Networking :: VPN Access To Web Application From Mobile Workstations
Jun 8, 2010
I'm currently on a project to allow mobile computers in our vehicles to access a web application. Unfortunately, most of our users are just smart enough to be dangerous...I would like to create a large private network over a wireless (3g, 4g, whatever), but in a way that forces the users to be on that network so that I (the evil IT guy) can control what they have access to. VPN seems like a good bet, but I want to be sure that the users are forced to only connect through it. As it stands, they're going to be using XP-based toughbooks.

probably I have screwed myself. I tried to preupgrade to f14 and cancel it after some time. Now, I am facing a problem that I cannot access internet from mobile broadband; but I can access net while i am connected via ethernet or wireless. I have cleared preupgrade files with
Quote:
yum clean all; yum remove @preupgrade
It can detect my HUawei modem and creating an IP as well. But no Internet.

i recently-ish bought a netbook, and a mobile-broadband toggle to go with it, and set it aside to use later. i promptly installed the Netbook remix on the laptop. Well, I goofed, and didn't notice until well after I bought the WAN toggle that it was made for windows.
so, I downloaded Wine in an attempt to run the start.exe and get my internet. the executable (and the entire drive, i found) are marked by ubuntu as read only. Is there anyway to change this to allow me to run the file? if i did, would it even work?

I can pair my phone and laptop using bluetooth, from Network manager I can select my phone and make a connection. But then I can't access anything.I looked at the connection info from nm and tried to ping the given dns addresses. That failed. And I pinged those addresses when I reconnected with wireless and it failed. So, where are these setup? I didn't do it

I have 2 LANs in my network. They are:
LAN 1: 192.168.0.0
LAN 2: 192.168.1.0
Both LANs, communicate with each other. And both have an application server. In LAN1, I can access the web server, internal and external. At LAN2, only works on the internal network. The rule that I'm using is as follows: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -d my_ip --dport 80 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.254:80
This rule works for LAN1, but not for LAN2. Anyone know what that is can be lockin access?

I just got a brand new usb wireless adapter. Plugged it in, picked it up but then a window came up and said "The application nm-applet wants to access the keyring. Please enter password." I entered my password, the window goes away for about 1 second, then comes back up again. With my old usb wireless adapter, it never did this.

last friday my schools isp enabled iwsva - interscan web security virtual appliance from trendmicro. all traffic is now filtered, and slowed down. videos and other videostreams are now useless. after this we have had serious problems using our netbooks with ubuntu, and upgrading workstations with ubuntu has become very problematic, or almost impossible. i have to run the update process 6-8 times before all packages are updated.
what can i do to document the problem in a good way. the isp tells me that there are no problems, and that it has to be a linux problem. (ever heard that one before?) the ltsp-clients on my debian servers does not have the same problems, maybe because they are using the proxy on this server?

I have a cheap and cheerful netbook (Advent 4213) that I carry around with me running the latest lucid build, it has a built in 3g modem which I like cause I don't have to carry a dongle round with me.... which I continually lose anyhow I also have two data plans, one with Orange UK and the other T-mobile UK. The 3g modem is a HUAWEI Technology.
Both sims work for normal Internet access, I can connect to email servers, access web (both http and https) sites, but when I'm using the T-mobile sim Ubuntu One crashes after about 5 mins after attempting to connect. At first I thought it was a problem with either Ubuntu One itself or the lucid build, so I tried accessing the website interface.... I can login but when I go to view my files (I am assuming you are familiar with Ubuntu One) the page "load" progress bar gets so far and then stops..... it appears to be trying to access ssl.google-analytics.com, but just sits there and eventually times out, I am assuming this timeout is what is causing the Ubuntu One to crash.
Stick the Orange sim back in and everything is OK, go back to the T-mobile sim and it no worky anymore hence the reason I think this is a T-mobile issue and not something wrong with Lucid or Ubuntu One..

I've installed CentOS 5.3 on my Compaq Evo N800w mobile workstation (laptop). I was able to map the volume up and volume down buttons to the proper function using System - Preferences - Keyboard Shortcuts. I need to map the Internet Browser, Email, Search, and Media Player to the other Easy Access Buttons that Compaq has on this keyboard. Has anyone had success using programs like keyTouch to get this accomplished? Should I be considering other solutions?

I am testing vnc functions, but I only have 1 imac. I am thinking to set up a server and the viewer on the same machine to see if it would be ok.
The problem happens. It is infinite loops; therefore, I have to shut down my imac to restart everything.
I thought there is something I can do to have server and viewer on the same machine. I am ok to split monitors, but how to let server own a different ip to let the viewer to connect without having infinite loops happen?

some weeks ago, I started getting the prompt from the keyring manager after each login:Enter password for keyring 'Default' to unlock. An application wants access to the keyring 'Default', but it is locked.I don't know what I could have changed, but this is getting pretty annoying. I know that it is not the network-manager, it is configured for "all users" and my Wifi is working even when I cancel the dialog. In fact, canceling the dialog seems to have no effect at all.
Is there any way to find out which application might be trying to access the keyring (and to stop it from doing so)? I already tried disabling some of the startup applications (which seem to be all default anyway) but that didn't help. Please note that I do NOT want to set an empty password for the keyring because I think protecting it is a good thing. I just want to be prompted for the password only when I use it.

I started using Linux when Karmic came out, so I'm a bit of a decorated newb. Anyway, I upgraded to Lucid and noticed something that I can't do anymore. I have a dual-screen setup with 2 workstations. I can drag windows from one screen to the next, but when I try to drag it over to another workstation, nothing happens anymore. The only way I can get it to work now is if I hold down the cursor on the desired window and hit Ctrl + Alt + L/R. How do I report this as a bug if it is indeed one? All I can find is a link to join a bug fixing team.

I have written a simple server application (with an HTTP interface). I want to ensure that only calls from the local machine are processed - i.e. I want to prevent outsiders from accessing/using my server.
How may I restrict outsiders (i.e. requests from remote machines)?
