OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.4 Is Not Recognizing USBs?
Apr 17, 2011
It is not recognising USB photographs, whereas 10.1 (don't ask) did. /proc/partitions shows no change. No usb modules are loaded, and loading usb_storage, usbhid and hid (which works on some other Linuces) doesn't help.

I've been having some problems copying files to USBs. If I'm copying a large (100MB+) amount of data, at random points the transfer will just stop for 30+ seconds before continuing. Sometimes it doesn't start up again at all. Consequently, the write speed drops to less than 1MB/sec, sometimes as low as 100 KB/sec. I do not have these problems on Windows 7, where I achieve speeds of ~16 MB/sec easily. I have had the same results with several USBs (2-32 GB) on several file systems (fat32, ext2) with several different computers running fully patched versions of Ubuntu 10.04, which suggests the problem is related to the way the OS accesses the hardware.

So I'm running a live disk of ubuntu 11.04 because my windows 7 is totally messed up and wouldn't recognize my external hard drive and I cant back up my documents. I actually really like Linux and wanna keep it, but I have 2 problems. 1, I can't figure out for the life of me how to connect to the Internet. Its not scanning for any wireless networks and only seems to want me to connect via Ethernet. I think the problem is that it doesn't recognize my wireless card/doesn't know it's installed. Is there any way to fix that? I just want to be able to connect to wifi.
Now my second question. I can acess all my files fine, but Linux doesn't seem to register my external hard drive either, nor any other USB device. It just acts like there not plugged in. No error message or Anything. Is the a way to fix that? I fear that there might be some sort of hard ware issue, because in windows seven it doesn't recognize USB devices or my wireless card (among many many other problems) either. Although, I tried An older version of ubuntu on this same computer once and had a similar wireless issue which I was never able to resolve before my 7 was having any wireless issues.

I have just update from 11.1 to 11.2 and after reboot system hangs when arrives to the screen where all users logins are showed. I run the installation again in repair mode. Everything correct. Started system again in Level 3, login as one of the users and run startx. It starts the desktop but no keyboard or mouse is working. Started system again in level 3, login as root, started gdm and same results. It arrives to the login screen for the different users and keyboard and mouse does not work. System seems to be running as clock in the right down works.
Started system again in Level 3, login as root, run SaX2 and same results: no keyboard no mouse. I am running gnome desktop with last image downloaded openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586.iso. it seems to be something related to bug in OpenSuse 11.2 Milestone 7: (Bugs:Most Annoying Bugs 11.2 dev - openSUSE) HAL may crash, leaving XOrg without keyboard and mouse (Bug #537452), work-around: update with 'hal' package from Base:System

I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my computer. Well, 11.2 is great and all, but issuing ifconfig yields only loopback device. Now, I have OpenSUSE 11.0 installed on my notebook; the system works fine, although I had that very problem initially and had to recompile the kernel in order to make it recognize my notebook's ethernet card. My question is: If I upgrade my notebook's 11.0 up to 11.2, am I sure to have my files intact? Is 11.2 sure to "see" the ethernet card?

I'm having some issues with openSUSE 11.2 recognizing my Broadcom adapter. Following the instructions in the two stickied topics, I can find the adapter both under YaST's Hardware Summary and using the console command /sbin/lspci. I cannot, however, find it with /sbin/lspci -n, and the boot log (viewed with dmesg | less) makes no mention of it either.
Do I need to turn it on or something? This is a dual boot machine, and it works fine under Windows, so I don't think there's a hardware failure at play here.

I run Debian with Gnome on a beat up workhorse ThinkPad. I upgraded to Jessie last week with just one issue. Before the upgrade, I could plug in a USB drive (I use a couple of WD MyPassports most often) and they would mount, read, and write without a hitch.
Since the upgrade, when I plug in a USB drive, the file manager (3.14.1) sees the drive, but when I click on the drive to access/mount it, I receive a dialog box reading: Oops! Something went wrong. Unhandled error message: Error when getting information for file '/media/user/MyPassport1': Input/output error.
If I hit the little “eject” button in the file manager, then mount the drive as root from a command prompt [e.g., mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/external] I can run a directory of the drive, but ls -l /media/external fails. From the command prompt I am unable to perform reads or writes to the drive.
Rebooting into recovery mode (i.e., without Gnome), I get the same behavior with CLI messages reporting I/O errors with the drive. I can run a directory, but ls -l, reads, and writes fail.
This behavior is the same on all three USB ports. It is not limited to these MyPassport devices.
The drives work flawlessly on another headless machine upgraded to Jessie the same day. And on another still running Wheezy.
If I boot the ThinkPad from a live CD (Mint 14, I believe) the USB drives mount, read, and write fine.
My BIOS is up to date, 1.52.
lspci -v says this about USB ports:
Code: Select all00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [UHCI])
Subsystem: Lenovo Device 20f0
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 23
I/O ports at 1880 [size=32]
Capabilities: [50] PCI Advanced Features
Kernel driver in use: uhci_hcd

As every time when a new OpenSuse Version arrives, I tried to install 11.4 (I have 11.2 ans 11.3 on separate partitions, + a Windows 7 that already was there when I bought my computer). Previous versions always recognized existing installations and added them to the Grub list, 11.4 doesen't... it merely recognizes the Windows. This is blocking me from testing it before adopting, as I always do, as I don't know how to add these entries manually; I'm too afraid not to be able to add the entries once installed, and not being able to use my older versions in case I have troubles. What went wrong in this release that developers forgot this important part? How I could manually add my entries for 11.2 and 11.3?

I am trying to install a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, but I am finding it is not recognising my only HDD in the machine. It is working because I am running Windows 7 x64 on it.
Here are my machine specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+
Motherboard: XFX MI-A78U-8309 GeForce 8300
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8300 + 8400
HDD: WDC WD5001AALS-00L3B2 ATA (~415GB)
The installation knows when my IDE drive is plugged in, but I want to install the boot sector in the WDC drive.
WUBI also fails to install on this current drive, though can setup the boot sector OK.

I have a custom 2.6.30.9 kernel that is not recognizing TEAC dv-w28ec. The install kernel from the Slackware 13 install disk finds it. I am not sure what kernel parameter I am missing or is at fault. The slackware kernel is listing it as a scsi drive. I have attached my .config file. Any ideas why I can't see the drive? dmesg and cat /proc/scsi/scsi show nothing about the DVD drive.

I have CentOS 5.2, 32 bit, and a Pentium AE 4 processor. The system came with 2 GB RAM. I added 2 additional GBs of RAM. I realized after booting and seeing only 3.6 GB that I would have to install the kernel-PAE. After doing this, I edited the grub.conf file to make the PAE kernel the default. I verified that the machine is rebooting to the new kernel:uname -a Linux mydomain.org 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5PAE #1 SMP Wed Apr 1 10:02:22 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
So, what else can be wrong that I can't see the entire 4 GB?

I'm running fedora 8 and i have a TEW-424ub. I recently ditched windows, and the only disk i could get was a Fedora 8 dvd. I used ndiswrapper to get my driver installed, then I used the iwconfig commands to hook myself up to my wireless. However, every time i do the command
Code:
My comp freezes up. I then decided to use the GUI to set it up, as it might be less aggravating. It found my network, i input the key, double-check, and it atttempts to connect, then asks me once again.'
Also, if I go to Network Configuration, and activate my ndiswrapper device, it gives me the error & my comp freezes up "Set Encode" (8B2A) SET failed on device wlan0:0 ; Invalid argument.

Amarok 2.4.3 in fedora kde spin with kde update to 4.6.5 was loading my 120gb ipod classic as a generic usb drive instead of an ipod. This made transferring songs impossible.
To fix it: yum downgrade amarok*
Which downgrades amarok and it's dependencies, and then use --exclude=amarok* option with subsequent yum commands until problem is fixed upstream.

I am trying to make my Lexmark P4350 printer work so I downloaded Virtual Box on my laptop and installed Windows XP on it. This printer worked great with XP on another computer. I have done all the updates to XP and it seems to be working just fine but when I go to the printer set up, it is not showing up. I have tried it where I plug in the printer while Virtual Box is running, but it didn't seem to make any difference. When I plug the printer into the usb port, Ubunto starts searching for the drivers but the Virtual Box doesn't.

I am trying the 10.4 version from last months APC DVD (I have used 8.4 (liked it) and 9.4 (failed to install) and I am trying to install it on my spare rig to see how it all goes.
System Specs:
Intel E6850 @Stock Speeds (normally OC'd to 3.2GHz)
G.Skill 2GIG DDR2 800Mhz RAM
WD500GIG SATAII Green HDD
Gigabyte P35 Motherboard (latest Bios)
Nvidia 9600GT Palit Sonic GPU
I boot disc from post, goes through the 1st 3 steps, select time zone etc and it wont find my HDD but it will find my USB mem stick when its plugged in.
I will keep fiddling in the bios to make sure that I have everything correct (it works fine when I installed w7 about 2 hours earlier)
I am installing it without dramas on a old P4 1.6GHz s478, 512mb Ram, 40GIG IDE and a old Geforce MX460 GPU and its at 53% so I know that the disc / version is good.

Since I upgraded to Ubuntu Natty, dvdFab has not recognized any DVD I insert into the drive. The program loads through Wine with no problems, and the disk is mounted by Ubuntu, but no dvd drives are recognized by dvdFab. I guess it will be a conflicting setting or something, but I would like to know if there is a solution, because my DVD player is knackered and only accepts DVD5's -not double layers any longer.

I'm trying burn an ISO to a DVD+R. but I cannot seem to get it recognized. The drive will read a CD-R that I have, but not the DVD. I have found quite a few threads about this, but none had any working solutions. Does anyone know what I could do? Could it be because the bottom of the disc is blue rather than silver?

I currently am dual booting linux mint and windows 7. My only hard drive is partitioned in two, one for linux mint and one for windows 7. I installed linux mint with a usb bootable.
I want to replace my linux mint with ubuntu, however, my the usb bootable ubuntu isn't being recognized. I restart the laptop with the usb inside, but it just goes to the grub screen that lets me choose between linux mint or windows 7. The boot order has USB in first position as well. I used the usb creator as suggested on the ubuntu downloads page to create a usb bootable too. I've done this installation before with both ubuntu and mint... but now it's not working.
I tried "sudo update-grub" within linux mint with the usb plugged in, and restarting afterwards, but I still can't see the usb in the grub screen.

I am trying to run Drupal on a RHEL 5.5 box and am told that my PHP version is too old and must be at least 5.2I see that my version is 5.1. I try a yum install php but am find that I have the latest version that RHN provides.I download, configure, and install php 5.3, which appears to install correctly into /usr/local/bin. Drupal still complains about the PHP version.I note that although my $PATH has /usr/local/bin before /usr/bin, 'php -v' gives me 5.1 and 'whereis php' gives me /usr/bin.I try to work around this by copying /usr/local/bin/php to /usr/bin/php. Now 'php -v' gives me 5.3 but Drupal still says that my version is too old.I try to restart httpd but it does not help. Neither does 'yum remove php'.

I have a server for virtualization (Xen) and when I do a free -m it does not show all the memory (which should be 64GB), it shows 32GB (a considerable difference, isnt it?).
My hardware is a Dell R410 server:
Dual Xeon 5530
64GB DDR3
4x SAS 500GB in RAID 10
I tried to compile Xen 4.0.1 but I can't solve a compile error that it gives me (if you want to take a look: [URL]) that is the end of the compilation including the error. But, I installed Xen from yum directly after reformating the HD and it works fine now.
My kernel version: 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5xen x86_64
CentOS 5.5 64 bit
[root@server1 xen-4.0.1]# cat /proc/meminfo
