I am looking at satellite navigation (for the car) and wonder which one (TomTom, Garmin etc.) is easiest to update with Linux. I assume I would want to update maps, speed cameras etc. every few months. Also which system offers the most free services? I don't want to find I have to pay extra for this that and the other; I just want a one-off cost that includes the basics/most common services.

The image was made way back in 2007, and obviously it hasn't been updated.The version is VERY minimal, it doesn't even have all the packages from A, but I can get any I want and install as I wish.Is there an easy way to update 12 to 12.2? Going to 13 is probably out of the question without a clean install over a network and doing it remotely, which is probably beyond my capabilities.I can't mess with the kernel unfortunately, but I can install practically any packages.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've never quite understood why they won't like Firefox just update on it's own. Instead it appears all of the FF updates always have to come through the update manager. 3.6.4 has been out since Tuesday and while I can go to the FF website and grab the tar of the new version I'd rather you know just upgrade my existing version like I've already easily done in Windows.
Seriously if this was a security flaw update and we had to wait this long you'd think people would be up in arms. Luckly 3.6.4 is mainly just extra functionality.
Still am I just left at the mercy of whenever it appears in the update stream or is there an easy way to update what I already have installed verses having two versions of FF?
I just upgraded my ubuntu to 10.10 and discovered that the navigation keys in the 'less' utility are not working anymore. Both the cursor keys and the page keys are just echoed as key codes:

This is really nasty - moreover, this issue seems to be too difficult to google (at least for me) beause 'less' is not a very good keyword to search for

I am using Tiny Menu extension on my firefox so that I have to disable Navigation toolbar. I do so but everytime when I reopen the firefox I see that it is active again. What can I do? I am usinng firefox 3.6.3 on my ubuntu 10.04 machine(upgraded from 9.10).

I'd like to navigate back and forth between the two main windows with a simple keyboard action such as TAB, i.e. tabbing back and forth as I copy files from one directory to another. How could I set that up? I looked under Dolphin shortcuts but wasn't able to configure this action.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. The installation process seems to be perfect. However, after I reboot, I can only see my previous desktop. But all the side bars are gone. The so-called Unity tools (sounds like Mac Dock) are not present at all. Now the only thing I can do is click my mouse on the desktop, open a terminal by right click, play things that have link on my desktop... I even cannot find the option to reboot or start Firefox.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Opensue 11.4 (gnome-desktop) on my machine. The problem is that, if I open a database-form with libreoffice base, no navigation-bar appeares. The option "navigation" from the view-menu is not active. The database uses the built-in HSQLDB in single user mode. Navigation via libreoffice-basic is possible and I can see the first record - just it is not possible to navigate manually.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI receive a lot of emails daily, and with the ever-growing amount of maildirs I'm in need to structure/optimize the browsing in mutt. My maildirs follow this naming scheme: .domain.category.sub_category
My goal is to break domain, category and sub_category into nested levels when browsing through the mailboxes. This is sort of achieved through the use of imap. But I stumble upon a few snags, so my questions are:
Is this nested mailboxes view possible by directly accessing ~/Mail and not using IMAP?
E.g. set folder="~/Mail" and set spoolfile="~/Mail/.INBOX"
When I start mutt I'm presented with all mailboxes available, which is what I want to get away from. I want to get directed directly into my default/main inbox like I do when accessing ~/Mail directly. How?
When hitting c (a defined macro, see configuration below) I again get presented with all the mailboxes available, and not the mailboxes at the current browsing level, e.g. mailboxes containing a specific category. To get this view I need to hit c+TAB. I've solved this by adding a <tab> to the c macro's. When finally getting mutt to present me mailboxes in nested levels they are only enumerated and not annotated with N, indicating new mail, or even better, total number of new mails in or under a folder. I know it's possible to define format on the different views, but is there one for this view? If so, which?

View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst of all, this is not famous problem, which solves by unchecking "Allow to control the pointer using the keyboard". My numpad navigation does not work in console under X. Nor in Konsole/KDE/Kubuntu (9.10), nor in Console/Gnome/Ubuntu (9.04). It works in graphics applications. It works in system console in text mode (Ctrl+Alt+F1..6) too. But in Konsole I can't navigate cursor by numpad arrows in Midnight Commander or text editors. When NumLock is on - the numbers are typed. But when it off, nothing happens - cursor doesn't move. The same reaction from Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys on numpad.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my systems. In the file browser or any internet browser, if I click on back, forward or up, nothing happens. I stays on the current page/location. Even if goes back, sometimes, it again comes back automatically to current page/location. I can navigate using keyboard but not with mouse.
System Configuration:
Processor: Core 2 Quad 2.5 GHz

As a preface, this is not an F7 carat mode problem.Firefox 3.6.8 in Lucid no longer is navigable with the keyboard.Up/Down arrows, PgUp/PgDown, Home/End, when the page is in focus, fail to scroll the window. TAB fails to switch between form fields on the page and in the toolbar (Example: Previously, CTRL-L to go to URL field then TAB into the search field would work. Now the CTRL-L works but TAB has no effect.)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have set up an OpenOffice (3.2) Base database - tables, mainly, and a few queries. The main table contains about 9000 rows and around 50 fields and there is a second table of 1900 rows and 20 fields and a few other tables with either fewer rows or many fewer fields. The primary key on the main table is a single text field. The .odb file is 4.4Mb. There are no Forms or Reports; the idea at the moment is that I enter data using OO's Table data view. I see that I have an embedded HSQL database and I cannot change dit>Database>Properties because it is greyed out.
Opening the database is reasonably quick (about 5 sec) but then when I want to look at any but the smallest of tables (in data Table view) it is very slow (15 sec on the main table) to display the first group of rows. When I want to move to show a different record it takes just as long to display the new set of rows. It makes no difference whether the new set of records is adjacent (in terms of record order) or a long way off. I need to speed this up x3 or more or I will have to abandon Base as impractical to use.
On the OO Forum some posts talk of separating the database from the engine and others of increasing the cache size. I can't do the latter as access is via the greyed out option and I can't find any instructions for the former. I'm not convinced these would have much effect anyway.
Loading up gedit (as an example) I am unable to navigate reliably using keyboard navigation controls with the new Unity interface. There are times when left/right will work within a document but up/down will not. After a reboot left/top/right will work but down will not unless you physically click on the position you would like the cursor. I'm guessing unity unity is stealing these keys but not releasing them back to the applications?

And at [URL] All of the nav button in yellow across the top have very blurred text, as well as most of the photos of products on their pages have jagged edges. In Windows these things are crystal clear--no blurring, no jagged edges.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 inside my copy of Windows. When I boot my laptop, I have the option to either boot in Windows or Ubuntu. When I boot in Ubuntu, I get the login screen all OK. But when the screen loads up, it is missing the top and left hand side navigation bars. It then appears to be trying to refresh itself (unsuccessfully) as after about 30 seconds the screen goes black and then the wallpaper image will come back, still without the navigation bars. This keeps on happening until I reboot the machine. The only way I can get the screen to reboot OK is to run the repair option on boot up.
I have notices that after the above has taken place and I have finally got the system to boot all OK by running the repair option, the system will not connect to my mobile broadband via the USB dongle. Not sure if they are related, but at this point they seem to be.
Red Hat Network Satellite?? is there is one for CentOS?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've tried unsuccessfully to install Ubuntu 10.04 (the latest edition as of this date) on my Toshiba satellite a75 running XP Home, trying all the things detailed below. All my attempts were with the desktop edition. My large-screen laptop is more like a desktop than like a netbook.
1. Since I didn't see a checksum on the site, I downloaded the iso file twice, and compared them with a Windows utility the iso files were the same, so I assume they are valid.
2. I thoroughly checked my RAM and 2 hard drives on which I tried the install, both before and after the failed installations, using the manufacturer's "advanced" utility and also another drive utility which shows SMART values. All the hardware seems very healthy.
3. When burning the CD, I selected the option to verify the CD - the CD's match the iso files.
4. First I tried doing a full install on a spare drive (which I put inside the laptop), i.e. installing Ubuntu by itself on the drive, without Windows. The install seemed to go fine. After reaching 100%, a dialog appeared saying something like 'click to restart'. After clicking, the CD automatically ejected and I got a screenful of errors something like:

init plymouth main process killed by BUS signal
init: plymouth-splash main process (21554) terminated with status 1.
Note: in one attempt, it also said something like "atiixa codec reset timeout" (this may be misspelled). When I rebooted, then it got to the login screen, but then a few seconds later went into 'standby' mode. Usually on this laptop, when the power button is pushed in standby mode, then it boots up, but in this case it was stuck. I had to force the power off.
5. I tried booting up several times, then reburned the CD and tried again. Same story.
6. Someone said sr0 may be the cd drive. I thought perhaps the cd was being ejected too early, so I tried to hold the tray in to keep it from ejecting (that doesn't harm my tray). Same results.
7. I tried installing Ubuntu alongside my existing system (this is a different hard drive). Same story: everything seemed fine until login, then it immediately got stuck in standby mode. I don't know if it displayed the screenful of error messages, since I was out of the room.
8. I tried running from the CD. This worked, except that when I tried to import contacts into Evolution, Evolution (but not Ubuntu) crashed. On terminating the session, I again got a similar screenful of error messages. Don't recall whether the CD had automatically ejected before that.
9. I emailed the person who maintains a page in the Ubuntu community on testing the Satellite A75. The page indicates a few problems, but he said that basically Ubuntu ran on that model--nothing like the problems I had.
10. I tried running from a USB flash drive. After accessing the boot selection menu and selecting something like "external drive", the system pondered for a while, then said "PXE-2.0 No boot file name received", and booted into XP. Tried this with two different flash drives.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 13 (KDE) version: Linux version 2.6.33.5-124.fc13.i686.PAE latptop: toshiba satellite C650 - intel core i3 I have few problem, one of them is the power management it seems the power management can't see the battery therefore not battery status. power profile isn;t working. after shutting down the system, the computer stays on (screen, hdd ..etc) until I press the "turn on button". also I cant change the screen brightness using power management..its fixed.I dont know whats the problem and i dont know how to fix it.

Will it be very difficult to setup in opensuse 11.3? Any thoughts on the ease of this whole idea? (The area I live in has no cable, no DSL and even cellphone service is so limited I have to walk around in 4 acres to find a spot to get a signal, hence my wanting to move to satellite internet).
