General :: Installed Mandrake \ Can't Connect To Internet?

Apr 6, 2011

I have just installed Mandrake Linux and everything seems OK apart from the fact that I can't connect to the internet. I presume it's because I have not got the relevant driver (or have not configured it if it's there)y machine was previously running Windows and all the disks I have are for Windows.I have looked in my manual and it says I have a K8NBP GRAND (I think that's the motherboard, you'll see that I don't really know a lot!!) The manual also says Gigabit Ethernet LAN : NVIDIA Gigabit MAC + VITESSE Gigabit PHY - Supports 10/100/1000Base- T Ethernet/Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet. When I was running Windows I just had a network cable running out of the back of the PC connected to one of the LAN sockets on my routerI am currently having to use my wife's laptop (which runs on yet another OS but at least it connects to the internet or I'd be really stuffed).

Applications :: Can't Unzip Firefox3.6 In Mandrake OS

Mar 7, 2010

My efforts to install the new Firefox3.6: are going nowhere (literally, it seems)! After entereing: $ tar xvjf firefox-3.6.tar.bz2 on my linux box: [GCC 3.4.1 (Mandrakelinux 10.1 3.4.1-4mdk)] on linux2 the end result comes to nothing. What I should (why would it be different from any other install?) end up with is a new directory "firefox3.6" or something very similar. I don't. I get nothing. Nadda. Once I hit the "tar xvjf..." button, I get the usual 'print (to screen)' flurry of activity. A sample:

firefox/modules/SpatialNavigation.js
firefox/modules/FileUtils.jsm
firefox/README.txt
firefox/libplc4.so
firefox/application.ini
firefox/searchplugins/
firefox/searchplugins/answers.xml
firefox/searchplugins/google.xml

But, I'll be darned if I can find all of this afterward. There certainly was not (as I've noted) a new directory created:

[Code]....

The "firefox/" directory that is part of the above listing? Notice the <Jan 15> date. Obviously an effort from another time. The listing [above] was generated with "ls -t", so the most recent activity is at the top. I simply can't find all the unpacked stuff that was generated with tar. I've looked in /home/.mozilla, tried "locate", all to no avail. "Google" can't seem to understand the problem I'm encountering. Who'd care to tackle this on this beautiful (snow free!!) Sunday morning?

General :: Unable To Start Xserver On Mandrake 9.2?

Jul 6, 2011

I'm basically a linux noobie, and have a problem with one of my machines I use for work. As the title states I am unable to start my xserver, using the startx command I have been using for the past 5 years. It goes to the blue loading screen with the x for a cursor, hangs there for about a min or so then goes back to the command screen. I get an error:

giving up.
xinit: Permission denied (errno 13): unable to connect to xserver
waiting for xserver to shut down
xinit: Server error.

I have tried logging on as root and trying startx again. Same error.

Software :: Corrupt GUI - KDE - Only On Cold Boot - Mandrake 10 - Weird ?

Apr 14, 2011

Summary: Video fault on boot when KDE starts, but only after being shut down properly and turned off. Rebooting yields a perfect boot, removing power while running yields a perfect boot.

I'm working on a very strange problem for a client and I think I've hit a brick wall. In a nutshell, when the system is booted up all indications are normal until the GUI starts. I briefly get an hourglass on a black background (it's normally blue) and then just a black screen with a corrupt line of randomness across the top of the screen. The weird part is that this ONLY happens after the system is shut down and turned off.

If I kill power after I get the corrupt desktop, it will boot into KDE just fine. Also, if I reboot instead of shutdown it will boot correctly.

For now, I've told them to boot up until it freezes/corrupts video and then perform an alt+SysRq+REISUB to reboot into a usable system. After that it works as expected, so they basically just have to start up and then reboot if they ever turn the equipment off.

The equipment rack has an identical redundant computer drawer as a ready spare, complete with a seperate hard disk and all. One hard drive came pre-loaded from the manufacturer and the other was loaded with the same software by the client from media provided by the manufacturer. I've swapped hard drives with no change and the client has reported swapping the entire computer with the ready spare with the same result.

The problem reportedly only surfaced a few weeks ago, but of course they can't think of anything that "happened" a few weeks ago. This is all new equipment less than a year old, but it may have been sitting in a warehouse for a few years before being installed.

General :: Migrating From WIN7 To Mandrake And NTFS To EXT3 Without Backing Up?

Jun 6, 2010

Im currently using windows 7 and I want to shift for Linux. So i thought to start from Mandrake-free. My current filesystem is NTFS which full of windows extension documents. Those capacity is almost 200GB.but im not in a position to backup everything. i got to know from forums that linux perform well in ext3 file system. so i wish to go for ext3. is there any ways to shift FROM,win7 TO mandrake AND
ntfs TO ext3 WITHOUT BACKING UP CURRENT DOCUMENTS ASWEL AS WITHOUT LOOSING ANY OF MY WINDOWS BASED DOCUMENTS.? and i got to know that in a single harddrive(eg 250GB), Its not good for the harddisk to have different type of partitions (eg 50gb of ext3 and 200gb of NTFS). if i used like this will my harddisk got crashed? because this happened to me 4 years ago when i was trying to install winXp(in ntfs) and Redhat(in ext2) in the same hardisk. i was working initially. but was in 2 days that HDD got crashed.

General :: F3 - F5 Keys Incorrectly Behaving As Audio Keys / Remap Them To Original Meaning?

Apr 17, 2010

I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. They don't respond to anything and, when I tried using F5 on Emacs, it said <XF86AudioNext> is undefined, so I guess it's a weird mapping problem.

Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?

Server :: Setup A Simple File Server With Mandrake 10.0?

Jul 19, 2010

Gentlemen/Ladies; I checked the existing information on this site and found that it is pretty widespread and confusing to me. I am a Linux Newbie so please be patient. I use Mandriva Linux 10.0 and want to setup a simple file server. I also want to connect a Windows XP computer to access files on the Linux server. I have a spare router I can use. My ultimate goal is to learn MySQL and PHP programming; I am pursuing a Web Development curriculum at a local University but am just starting out.

Am I making sense and can I do it with the equipment I have? Can you point me to some resources, documents, etc. I can use to accomplish this?

Ubuntu :: Never Get Keys From Keyserver?

Feb 5, 2010

I try to import a key from a keyserver when I add a repository to software sources, it just tries forever and times out. For instance, following the instructions here: [URL]... to add the key "CE49EC21" for the ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable. Whether I do it in the terminal:

Code:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys CE49EC21 or by clicking the link on their page, I get nowhere. I've had this problem with other keys from keyserver.ubuntu.com too.

It suddenly occurred to me today that maybe my router is the problem. It has a draconian firewall built in. (For instance, it won't allow incoming bittorrent traffic without me explicitly opening ports.) So maybe, since I'm trying to receive a key, it's preventing the key from coming in? Does anyone know why I'm having this problem getting keys?

Ubuntu :: Rsync - Ssh - Pgp Keys ?

May 15, 2010

I setup keyed ssh between two of my computers on my lan. It was working great. I used Ubuntu's Passwords and Encryption Keys tool to generate the key.

Yesterday I tried rsync'ing a grip of files to the ssh server and couldn't get it to work, I figured I was just messing the rsync command up. Today I just tried to log in using ssh and it just hangs there after I type the ssh command.

With verbosity on it stops at checking the blacklist file. Does this mean it decided my key is one of the badly generated ones? Why would it decide this now I thought it was supposed to catch that when generating the key.

Also I just checked that file it's trying to check doesn't even exist. Should it?

I posted this in Networks but have had little luck in that forum lately...I haven't been able to connect via ssh to my media server at home. It's running Karmic (non-server version) and has sshd installed. I generated a rsa and dsa key pair and added them to the server in .ssh/authorized_keys and .ssh/authorized_keys2 by use ofcat key >> .ssh/authorized_keys(2)Changed sshd_config to only accept Keys and kept port 22, since I will port forward through router and make firewall exception down the line.I made an account on the server with the same name as my laptop. Ubuntu :: How To Map Multimedia Keys In KDE

Jul 7, 2011

So I have a very simple problem, or rather I thought it was going to be simple. I have a keyboard with some multimedia buttons. They are the standard ones, (Home, Browser, New Document, etc.) but at the moment they don't do anything. I would like to set it up so that Home executes 'dolphin ~', Browser opens Firefox, New Document opens Libre Office.

This was all very straight-forward in GNOME but I can't figure out how to in KDE (I am a relative newcomer to KDE). I went to System Settings->Shortcuts and Gestures and played around for awhile but to no avail . I've also tried DuckDuckGo-ing.
