i unplugged the wrong machine during an rdiff-backup run, and when i try to ssh to that machine now, i get 'connection refused'. the machine was set up with ssh-copy-id before the accidental unplug.

Only ancient versions seem to exist in any repository, which appears to rule out use of yum. Finding rpm packages also seems extremely difficult. And I'm not too clear what would be required to install from sources.
Is it possible (on lenny, in case that matters) to backup some directories with rdiff-backup, with the target being a WinXP Pro Host, i.e. the target being a SMB share? My idea is to start the XP-Box over WOL, run rdiff-backup and then shut it down using "net rpc SHUTDOWN"...

- /ext
- /backup
- /dev
- /mnt
- /proc
/ext is a symlink to /mnt/vg1/vol1, under which are installs and media directories.
I'm running:
rdiff-backup --backup-mode --include-globbing-filelist backup.list / /backup
rdiff-backup keeps recreating a symlink: /backup/ext -> /mnt/vg1/vol1, which is kind of missing the point, because then it doesn't actually back up the files in /mnt/vg1/vol1/installs, etc.
I have carefully made daily backups using rdiff-backup, so in the case of needing to restore I can do so.
But I deleted a directory yesterday, and made a backup in the evening. Therefore, the directory is not in the latest mirror, but in the incremental backup from yesterday.
Now I need to restore the directory. But I cannot figure out how to!
I can see the directory in yesterday's incremental backup; i.e., the following works:

Where [backupdir] is the backup (mirror) directory, and [nameofdir] is the name of the directory I'm trying to restore.
So, I have tried to restore. This is the type of thing I have tried:

Where to-restore.lst holds the name of the directory to restore (in rdiff-backup's format) and [restoredir]is where I want the restored directory to go to.
But, I get errors like:

Useful file specifications begin with the base directory or some pattern (such as '**') which matches the base directory. Well, obviously the file specification doesn't exist in the [restoredir]. That's because I'm trying to restore it! If I try to create an empty directory first, it complains:

Everytime I restart my PC and the login, Before the login window goes away a window pops up saying "Power Management has stopped working" If I click cancel nothing happens, if I click Logout Anyway then the window goes away and I continue to login. Whats up with that? I am using a Desktop.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.
Here's a weird one. Once in a while I inadvertantly hit the key combination RIGHT-ARROW + INSERT on my keyboard while editing in Geany. This stops my mouse buttons from working and I have to kill xorg. Anyone heard of this before or how to fix it? I know I know, I should stop hitting those keys by accident, but it seems to happen at least once a day! This is on Fedora 12.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen in my Fedora 10 I power off the system, by using the gnome icon or even the command line "poweroff", it shut down the machine and power off it as expected - EVEN THE NIC. I can see its led is off ! This happens when I put the machine in hibernate mode too, but not in suspend mode. When I power on and and power off it just after the POST messages, when grub is waiting a key to select an option, I can see the NIC's led is still blinking at each second or so. When I power on the machine and select windows (dual boot system) and then power it off, it power off as expected, I mean, it leaves the NIC on - the led blinks even with the machine powered off. As result, I can't wake up my machine remotely by using Wakeup-On-Lan since the NIC is powered off by Fedora.

Turning it on this morning, NO domain names can be resolved anymore.I can ping IP adresses directly, and even get to them in FireFox if I type the IP address. However, typing any domain name at all fails. I cannot ping or SSH to any domain name, but as soon as I enter an IP, it works. I can ping the DNS server by IP that is set in my /etc/resolv.confI checked on an XP system using the same DNS server set in /etc/resolv.conf (which can also be pinged on IP from my FC11 system), on the same connection from the same ISP, and it works.E. g. without touching anything at all (and all updates are turned off) my FC11 system has stopped resolving domain names.I'm running 32bit FC11. The system has been working fine for more than 2 years.So it has spontaneously stopped doing DNS when I enter a domain name. Where can I start looking?

Several weeks ago, after an automatic update via the update manager, my wired network stopped working. I did not notice it directly, since my wireless connection took it over. I only noticed it when I had to work in an office where I didn't know the wireless password.Since then, I have been trying several things and searched several forums. It is hard to find any troubleshooting information about wired networking, as most of the problems seem to occur with wireless.
I did verify that there is no hardware problem. My laptop is dual boot and when I boot the other operating system, the wired network works without problems (as does the wireless.)My Ubuntu version is Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS. My kernel version is 2.6.32-25-generic i686. I hope anybody can help me getting my wired network working again.
I am having problem with wireless networking my fedora 12 since i opened network manager yesterday. But to my notice i haven't done any changes. But still i am not able find any reason for the wireless network not to work. When i try to restart the network servies it gives the following msg.

I have been using the commandline for network manager cnetworkmanager in Fedora 14 without any problem. For the most part I used it to restart my vpn connection like so:

cnetworkmanager --activate-connection=user,'AAABBBCCC',eth0,& this was in a script that I put in the /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/ folder so it would start automatically whenever the vpn disconnected.
Last night, I had an epiphany and upgraded to Fedora 15, which seems to be working fine for me after updating a few programs including cnetworkmanager
At one point I realized that my neat little script wasn't working anymore though, so I checked out what happens at the commandline when I type the above command in:

I successfully set-up an FTP server, that worked great and perfectly, but after restarting the computer, it has stopped working.None of my router's settings have changed. I restarted the vsftpd process.
View 2 Replies View Relatedpulled the wireless USB adapter out of the back of my laptop when I was using it. I plugged it back in and it can see my wireless network, but it can't connect. Everytime it tries, it just shows the connecting icon on the top bar for a few minutes and then says that the network has been disconnected.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB adaptor, but nothing I've done seems able to fix the issue. Anyone know how to fix this?
The USB adaptor I'm using is a Trendnet TEW-424UB
I have had ubuntu about a month now and everything has worked great up until now, I was surfing the web and all the sudden I lost connection. I tried to connect to the signal but got nothing so I did a reboot. After the reboot my wireless signal didn't show up. i right clicked the connection icon on the top taskbar and the enable wireless is blacked out to where i cant click it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Thinkpad T400 notebook that dual boots windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04. My wireless has worked both in windows and ubuntu for the past several months. However 2 days ago, the wireless in ubuntu stopped working. I think this may be a result of trying to set up a static eth0 connection between my laptop and an embedded board, but I dont see how messing with eth0 would stop the wlan from working.
Symptoms: When I left click on the network connections icon in the tray, all it lists under "Wireless networks" is "device not ready". Needless to say, there are no networks available to connect to. Also the wireless is working fine under windows.

Last night I was trying to get my printer working, and when I rebooted, I lost networking and sound.I am currently booting on a live CD, and sound and networking are fine-- so it can't be a hardware issue (obviously). I must have inadvertently broken something, but I can't figure it out.I have tried restarting networking, but it doesn't respond-- it says stop/waiting or something like that.I can't access the sound preferences-- it says waiting for sound to respond (or something like that).
When I reboot, sometimes I see a terminal window with the same line scrolling very, very quickly-- something about waiting for USB. Additionally, the system is very slow to respond-- clicking a menu item can take a long time for it to appear, etc.What could have occurred, and how might I troubleshoot it?
Just recently the wireless stopped working on Ubuntu 10.04. The machine is AcerOne AOA-150. I did notice recently the wireless would stop working, and I would need to either 1) reboot 2) switch the wireless off by moving the switch from left to right in front of the laptop.
However, this time nothing is working. I've provided some detail and if more information is needed, let me know.

View 6 Replies View RelatedBeen searching for hours and looked at several other threads but still can't figure this out. We have 4 folders being shared from a Ubuntu 10.4.2 LTS Server using Samba. A couple days ago two computers in the office lost access to these shares. The other computers in the office are fine. So far as I know nothing has changed on the server. I can putty into the server still but I can't map a drive or open a window through run (\server_nameetc).
I've also tried disabled iptables on the server and windows firewall on the the windows xp machines. Still no luck. What am I doing wrong? Like I said, so far as I know there have been no changes to the server whatsoever. One day it was working and the next it just stops.

I have Debian installed a year ago, working perfectly until last week when network card connected to internet stopped to communicate. I did no change in configuration. It just stopped to work while I was reading an online web page. Network card connected to local network still works fine.
I thought it might be a NIC failure so I installed a new PCI NIC but no change, still no communication throught this NIC.
I verified/changed cable between NIC and the router, no luck. If I connect the same cable from router to a Windows PC, everything is OK. If I connect back to Debian machine, it does not work.
I tried connect this NIC with a different router with DHCP enabled, nothing, NIC will not communicate with DHCP server.
I tried to set static IP, no change.
Today I booted a Knoppix 6.2 and this NIC worked perfetly! It set up using DHCP, I could access the internet.
I booted machine as usual and the problem still persists of course.
This is information captured immediately after boot. The trouble NIC is eth0 after boot finishes.
All this was captured with eth0 connect to a router with DHCP enabled. There is no DHCP entry in syslog related to eth0. Reinstall is the very last option.
I have a laptop, and the wireless and cable worked fine for a while, but one day, for some odd reason, the wireless and network cable just stopped working. I'd connect to the web, and I would get output using "ifconfig" and the GUI wireless signal. When I hook up the wire, it detects it. However, no matter what I can't load any web pages. The wire does work in another house, and my windows partition utilizes these devices well. Any ideas?Additionally, I am able to log into my wireless router and change configurations, but that's about it :/.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've started to set up a server at my house, where I eventually want to run it headless, and I can just VNC in from my other Desktop. I installed Ubuntu 10.10, setup remote desktop on the server, and from there was able to do any work remotely. That was nice. I turn the computer off at night, and the next day when I was going to work on it, I cannot VNC in anymore. One day passed, and now every time I try to use VNC it comes up with "Failed to connect to server" I also set a static IP address on the server too, so I know the address isn't changing every so often.

I have a cisco pcmcia card that I got working to use as a backup, but I would prefer to use my internal card. The card is the Intel Pro 2200BG. Please let me know what information is needed to diagnose and correct this issue. I am relatively new to Linux (Currently using F10) and trying to learn.This is the iwconfig from my cisco card. The Intel card was working fine yesterday. but now doesn;t even show up.
