Hardware :: How Does One Determine What KDE Is Running On PC?

Jan 4, 2010

How does one determine what KDE is running on a PC? Surely, there is a simple CLI command (or GUI) to determine that - but I don't know what it is..Something similar to "uname -a" that we use to find kernel version.

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Determine What Package I'm Running

Jun 3, 2010

I installed Apache by using the following command:

Code:
sudo apt-get install apache2
I later realized that there are two (or more versions) of Apache, MPM Worker (threadsafe) and Prefork. Since I'm trying to get both Tomcat and PHP working on the same system I need to know what version is installed of Apache, Worker or Prefork?

Looking in the package documentation, it said something about a virtual package... Looking inthe mods-enable directory, I don't see anything that indicates one or the other.

I'm also wondering if Tomcat integration can work with prefork?

Ubuntu :: Bash: Determine If Running In Terminal?

Jul 10, 2010

I'm writing a bash script to move files around based on various bits of metadata. For a few reasons, this script will be run regularly both from the terminal, and from the nautilus-scripts folder ("graphically", if you will). What I'm stumped on is having the script defer outputs based on which mode the script is running in. For example, how can I have the script know whether to echo error statements, or pump them out to zenity based on the method of invocation?

So far I can only presume I have used the wrong terms to find how to determine which device the web cam is using.

What steps can one take to solve the problem?

Hardware :: Can't Boot, And Can't Determine?

Feb 4, 2010

I recently built a "new to me" computer and can't get it up and running. HDD's, DVDROM, Mem is all detected ok. But just won't boot linux for some reason.
Heres the setup
ASUS P4C800 w/P4 2.4Ghz
2GB RAM
Excelstor 160GB (IDE)
WB 80GB (IDE)
SONY DVDRW (SATA)
BFG (nvidia) R84512GSP video

Tried different combination's of which drive is mstr/slv boot order with and without the new memory(1bg of it) nothing seems to work. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 I can get to the main screen where you have the option of live/install. Once you need to get past that I get a blinking cursor on the top left of my screen...and thats it. I've tried letting it sit and makes no difference. This happens with every distro I've tried to boot, Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, they all crap out at the exact same spot, got be hardware right.

Programming :: Determine What CPU Thread Is On?

Jul 2, 2010

Is there a library/system call that will return to me what CPU core a thread of execution is running on? I've looked for a bit on the net already and also in /usr/include and couldn't find one.

getcpu() and sched_getcpu() are two that I found, but when I include the appropriate header files (linux/getcpu.h, and sys/sched.h respectively), gcc says getcpu.h doesn't exist and the linker complains it cannot find the implementation in sched.h.

I'm sure I'm doing something really stupid or overthinking...

What I am doing is running an OpenMP application and specifying a list of cpu cores to run on with GOMP_CPU_AFFINITY. I want to make sure that each core is getting the same number of threads.

**UPDATE**

It seems that this code works, but only with glibc >= 2.6, and my machine has 2.5:

Code:
#define _GNU_SOURCE
#include <stdio.h>
#include <utmpx.h>
int main( void )

General :: Determine Which Programs Are Using Swap / How Much

Apr 20, 2011

I'm interested in figuring out which programs on my machine are using swap, and how much each is using. I realize this can probably be done with top, but I am having trouble figuring how how.

What I've tried:

Start top
Press f (add column)
Press p (SWAP colum)

This adds a SWAP column, but the data doesn't seem to be correct. Top lists Firefox as using 582m of swap, but the header simultaneously reports that 0k of swap is being used.

Is there a better way to monitor swap usage?

Debian :: Sources.list - To Determine US Or UK?

I have created a custom debian netinst USB stick. It has the default UK repositories in the sources list, but people in the US also need to use the stick from time-to-time.

Would it be a bad idea to mix US and UK repositories in the sources.list? Would Debian be clever enough to pick up the best repo depending on where the user is using the OS from? Or would I need to be a bit clever and create some sort of script to deal with this. (I am avoiding non-free/experimental software).

How does your Fedora get an IP number? What IP numbers has your Fedora been assigned since it was installed (based on the logs you have)? What command did you run to determine the IP numbers? What command would you run to determine the number of times a user successfully used "su"? What command would you run to determine the number of times a user unsuccessfully used "su"? Having some issues with the file system as your Fedora boots up.
