We have a server at a friends house with a hard disk that's filling up so he picked up another hard drive.
My question is.. can I install it and then configure it so to the user it seems transparent and they just see the extra space all on one drive/directory? (From Windows)
It's running centos 5 with samba ... with EXT3.. and I don't believe it's using LVM.
I want to make a transparent squid proxy server in centos. The squid proxy version is 2.6 stable. I made a normal squid server but want to make it transparent so that users do not need to enter the proxy settings in web browser. Even i searched about this on google but not getting it properly.I have two lan cards on centos system. ETH1 used for LAN and ETH2 used for WAN. And in this squid.conf i written "http_port 172.16.31.1:3128 transparent" and i also added a rule in iptables which is "iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3128" but still i have to enter proxy settings at client's web browser to use internet

I have been trying to install centos on my hp servers and when i get to partitions my hard drives the OS does not detect any harddrives. I have 4 scsi drives and i believe a intergrated smart array controller.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy karmic ubuntu studio will no longer boot. I believe I may have intermittent hard drive issues. I've backed up all my important files so I'm not extremely worried; however, I would like to try to get my setup bootable once more. I've reinstalled grub, and on trying to boot, I get the grub kernel selection. Regardless of what I choose, the system won't boot. I believe grub is alright, but something else is not. What else could I try to make it boot again? I've mounted the drive, chrooted to it, updated and upgraded, but it still won't boot. I may be doing that wrong, or there may be something else I need to do.

I have a hospital application written using a database called MSE. Now the provider of this application says they will only support tape because of the fact that this system is using a specialized backup system. Basically the data is housed on raw_data blocks. So what I am looking to do is create a way to USE the SAN to present the server with Hard Drives and be mounted as if it was a tape. Has anyone tried to do something like this before? If so how did you configure that. One solution that I thought would be to just Present a 2TB lun and carve up several partitions cut not create filesystems on them. Then just create a symlink everynight /dev/rmt0 and rotate out the partitions.

I have Slackware 12.2 installed on my computer, as well as a Windows Xp. I have a hard drive named '/fat-d', which is formatted to be 'fat' and is normally used under XP. This drive can also be accessed under Slackware, both as root and the normal user.I can not write to the directory '/fat-d' when I am not root, it is normal since 'ls -l' shows that its owner is root and other users have no permission to write. It is not listed in my fstab file and I mount it manually in nautilus (having to type a password). It is designated as /dev/sdb1 and /media/repo when it is mounted. Can I get cron to mount it and then add the password or do I have to add it to fstab?
So I just reinstalled OpenSUSE 11.2 and I went from having 20-30 mbps speed to and from my 1 tb usb ntfs external hard drive to having about 1 mbps transfer speeds now. Is there any suggestions for how I can fix this? I know it can go faster, I just need to figure out how. and would setting acpi=off at boot affect this?

Which directories could be excluded ? Does swap need to be turned off ? I would like to make incremental backups on a separate partition of the same hard drive. But from what I have been reading, rsync is better becasue it will basically mirror your hard drive, thus being able to run the cloned software from the new hard drive. My problem is I do not know what is the best commands or even the basic commands to use in rsync. I am trying to make an image from a external hard drive to a usb drive. That way my chances of messing up he original software is not as risky becasue I'll just restore the image onto another hard drive. I had a script that would connect using smbmount with my normal user account and then mirror my home folder to the external network attached hard drive with rsync. I noticed my hard drive had a key next to its name but could not find information regarding it online. I proceeded to unmount the drive and made 2 partitions. However, it game me an error saying it couldnt make the partitions. I turned my computer off thinking i would get back to trying tomorrow. Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. Back in 2007-2008, I was MS server admin/comm tech. I saw a building running MS server for user computers and Red Hat 9 as a main system server. MS sever was a just one of the user accounts of Linux server. When I log in to Linux, I could see log menu to access MS server. How could somebody make this creative thing?I'm now a Network engineer because working with CISCO router and switch is easier than working as programmer or server admin. I want to simulate (in a very rough way) scanning through a poorly configured router or firewall. The easiest way I can think of to simulate this is to use a linux vmware image with two virtual nic cards to act as a firewall with the attacker on the outside network and a domain controller, web server, and database server on the inside network.
I would like to start students off with a firewall script that exposes everything on their internal network to the attacker. Is there an easy way to (mis)configure iptables to do this?. The model I'm trying to replicate is something like this. Attackers were on a 10.10.x.x network, defenders were on a 192.168.x.x network. As an attacker I could nmap 192.168.x.x and see every machine and every service on the defenders side even if they moved a service to an unexpected location. how I can implement a similar configuration using a linux image as firewalls/routers in vmware?

2)Is that possible to change the ugly boot icon?
I figured out how to make the border transparent, but in w7 Whole opera is transparent. How do i do that in ubuntu?
