For an older computer that won't boot off USB (like the live knoppix/ubuntu, etc) , is it possible to have it boot off of a special CD that will tell it to run the operating system off an attached USB thumbdrive?
View 2 RepliesI am having trouble botoing into live system. Lubuntu 11.04 boots to command line. I am trying to boot from a CD at computer that is currently running Ubuntu and Xubuntu 10.04. I can see the dots on loading and also on shutdown but i can't start the X.Computer is an Old compaq presario 731EA, S3 graphics card with 256 MB total ram (32MB goes to graphics card). I tried nomodeset but same thing happens.

She clicked yes to install upgrades, but at some point during this process the machine froze. She restarted, and I haven't been able to successfully boot since then. the final screen when trying to boot from the hard drive reads:

I'm slowly getting the hang of Ubuntu. By now I know enough that a Live CD can fix most problems. So that's where I went after doing several searches about the error messages that were appearing. The menu screen works, but I can't get it to boot into the "Try ubuntu" mode. I tried changing the boot parameters to no avail. As the boot tries to load I can see a line by line report of errors- some are I/O errors and are in white, but many were in red, which seems bad from my mostly ignorant perspective. I saw lots of SQUASHFS errors among other things. I took a snapshot of the screen that was displayed when the boot failed- it's attached to this post (lots and lots of text to be typed otherwise). The reason I know it failed is because I've tried a half dozen times with the same exact result- once I let it sit for an hour+ just to make sure it was really frozen (a bit optimistic).
Relevant info: Ubuntu is running on a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I think it's version 9, but could be 10. The Live CD I'm using is version 10 burned 1/4/2011. I'd be thrilled to hear any suggestions that folks might have.
I have been frustrated attempting to get Grub2 to boot a Debian Live system from hard disk. Have set aside a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 to contain the Debian Live and some other recovery tools. I actually have them all working from a 4gb USB stick successfully, but getting it to work on my HDD has proved challenging. On USB, I have PartedMagic, Gparted, Grml, and of course my standard 6.01 Squeeze. I have also managed to get the Debian Live booting from that USB stick. Very slick.
However, I can NOT get Debian Live to boot from my HDD; altho all of the others above boot fine. Have tried it two ways - one using an iSO image, which is how it is done on my USB stick. The other attempt is to copy the entire contents of the ISO to a directory.
Here are my directory structures:
debian_live_gnome_squeeze_i386- contains the following: debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso initrd.gz initrd.img vmlinuz which is how it is laid out on my USB stick debian_live - contains the files from the ISO image The error I get is something like "panic unable to find live filesystem" My grub.cfg snippet for the two methods I have tried - the 2nd menuentry is similar to how it works on the USB stick.

Probly don't really need to get it working since PartedMagic can do almost everything I need for recovery and I can use the USB for reinstall or whatever else.
I am researching how to make an effective backup on Ubuntu Server. This server will have Vsftp, VPN, Samba stuff , many other added packages +many printers, many users + data. I know I can use tar for the data /u no problem. 1. I was testing tar on the /home directory on a few user directories. I then created a new directory and did a restore of the users directories on it. I noticed the /home/user owner and group were root. The files in each directory remained the same. This gave me concern. If I had a crash and had to restore these to a new HD. I would have to change these, what else would I need to change? 2. Since I have many config files, how do I back up them? I know I can do a dump, but then users shouldn't be on the system. The system files will change as they add users, printers, etc, and asking users to not work, is not really an option while dump is running. I thought I could do a tar on whole system. (cron late at night .. not as many users) Then in event of crash of HD.
1. Boot from live cd
2. format the new drive
3. tar back in the whole system
Will this work right? Is there something I am missing?
I've made a Live CD of version 10.04 on a machine running 10.04 (amd64). The disk boots fine on a 2nd machine but does not boot on the machine that created it. The CD/DVD is new and works for other things so I don't think it is this. The Live CD gets to the ISOLINUX screen but instead of "Loading" the screen goes blank and the system shuts down. I've tried everything I can think of (the disk works fine on another machine).

I was trying to figure out how to use Synaptic to fix some dependancy errors I was getting, and set it to remove a certain package. It said it had to remove other packages as well to do this, well that ended up being Gnome and a whole bunch of other stuff. Silly me.So I was alright without having Gnome and went back to writing simple c++ from this book. I wrote a program to output a range of numbers and ran it but had written it wrong, so it would have ran on for hours. So I just killed the power and tried to start the comp again.
This time after the Dell boot screen it would tell me my system battery was low and strike F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup. Hit F1 and Im told that a file wasnt found and then it goes to the Ubuntu loading screen (The logo and some dots underneath) and then a black screen. Nothing else.I figured I needed to reintall and dont have any CDs so tried to make a live CD and this time when I try to boot from USB device get a "Missing Operating System" error.Its set to boot from USB device before harddrive. Need to know what to do to install again/recover old install.

I finally got this thing exactly how I want it with all sorts of tools,... I would like to know how to make a live install cd so I can share with others and put on other computers.. Like be a as clear and specific as you can.. should I leave the install file there on the main desktop too?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got BT's repo's set and ready to install, tho I haven't installed them all just yet cause I not wanna crash the system, so I guess what I am asking has anyone sucecfully done this and what are the specific risks here. I have uploaded crunch and that works fine if I do it manually from the command line. the kernal seems to be update-able as well to BT's Kernal, I am not sure if I should do this or not in fear it might crash the Ubuntu system somehow. I guess what I might do next is install everything but the Kernal and install the executable links to the drop down menu by hand per the menu structure.
What I would ideally want is to have all the functionality of BT in Ubuntu which is pretty close to where I am at. Also, when I am done I want to make a live CD of this system so that I not have to do this ever again as it is very time consuming. What program would be used for that? Would any of my user data transfere? I don't want my user data to be transferred to the live CD just the raw system data etc. Anyone done this and would like to chat via skype? that would be best, but I'll take any help I can get at this point. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 for all this.
I was playing a bit with a 10.04 live cd and persistence on a small usb stick. I did that on a HP Probook 4510s with windows 7 installed. Testing the persistence, I changed the desktop background and tried to install a small package, about 14MB extra space was reported to be used. My usb stick is 512mb. Suddenly it says there's no more space. After that I rebooted with persistence and half way through loading it stopped saying there's no more space, again. I decided to call it quits and reboot it back to win 7, but doing that just left me with the message "missing operating system". I have no clue as to how it happened, since I did nothing with the hard drive.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to use the live cd (Linux mint 9) to do a repair install on my system, but when I start, it says that it has detected another instance of linux and this must be removed before I can continue. I don't want to do this as I have a lot of data on this system and I don't want to lose it. The error occurred when I did a dist-upgrade and installed new kernels. Before I installed the kernels, a message came up saying the following packages are already installed but are no longer required. Use apt-get autoremove to remove them. I did this and now when I boot, I get as far as the five changing dots on the screen and it just stays there. I went into command line and ran apt-get mint-meta-main mint-meta-gnome, and at the end it came up with problem with /etc/utilities/desktop.

View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday I did follow exactly the description how to build a live system on a USB Stick with the additional second partition for the data of Live_USB_stick. So far I had success, as my Netbook did start booting and loaded the OpenSUSE 11.2. Then I rebooted the Netbook and it never again comes up with the 11.2. It looks as if it would stop somewhere at starting the graphical system, but I'm not sure.
Today, second try, I created the USB stick with the 11.2 Live System only (no second partition). My Netbook starts booting and shows the 11.2 system successfully, also further boots are the same successful. Then having created the Live system with the second partition again, results in a un-bootable Netbook again (not even the first time it comes up).
What I wonder when I did check the USB partitions: the one (sdg1) with the Live-CD can be mounted and the content is readable. The second one (sdg2) cannot be mounted; shouldn't it be mountable and shouldn't it be formated with a file system? Did anyone have some experience on this? Or, at least, the people having a running persistent live system, what does the partition them show up?
I am too stupid to run a live Linux on a Macbook air. I used both, an openSUSE 11.3-KDE Live-CD and a Live-USB key and tried several boot options.
(i) I held down "C" to boot from CD → didn't work. It's an Apple CD drive but came with an older Macbook air a few years ago.
(ii) Found the bootmenu by holding down the option (ALT) key. Neither Live-CD nor Live-USB were shown. You can only choose the harddrive (and available wireless networks).
(iii) "Command-Shift-Option-Delete" to boot from an external drive didn't work either. I assume my USB key is an external drive, right?
I don't want to install openSUSE on the mac I just want to run a live system from time to time. Therefore I want to bypass Boot Camp or rEFIt and that's probably why I am stuck here. I wonder, if I really have to setup one of them to boot into a live system? The wiki article "openSUSE on a Mac" is under review right now.

I just installed a new driver from the Realtek site for my wireless chip, and it broke my system. Ubuntu won't boot in normal mode or recovery mode, and I'm sincerely hoping beyond all hope that I can avoid reinstalling the system I just got working yesterday.
At my connection speed, it will take about two days to download all of the packages I use. Is there any way to get rid of this driver and restore my system back to how it was... about twenty minutes before I posted this, without booting in the system?
We have an old server running, and I decided to run fsck.ext3 -n on the disk to check it (while it was running). Turns out it reports lots of errors - not a good thing.
The weird thing is that when booting up a rescue cd and running fsck.ext3 on it, it says there are no problems with it. The filesystem is marked clean. Forcing a check with -f turns up nothing.
Now, when booting it from disk, fsck complains about an unclean file system that has not been checked for like 50000 days (obviously an error). Running e2fsck -n /dev/sda2 turns up errors again - not necessarily the same ones as the last time.
This makes me wonder: Can running e2fsck on a mounted file system cause errors? I ran with -n which is not supposed to do anything, just doing a read-only check. On the other hand, I heard checking a live file system might throw erros since the files being checked might change while bign checked, thus causing false positives.
Can the old version of e2fstools (1.38, approx 2005) mean non-existing errors are shown? Both the rescue cd and the system use this version.
In any case - why would the file system report errors on boot-up when the rescue cd just said it was ok? It should have been marked clean by now.
For laughs, I shut down the system and booted Knoppix which has a quite recent version (1.41.12, May 2010) of e2fstools. It showed no errors on the file system.
What do you think - are there errors or not on the file system?
The system is actually running Suse, but this is not about Suse specific things - just general Linux tools. And I use Ubuntu personally.
I am new to linux, but need to do the following:
1.) Use a basic ubuntu 9.04 distro
2.) On boot run an existing .sh script
I would like to make a thumbdrive with a live cd version that will auto run to desktop and execute the .sh script. I am looking for pointers on accomplishing this. I have found ways to get the live cd to run on USB, but it still involves clicking the "run without changing your system link" and I cannot figure out how to run the script on start up.
Im using the System Rescue live cd to try and Clamscan a partition on my internal HD, but I cant mount /dev/sda3 (my home partition).

i recently used unetbootin to install ubuntu 10.04 on my formatted sandisk cruzer 4gb... i had no errors in the installation, but when i boot from usb it says missing operating system..
