disk is not used (/root was 5GB max /home was only 7GB max on sda2)and I was not able to make the partitions the seize I wanted.
I have now sda1 configured as /home 280GB and sda2 with the proposed partitioning of Yast. So only 5,9 GB for root. It looks like my try-out is working fine, however. Using normal partitioning is not a good option on my PC. He shows lots of black screens. With LVM no problem at all.
I have an acer travelmate 632 running 11.3.The grandkids have been playing playing frozen bubble in fullscreen mode but the "full screen" was actually only the central part of the monitor.Yesterday, there were a bunch of updates. Today, the kids again played frozen bubble but this time, the "full screen" was really the full screen, not the sub-window. After exiting the game, a window popped up telling me that a monitor had been disconnected and would I like to reconfigure. I said yes.
After reboot, the graphical login failed saying that a serious error had been encountered and that I should consult the KDM logs. I went to console mode but was unable to log in. Neither as root or as the regular user. Both fail with "Login incorrect". In fact, the only way in now is via single-user mode.
Looking through the /var/log/messages, I see a curious set of mesages complaining the, for instance, "/dev/sda4 is not in PARTITIONS" note the upper-case. I then see that, despite what "mount" tells me, ?home (sda4) and /boot (sda1) are not mounted. That is, I cannot list their contents. If I manually mount those partitions, I can list their contents.
Is there a way that I can get Dolphin to mount partitions? When I try to, it gives me an error on the bottom of the window saying I don't have permission to. I also can't mount partitions in other programs like Amarok, because of the same issue.

I have two ntfs partitions I use to store music and data. I've been using them in all my linux boxes without any problems. Simply use Ntfs-3g with noatime and everything works great.
However, since the update to OpenSuse 11.3 writing to my NTFS partitions takes FOREVER. I've specified noatime, relatime and norelatime successively without success. The partitions have plenty of space and are defragmented.
When copying large files, It starts fast at first, but in the last hundred MB it slows down to about 1.5MB/s. Even after the transfer is supposedly done, the HD led remains on and all other read/write activity involving the partition is completely halted.
This can take between 5 minutes to 10 or more depending on the size of the file. When copying several small files, (100 MB or less) it starts at about 1.5MB/s from the beginning.
I have the latest versions of fuse and ntfs-3g installed

Ibe faced similar cases before, and on windows ibe used Recuva with mixed resutls, but. Is there an application in linux i can install on my opensuse 11.4 box to do the same task? Can you guys recommend good linux software (available for suse) that will do this? I read about "TestDisk", but ibe never used it.
