Two machines with Lucid installed last week, both installed with the same standard settings. One machine can see the network and both itself and the other machine, the other PC cannot see the first machine or itself. In the Network window all I get is a folder saying 'Windows Network' and clicking that ticks away for a minute or so before saying error, cannot connect to it.
On both machines I have created a shared folder on the desktop to trigger an installation of samba shares which has happened.I cannot connect to the other PC by entering its IP address into location either.

I just wanted to share how I got my wireless network working after spending several hours doing it wrong. It might be helpful to others. My wireless router is set up as a "hidden network". That is, it doesn't broadcast the SSID to prevent hackers. My laptop connected fine under Windows, but not Ubuntu.Lots of posts told me to do stuff in the Network Manager. I tried, but I couldn't find the right settings. It turns out there are *TWO* different programs that control the network settings. I was using the wrong one.
To get to one of them you go to System/Preferences/Network Connections. This program is *NOT* Network Manager. Whatever I tried to set up in this program, I could not get a working connection. The other program, the *REAL* Network Manager, is a different program altogether. You get to it by clicking the network icon at the top right corner of the screen. The problem is you can barely see it if the network is not working. When the network is down, all you can see is a tiny greyed out triangle. That's the thing you have to click. After I clicked this and followed the steps under "Connect to a hidden network".

I just installed xubuntu on my desktop. I am using a D-Link USB to connect to the internet wireless. It picks up all of the other Networks around me, but when I try to connect to my hidden network, It will not connect. I made sure the name and password is correct. I really need to connect it to the internet.

Wireless worked when I broadcasted the SSID, but now when I have hidden it it will not connect.
Edit: Enabled SSID broadcasting again, since hiding it means less security I read.

I had had my internet connection working using PPPoE, but after I did some tweaking and configuring on the machine (configuring Samba), I wasn't able to connect to the internet and on the syslog said:Code:Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARPI'm using dynamic IP address on my internet account. Is this problem related to Samba server configuration that is running?

When I click on the 'connect to hidden wireless network' I get a pop up window. All boxes are selectable with 'new' as the connection. If I click on that drop down and select my ESSID, all the boxes, including the 'connect' box are greyed out. If I enter new network name and the security I can get a connection. If I put down my original ESSID down as the new network name, it works, but if I then look at network preferences, I have two wireless connections with the same name.

My network has SSID broadcast turned off, it took me several attempts before the crappy ubuntu network manager figured out that I want to connect to that network automatically.
Yesterday my laptop ran out of battery and entered on hibernation. Now, the crappy network manager can not connect to the network anymore. I tried everything. I restarted, I removed the connection from the list. But after asking to connect to the network, and enter the SSID and the WEP key, it simply won't connect.
The worst part is when I tried to load a pre-defined configuration using "Edit Connections", It displays the connection name, but the "Connect" button is disable.
Is there any way to connect to this hidden network? Or it is not supported.

I've seen other users post this same issue, but can't find anyone who has been able to solve this problem...
I have SSID broadcasts turned off on my wireless router (always a good choice for increased security). Even though I have put a check mark on "Connect Automatically" in my wireless network's configuration under SYSTEM > PREFERENCES > NETWORK CONNECTIONS, it will not connect automatically. I have to click on the network manager icon in the notification area of my desktop, and select "CONNECT TO HIDDEN WIRELESS NETWORK" in order to get online. Network manager does indeed connect automatically to APs that broadcast their SSID. (I don't want to enable SSID broadcasts on my router.)

I have an Eee PC 1015PEM with Ubuntu 10.10, I believe the wireless card is an rt3090 (though sometimes I see references to rt2860).I had problems getting this to connect to any wireless network originally but eventually was able to fix this by blacklisting a number of modules. However I am still unable to connect to hidden networks and have not been able to find a solution.

How to move hidden folder from /home to another location - on another partition? Is it possible? I'd like to move some folders for example ./thunderbird or so that I wouldn't need to make a backup. Or at least is it possible that program can right files to two folders, or that everything from /home./thunderbird would copy automatically to ./thunderbird on another partition every time there is a change? Is it possible to write a script or something? I use luckybackup but I would like to be able to forget about backups and make script or program to do it for me.

My college providers shifted to a different setting.. I'm not sure what needs to be done. On windows, under the connections tab you need to change the proxy settings and put in the IP address and enter the port to 3000. Questions:
1. where lies the linux (ubuntu 10.04) variant to execute the operation.
2. What can be the major obligations of such a change?
I am sure its siimple enough, but I can't get my net to work properly. The connection provided to the internet is through wireless routers.

I have noticed that I am not the first one to have problems with samba and connecting to a Windows PC. I have read so many articles and I have tried a couple of things that seemed to make sense, but no luck.
I can connect from my Vista to my Ubuntu netbook remix, but not the other way around. I get the error message: "Unable to mount location", "failed to mount windows share" and I get "mount error 12 = Cannot allocate memory" in Smb4K.
There was a suggestion that "mount error 12 = Cannot allocate memory" indicated it was a problem originating in Vista, but the added registry values on my Vista PC that was suggested didn't change anything. I have also read and [URL] and implemented 3.1 and 3.2 but it made no difference either.

Is there a way to connect to a samba share on the other side of a dynamic ssh tunnel?I like to use ssh -D 8080 <host> to access the network on the other side of a ssh session. For applications with their own proxy settings it seem to work really nice.In this particular case I'd like to use the 'Connect to server' feature in Ubuntu to connect a samba share through the tunnel, but I can't figure out how to make only that connecton use proxy settings. If I enforce system wide proxy settings the ssh tunnel will die, so that is not an option.

Having a bit of an issue connecting to my apache2 server. I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04lts. I can only connect to my website via ip address global, ip address local, and the dyndns domain I have linked to my ip address. I have DMZ setup for my server with a local static address of 192.168.1.100. I can only connect to the default apache page via lan, and It wont load when I try via proxy. I need to know how to configure my router (wndr3300) so that I can connect to my server (address 192.168.1.100) and the pages from outside of my network.

Trying the various settings (and noticing ubuntu gnome users recently had the same exact OPPOSITE problem -- they can't SHOW hidden files in dolphin) to hide my hidden files in dolphin is not working. The settings are saved OK, but those damn (ending in tilde, ie "~") files do NOT ever hide! I even see the correct little green recycling symbol on them, indicating they're identified as such, but no actual hiding goes on..
Nautilus, which I've used before (but have grown tired of, and was looking forward to dolphin), also has a weird issue that seems to have appeared with FC13 (I'd been using FC12 'til now mostly because of this) - there's no way (AFAIK) to tell it to show the location; to see it, you have to click Go->Location each time. Previously I could set it to print out the whole file or server path and it would stay that way when I opened new windows.. This is on fresh install & update.. kernel is 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64.

I used windows OS and installed Ubuntu 10.04 (amd64) in separate partition and works well but had a problem in internet connectivity. Likely reason may be the proxy setting that we used in college (currently). I used this commands to set up the IP address and gateway.
ifconfig -a | grep eth
"eth0"
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.5.209 netmask 255.255.255.0
[code]....
Then I manually set the proxy setting of HTTP which is given as proxy server 192.168.5.2 and port as 8000, further more there is a wins setting which is 192.168.1.178, really don't know where to put this number.

When I installed Ubuntu 11 Server, it asked for a proxy http address. I gave it our address, I'll call it a.b.c.d. It did not, however, prompt for the port number (8080). Now, when I do the following:
sreeve@pto:~$ !20
sudo apt-get update
0% [Connecting to a.b.c.d (a.b.c.d)] [Connecting to a.b.c.d (a.b.c.d)]
it just sits there for a while and then says:
unable to connect to a.b.c.d
Is there a way to give it a proxy http address with the port number also?

""WARNING CONNECT method received on http Accelerator port 3128"
""WARNING for request: connect CONNECT login.yahoo.com:443 HTTP/1.1"

I'm trying to set up a server for an NPO who connects to the Internet through an internal proxy (Websense). I can't access the Internet unless through the proxy.
Since it's a server I did not install a GUI so I'm wondering how to connect the new server to said proxy server. I have the IP address, port number and username-password for the proxy server. The new server has a static IP address and is ready too go!

I am unable to connect to the Internet in lucid via a proxy server using apt-get or synaptic. Opera & firefox connects to the internet fine with the proxy setting.
I have tried the following solutions:
1) set proxy setting using systems|preferences|network proxy
2) editing ~/.bashrc & /etc/.bashrc
3) creating a /etc/apt/apt.conf file.
4) putting the proxy setting in synaptic
For the proxy setting I have used the both the verbose name as well as the ip address. There is no logon requirements for the proxy server. Either formats work in the browsers.

Kernel: 2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686
WLAN: Broadcom BCM4311
Problem: I run WPA2 Personal encryption on all my wireless devices. At work we use Cisco WAPs and I can connect flawlessly, simply by entering the password. At home I use Apple's Timemachine, which is basically an Airport Extreme A/B/G/N router.
I go to Network Manager and choose "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network". I enter in the SSID of my home wireless, choose WPA2 Personal, and enter in the password. After ~1 minute Network Manager spits back a window requesting the WEP key.... But I'm not running WEP. This is extremely frustrating. I delete the network and try again... same behaviour. My assumption is that this may be isolated to Airport Extreme network devices but I'd really love to find a fix. Just FYI: I have a MacBook Pro and a system running Vista that connect without a hitch.

I am having a little trouble connecting to my wireless network. Running Fedora 10 32 bit.I'm trying to connect to a hidden wireless network. I updated the firmware for my driver but apparantly the driver is still not working. Broadcom has a driver from their website for Linux 32 bit systems. Should I attempt to install it? I read a post where the driver is built into the system kernel. If so I would need to blacklist the one of the drivers. Correct?
