I am using Unbunto desktop and installed "likewise open" so that my linux client can access windows active directory(join the domain). On server side i have windows 2003 server. Networking :: RedHat Client Ignores DUP ACKs And Waits 200ms To Retransmit

May 25, 2011

Mu understanding of RFC 1122 (Fast Retransmit) is that upon receipt of the 3rd duplicate ACK, the sender should react by starting to retransmit the lost packets.

In my case, looking at the Wireshark trace, I see the sender receiving hundreds of DUP ACKS from the receiver and doing nothing about it until 200 ms pass by. Only then does the sender finally starts to retransmit. That's killing performance.

The sender is running Red Hat 5.3 (which is Linux 2.6.18). Is this an indication that the sender does not support Fast Retransmit? Is there a config param that I need to turn on?

Fedora Networking :: Windows Sever 2k3 Domain Controller / Use Machine With Samba As Secondary Domain Controller?

Apr 28, 2009

At the school i work in i have a server2k3 server that provides a domain to all the windows clients, aswell as a fedora server that acts as an imaging machine and webserver.

Im rather concious of the fact that if for any reason the Server2k3 server was to die there is no backup of active directory, or anything that can take its place whilst a replacement is found.

So is it possible to use a fedora machine with samba as a secondary domain controller? so it can be used as a login server, and has a copy of AD.

OpenSUSE Network :: Domain- Incapable MS Windows Version To Join Suse Domain?

Jun 9, 2010

I was wondering if there is any way to enable an MS Windows client that is otherwise unable of joining a domain to join a domain controlled by (open)SUSE? Is that inability only for joining a Windows based domain but a client that runs XP Home Edition or similar domain- incapable version of Windows could join a domain if it was controlled by Linux?Pardon my newbie style, but answer doesn't have to be detailed step-by-step, just yes/no answer with some pointers would do. I am not new to linux but new to network services... search engines weren't friendly when asked this question at the search bar...

Networking :: Replace Windows AD Domain?

May 29, 2010

At home I am using a Windows Server 2003 as Domain controller with Active Directory. My "client" computers are all currently running Windows XP. They all require CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and the user to enter their credentials before they will allow logon.

Shared files reside on various other Server 2003 machines and have restrictions on so only specific users can access certain resources.

For example, I have the family finances and other important documents in a share named 'Private-Files', only members of the 'PrivateFiles' global group have access. Likewise, I have my movies sorted into their appropriate age categories - after all, I don't want my 5 year old son accidentally watching Aliens!

So this all works but as you can imagine, the copies of Windows XP and Server 2003 are far from legitimate. I want to go legal and the only real way I can afford to do this is to switch over to Linux.

I have used Suse, Ubuntu, Fedora and a few other distros in the past and found that for ease of use, I want to use Ubuntu on the desktop computers but power the servers with some flavour of Linux.

The problem is, although I can install the OSes, I have no idea where to proceed from there - for example, how do I create a Domain in Suse? Where and how do I create domain users and groups? How do I set permissions on shares for the domain users?

Networking :: Nslookup Returning Multiple Names On RedHat With Windows AD

Jun 11, 2010

Recently I installed RedHat Enterprise 5 on a windows machine. The machine is configured to use DHCP, but I have been seeing some strange behavior if I do nslookup on the machine's IP:

[someuser@lin01 mydir]$ nslookup 10.5.x.x
Server: 10.10.x.xx
Address: 10.10.x.xx#53
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = xyz.something.
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = lenovo-d1690047.
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = pqdlds.
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = lin01.mydomain.com.

Where only the last entry of [URL] is actually correct, how can remove the other entries? I spoke to my IT Manager and he cannot see these stale entries in the DNS (we are using windows AD)

Ubuntu Networking :: Login In Windows Domain?

Jul 21, 2011

With Kerberos it's possible to join and login in Windows domain. The easiest way to do is this or I think so...

When installing likewise-open, it installs Kerberos also. I have no idea what are those realms and other stuff. There's some guides (also by Microsoft!), but it's gibberish for me. My native language isn't English, so half of those words go in one ear and out from the other.

I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 and I'm able to join the domain with my Windows clients. Now I want to join with Ubuntu but I have no idea what to do.

Like what's FQDN how to find out domain's FQDN Whats Kerberos realm and what it should contain how to install Kerberos correctly and so on

Ubuntu :: How Interacts With Domain Users When On The Windows Domain

Feb 3, 2010

At work, we run Windows... Windows domain, windows workstations, etc. Today my boss asked me my thoughts on running an Ubuntu lab within the mixture of our existing Windows setup.

Well, that brought several questions to mind. So I understand you can bind an Ubuntu computer to a Windows domain, seems easy enough, whether you do it through Samba or the other guide I read that I kind of forget at the moment, but anyway...

I was just curious how Ubuntu interacts with domain users when on the windows domain. For example, if we have an Ubuntu machine on the Windows domain with a local user "administrator" and that's it, would any domain users be able to log into the Ubuntu work station, similar to how it is on Windows?

Server :: Connecting To A Samba (not On Domain) From Windows Domain Pc?

Jun 27, 2011

i need to allow window domain controller user to use file share of linux.windows DC user can see the share file and directories of linux file server but not able to access.

below is brief--

I have a Linux machine which is on my network but not on my domain. I have configured SAMBA FILESERVER for file sharing purpose. I have a Windows XP PC which is on the domain(windows server) that I am trying to connect to a share on the Linux box. I supply my credentials but regardless of which login I use I always get Logon Failure. I have created an account on the Linux machine with the same user name and password as my domain account but so far no luck. Can I connect from a domain PC to a non-domain Linux box? Is there something else I should be checking?

Server :: Domain Controller On A Current Windows Domain?

Dec 30, 2010

I'm working for a smallish non-profit that has gone through some recent growing pains. We have two sites that are currently without a domain controller, and no money for MS licenses, so I was thinking of trying to add a couple of additional Linux machines (we already run Linux for web services internally, and I've set up a test case previously to see if I could get a server to join the domain, which was a success) and was trying to find out if I can get them to act as Domain Controllers without replacing the domain. The main issue that I'm having at those locations is drive mappings are not happening correctly against our DFS file servers. The one other location that had this issue had it go away when we added a local DC. The domain is a Server 2008 domain.

OpenSUSE Network :: Client Of More Than 1 NIS Domain?

Oct 7, 2010

I'm trying to set up an openSUSE 11.2 host as NIS client and I would like to knowwhether or not it can be client of two (or more) NIS domains. The reason is thatsome users are authenticated on server1 (nis-domain1) and some others on server2(nis-domain2).Trawling the web, I found a HP document stating that a client can belong to one NIS domain only. However, the yast NIS client interface allows adding NIS domains/servers to the seemingly default one. I'm totally confused.I made the following experiment:1. declaring nis-domain1 in /etc/defaultdomain and server1 in /etc/yp.conf: ypwhich returns server1, ypcat passwd lists the users on server1.2. in the yast interface, I added nis-domain2 and server2; in /etc/yp.conf, there is an extra line "domain nis-domain2 server server2". After reboot, ypwhichreturns server2, ypcat passwd lists the users on server2. But now the maps from server1 are no longer available.

Ubuntu Networking :: Windows Clients Lose Ability To Resolve Local Domain Names

Dec 2, 2010

I have an internal domain (dev.lan) for which my Ubuntu server is authoritative. We have a number of subdomains under that domain (test.dev.lan, svn.dev.lan, etc.). The server also acts as the primary DNS server for my office. It was originally set up under Ubuntu 8 and worked great.

However, ever since we upgraded to Ubuntu 10, our Windows clients periodically lose the ability to resolve domains on the dev.lan domain. Internal IP addresses can still be pinged from the Windows machines so it does not appear to be a network-connectivity issue. External domain names continue to resolve without any problems. The only workaround is to restart networking on the Windows clients. It's frustrating because it happens several times a day.

bind9 logs no obvious error messages.
