Server :: LVM Repair Of Working Disk With Corrupted But Known Partition Structure?

Sep 8, 2010

I have a hard drive where one partition is used as part of a logical volume (LV) using LVM. The partition table is corrupted and prevents the partitions from showing as devices in /dev/. The corruption prevents the logical volume from coming on-line b/c LVM cannot find the part on the corrupted disk. I (am pretty sure) I know the block offsets and lengths for each partition on the disk but do not want to write to the disk in case I am wrong.

How do I go about recovering the logical volume in this scenario?

Ubuntu :: Recovering Encrypted Data From Corrupted Partition

Jul 20, 2011

I recently suffered a hard disk failure, meaning I had to replace the faulty device. After attempting to mount the old faulty hard drive using and external caddy, I got the following message... Unable to mount 144 GB Filesystem Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb5, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so

I'd like to attempt to recover what I can from my /home directory but unfortunately I use encryption (although I do actually know my pass phrase). What procedures and software can I use to try and recover data from this drive?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Cannot Copy Files Between Servers - Data Gets Corrupted

Apr 13, 2011

I am attempting to copy files from one server to an external USB drive on a second server. Both servers are running custom RedHat Linux, kernel 2.6. Both are setup as Check Point SecurePlatform (one is a log server and the other a management server). I am trying to archive files from one (HP DL380 G5) to the second (HP DL380 G6). I am not able to archive directly to the external usb drive when connected to the HP DL380 G5 (data gets corrupted and switches to read-only access). The external USB drive has no issues when connected to the HP DL380 G6 server, thus my reason for trying to copy the files across servers.

When I attempt to use scp to copy files between the server, I am prompted for the password. Once entered the debug shows the authentication is successful, but then no files are copied (see log below). I have tried searching for potential answers, but none have panned out. Unfortunately I can't yet post the actual scp debug log output as some of the text is viewed as a URL and not yet allowed for me. I have changed all the atsign symbols to '(a)' to avoid the URL inference.

Output log from scp attempt follows:

Ubuntu :: Format Disk With Corrupted Partitions?

Aug 9, 2010

I got a 40GB seagate HDD which has got through some unsuccessful windows and linux installations and now all the partition tables are corrupted... I tried to format with System>Administration>DiskUtility but it gives this error when I'm do: Error creating partition table: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sdb: Input/output error gParted was not even useful since it didn't not even detected the drive...

Isn't there any simple way to format the crap from the Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD? I believe that on windows, there wouldn't be that problem since the "format c:" crap just format the drive without asking questions. All I want to do is to format the drive so I can create partitions later. Also, I have only access to the live CD and I don't have any Diskette drive installed.. I believe we now live in a world where this crap isn't needed to fix a computer.

General :: 2TB HDD And Badblocks ?

Jun 18, 2010

Not sure where else to put this, but has anyone else ran the badblocks command on a 2TB drive? I've been running it as follows:

badblocks -wvs /dev/sda

This is a brand new drive and apparently the "Testing with pattern" stage went by pretty quick, however now I'm on the "Reading and comparing" stage and it's taking forever. Every so often it lists off a rather large number followed by the time elapsed.

At the same time I'm running badblocks on an older 200GB drive with bad sectors and it's already on the 2nd pass with no similar listing as the new drive. According to dmesg I'm getting these messages:

Ubuntu :: Corrupted Partition On Hard Disk - Invalid Argument

May 11, 2011

Basically, I just installed Ubuntu over Windows Vista because I was getting fed up with the performance on it. During install I set up a partition, one for Ubuntu and one for data. However, my second, larger partition gives this error when I try to mount it...
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 12: Failed to read last sector (976764927): Invalid argument

Hints: Either the volume is a RAID/LDM but it wasn't setup yet,
or it was not setup correctly (e.g. by not using mdadm --build ...),
or a wrong device is tried to be mounted,
or the partition table is corrupt (partition is smaller than NTFS),
or the NTFS boot sector is corrupt (NTFS size is not valid).
Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/sda1' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?

Ubuntu :: Badblocks Reading Drive Too Quickly?

Sep 11, 2010

I'm running badblocks on some new disk drives just to be safe before my return period expires. I'm running the command

Code: sudo badblocks -b 4096 -p 4 -c 65536 -w -s /dev/sdb1 on an empty partition taking up the entire device. I am getting the following output:

[Code]...

1) When it gets to the "reading and comparing" phase, it seems to complete in <1s. I see other posts where people say this takes them as long as it took to write to the drive. I don't see any mention of this being quick, so I'm just afraid that badblocks is being denied read access or something.. Anyone familiar with this behaviour?

2) Obviously since it is on a sixth pass, badblocks thought that it found new bad blocks on the second pass (or later). When I check SMART, though, the drive has not re-allocated anything (despite having plenty of spares)... Doesn't this seem odd? Is there some reason why the disk would not step in upon a write fail? In fact, I thought a write fail should be transparent... Which makes me wonder if question 1 (above) is causing this...

Fedora :: Slow Working And Hanging The System Unreasonably?

Dec 9, 2009

I installed Fedora 12, 64 bit on my Dell Latitude D820 laptop with Core2 Duo processor(7200 speed) and 2 gigabyte Memory.

I have updated the yum. I have enabled the rpm repositories.

It is very weird that my system suddenly works very slowly and hangs. every time I login after a while the CPU usage goes up to the end with out any reason!

Before this I had installed Fedora 12, 32 bit and I had the exact same problem.

I have installed Fedora 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 on my laptop before and I had non of these problems with them.

The interesting point is that after hanging my system works constantly slow even when I restart my system! It is slow even in booting the BIOS and start up and choosing the kernel page!

The only remedy to get rid of the slow working for a while is to Shut down the system completely and turn it on again. Restarting do not make it work normally just shutting down makes it normal for a while.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Mouse Randomly Stops Working Inside Applications?

Jul 10, 2011

This happens randomly after a reboot: I can move the mouse cursor and it works perfectly only on the Unity sidebar or whatever it's called. I can fire up applications, but once they're up they completely ignore any clicks or mouse movements (the main menu does not appear on the top bar if I move the cursor in the location that usually makes it appear). They only recognise a click on the close/iconize/maximize buttons.

The mouse works: as I said I can move the cursor and it recognises clicks on the sidebar and the window control buttons; plus, it's connected via a KVM switch both to the Linux box and to a Windows box (from which I'm writing this) and in Windows perfectly. The pattern used to be this: usually while running Firefox, the mouse and keyboard stop responding, and sometimes the whole desktop graphics become corrupted. I can Alt+F1 and go to a text-mode console, but nothing short of a reboot "fixes" things. After the reboot, about two times out of five everything works, three times out of five I get the situation described above.

For the last few hours or so, however, no amount of rebooting and sacrificing goats to the gods protecting sociopaths and Linux software developers have been able to restore mouse functionality. I click on my username on the login windowhere it works perfectly), enter the password and then only the Unity sidebar works: again, the mouse cursor moves, only clicks (right and left) are ignored, as are hotspots. In ubuntu classic there is no place where I can click and launch applications, btw - once I get in I'm basically blocked and can't do anything

Hardware :: Fedora 11 RAID 1 - Disk Failure - Boot From The Single Working Disk?

Oct 16, 2009

my Fedora 11 system is not starting anylonger. It stops with the message:

Code:

VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem on dev dm-0

The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).

Ubuntu Installation :: Migrate Working Single Disk System To Existing RAID Array Using Disk UUIDs

Aug 1, 2010

I had done a new lucid install to a 1 TB RAID 1 array using the alternate CD a few weeks back. I messed up that system trying to some hardware working that lucid doesn't have drivers for yet, so I gave up on it and reinstalled to a single 80 GB disk that I now want to move over to the RAID array.

I moved all of the existing files on the array to a single folder, then copied all of the folders from the 80 GB disk over to the array with permissions and symlinks (minus the contents of /proc and /sys, which I created empty).

These are the commands I used:

Quote:

p -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /b*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /d*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /e*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /h*

[Code]....

I tried to change fstab to use the 689a... for root, but when I try to boot, it's still trying to open /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d...

So then I booted from the single disk again and chrooted into the array, then ran update-initramfs -u. I got 3 "grep: /proc/modules: No such file or directory" errors, and "cat: /proc/cmdline: No such file or directory"- so I created directory /proc/modules, created an empty file /proc/cmdline, and ran the initramfs update again. Then I tried to shut down, which hung (probably because I was doing all of this from a terminal window in Gnome), so I killed the power after a couple of minutes.

It's still trying to use /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d... to boot.

What am I missing? I assume I just have to change the UUID to mount as root, but I don't know how.

Ubuntu :: Data Recovery On My Broken Disk

Mar 22, 2010

A while ago my harddrive kinda failed. I didnt notice untill I got "Grub error 17" one time when I was trying to boot my computer. The problem is not really that I couldnt log on to my computer, but rather that I have alot of important information on the computer I would hate to lose. At the time I used Ubuntu 8.04 and had reiserfs filesystem on the computer. I bought a new computer and decided to wait untill I could rescue the data before doing to much dmg to it. But I dont really remember if I tried something to fix it before I realised that it was the harddrive and bad sectors that made me get gruberror 17. Hopefully I didnt do anything.

Anyway. Now today I had some extra time, so I decided to dive in. I booted from a linux mint disk and used ddrescue to transfer all the rawdata over the network to an image file laying on an ext4 drive. Once there I used reiserfsck to try and repair the filesystem. After that i mounted the image file and tried to access the files. Thats where the probelms started. I could see the whole treestructure of the harddrive and everything seemed ok, but when i tried to open the files, none of the pictures, documents and so on could be opend, and when I tried to open stuff like MP3 files they played quite strange. Videofiles was really messy, kept changing resolution and was almost always just gray and green squares on the screen. I decided to use ddrescue and move the files from the image file and on to a clean disk. So when I was done I could mount the filesystem on the new disk, but with the same resault, so I did reiserfsck again, and when that didnt help I did a buildtree also. Still with the same resault. So I decided to investigate the data abit. Opening files at random trying to understand what had hapend. And I saw that some MP3 files (the easiest to open) was some kind of mixing between several difrent mp3 files. Some files wasnt even in the same folder, so it was probably just that the file pointer was pointing at the wrong data on the disk. I dont know how that works really, so I dont know how to go on.

So now to the question. How do I get the data back? Have I done something wrong, can I redo somethig? I still have the broken disk and can take data from it once again, but I want to wait to do that untill I really know what to do. I also still have the image file, and the disk with the copied data. I have a ubuntu 9.10 system at my disposal atm.
