Networking :: Debian 5 - How To Make A VPN
Jun 11, 2011
I don't know anything about setting up a VPN since I'm new to this. I don't know if there are any programs required to achieve this but here are the details, please mention the steps and configuration I need to do for making a VPN through my VPS :
-> Host machine Debian 5 32-bit
-> Remote machine Windows XP.
Setting up Remote won't really be a problem but the host should be ready for it.

I build and use a custom kernel, and use the nvidia driver. This is on debian stretch.
By default, I build the image and headers packages with this line:
CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=8 nice -n19 ionice -c3 fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-something --revision=1 kernel_image kernel_headers
These kernel sources are usually the sources from debian, with a couple of more patches that I add. It appears that for nvidia-driver package versions higher than 352.79-1, the kernel headers/sources need to be prepared with 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts'. It's that simple. I concluded this after the nvidia dkms build failed on my custom kernel, but then succeeded after I pointed it to the full sources, but only after running 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts' on them. The problem is that this make-kpkg scheme doesn't appear to do this, or if it does, it doesn't properly include in the headers everything that it should.

I know that boot partition is possible to create within debian distribution that has grub 2.0, as I have done before with ubuntu. I have been trying many different options with my preseed file but it keeps taking the boot partition out of LVM and creating and extended partition too and then creates the LVM primary partition.

I have a mini-ITX based system with a 256Mb Flash Drive and 256Mb of RAM.
I aim to use it for the following applications:
Samba Server
Cups
Rsync
Basic Web Server
File based Wiki (perhaps Dokuwiki)
Package Management (to easily add other software as required)
I don't need any X based software or Desktop.
I was hoping to create a Debian Live distribution and run the whole operating system either from a Read Only file system or from RAM.
However (after connecting a standard HDD) and installing basic Debian along with the packages I require (and their dependencies) the filesystem is already over 1Gb in size.
Is there any way this can be reduced drastically in size? Is Debian Live the best way of achieving what I want? Something like Puppy Linux is much smaller in size but I don't want something with such an emphasis on having a Desktop environment which I don't need.

Anyone know how to make a distro like Pinguy OS? How do I rebrand it and add stuff like Pinguy OS. Or should I base it on Pinguy OS and remove stuff I don't want in Pinguy OS.

Yo so there is a problem in the version in the repo so I posted it on the message board on google code for that project and the author told me to get the version from SVN. So I did that but it's not compiling. He's not sure how to fix it and says he's never seen this message before. I'm guessing this is a Debian prob; I'm on Debian Sid.
bash@debian:~/Downloads/gecko-mediaplayer-read-only$ make
make all-recursive

Note: I compiled "gnome mediaplayer" from the SVN fine that is needed by this plugin. I've also does "apt-get build-dep" for both gnome mplayer and gecko plugin.

I'm having a problem with my debian installation; I am using the debian testing / wheezy weekly build CD, and despite using the full 650MB CD, and checking the CD to see that X, gnome, etc is all on there, it seems to insist on just downloading every single package from the internet - the CD doesn't even spin up during the 'select and install software' stage
This wouldn't be that much of a problem, except whenever I choose to use the graphical environment, it downloads all the packages, installs half and then says 'an installation step failed'!. And as it has to download the full set of packages from the net (rather than the CD) it gets a bit tiresome waiting 2+ hours for all the packages to download (I have fast internet, but the debian server doesn't feed data that fast).
And, the reason I am installing the graphical environment is that, although the installer recognises the network card, once you boot into the freshly installed system, it doesn't recognise the network card at all, and trying to bring it up just says 'eth0 not ready'!. So I want to get the graphical environment to make wireless easier to install, since the drivers for that are present, but wpa_supplicant isn't!
I'm tempted to just go and get Linux Mint Debian Edition... but I should be able to at least *install* Debian? (on a side note, I can't see what I'm doing wrong, since you can't really go wrong with the installer - it just seems to fail itself each time!).
how to make the installation faster by getting the installer to use the CD full of packages that I downloaded, rather than downloading the from the net each time, and also how to (1) find out *what* happened (the expert mode just says a step failed and that is it), and (2) to either get round it at the time, or prevent it happening somehow?. I installed Debian in 2007 on another laptop and that worked, but I then moved to Ubuntu as I wanted some newer software...... Ubuntu has been great until 11.04 which seems so full of bugs it isn't funny, so it is time to go back to Debian, if only I could get it installed!

I need to start script I created every time so I created:
/etc/init.d/startflowcapture.
There I put:
flow-capture -w /var/netflow/ft 0/0/2055 -S5 -V5 -E1G -n 287 -N 0 -R /usr/local/netflow/bin/linkme
I made it executable:
chmod +x /etc/init.d/startflowcapture
But permanently adding it to rc defaults shows this error:
update-rc.d startflowcapture defaults
update-rc.d: using dependency based boot sequencing
insserv: warning: script 'K01startflowcapture' missing LSB tags and overrides

For some reason from a fresh installation on Debian (Squeeze), Apt is telling me I no longer need the 'make' package and I can remove it. I find this extremely odd & random given I just built this O.S. Why would Debian want to remove such a package and since this is a fresh installation, is there something I did wrong?

I have made a few programs, and I want to make them debian packages so I can distribute them, but the problem is that most tutorials on how to make a Debian package assume that you are not the person who started the source code, and that there are already things set up in the source code that will help you.

I do not want the usb stick to be erased. What do I do, to not erase the usb stick? If you create a volume on the system hdd, it should not erase the system.

for a project I am working on, I need the same install configuration on every machine, and I'd like to have all the packages I need on one disc, with none of the ones I don't. I also need to use a non-standard file systems(jffs2,nilfs) as the hardware end of my project works on flash memory, and would like these two FSs to replace the typical magnetic disk based choices.

Hi all,
how can I make vncserver starts on boot?
Realvnc was installed by "apt-get install vnc-server" command.
There in NO start-stop script in /etc/init.d/ (is it ok? ), so I can't use update-rc.d. When placing
vncserver
or
/bin/bash -c "cd /root/ && vncserver :1" 2> /tmp/vncstart &
in rc.local it starts nothing but "vncpasswd //.vnc/passwd" (and YES, there is password in /root/.vnc/passwd)
Please, help!

I have 2 linux installations with the same username in each of them, which are on different disks.I would like to create another partiton to use it as home for both distros(the one to be at /home/debian/username and the other at /home/suse/username e.g)First, is this possible? If yes how can I do it, and how much space is enough for the other directories? More details: The first distro is on a 82GB partition, and the second on a 21GB partition on another disk. I'm planning to use all 82GB partition for the shared /home and move both distros to the other disk's partition(in fact the one, the other is already there).So, I'm thinking to resize the 82G partition, to make free space for the /home partition(which filesystem is better to use?). Then to move my user of both distros there in folders /home/debian/username - /home/suse/username. After to resize 21GB partition(how much space is enough for debian?), and on new free space to move the other distro. And finally to resize again the new /home partition to use all 82GB.
And last, this way will be easy if I want to install another distro later, to use the home partition with the same form(/home/other-distro/username? Can I define this at distro's installation procedure?

In particular, I did not find any directories that include "gnome" in their name. Question: how to make the system use gnome?

I have a Redhat Enterprise Linux system and I want to re-make it as Debian. I downloaded the Debian netinst iso but can't seem to make a bootable CD out of it, and I haven't found any adequate explanations anywhere.
I tried burning the iso directly to a disk. i set up the boot order in my BIOS but when I restart the machine it spins the CD drive a few times and then moves on to the hard drive.
I tried expanding the iso into a directory, and then copying all those files into into the "Blank CD-R Disc" on my Gnome Desktop, burnt the CD, and still no boot.
I found some instructions using X3b, but X3b was giving me errors.
