General :: Write A Log File Of A User Interactive Process Using Tee ?
Sep 30, 2010
I want to write the sequence of operation of a user interactive process (Question asked by the process and answers user entered) in to a log file.
I used tee command, Precess1 | tee -a FileName
This write only the Question asked by the process. Does anybody know how to write the user inputs also to the same file, synchronized?

I want to simply mount an ext4 file-system onto a normal mount point in Ubuntu (/media/whereever), as read-writable for the current logged-in user, i.e. me.
I don't want to add anything into /etc/fstab, I just want to do it now, manually. I need super-user privileges to mount a device, but then only root can read-write that mount. I've tried various of the mount options, added it into fstab, but with no luck.

I have a few AWS instances (linux micro, fedora-like) that occasionally (4x every 24hours) trip a CloudWatch monitor for CPU utilization. alarm => 85% at 5 minute slices.
The problem with this is that we're unsure WHAT is causing it. I have an idea to poll cpu usage every 5 mins and if there's a spike (eg, => 85%) then dump some process table stuff exposing the offenders.

I am trying to write a shell script in order to automate the process of uploading a file onto an FTP server using the built in FTP commands in ubuntu server (lucid). In order to connect I can use the following:
Code:
ftp wsbeorchids.org.uk
Name (wsbeorchids.org.uk:danielgroves): USERNAME
Password: PASSWORD
In need to pass my username and password in when prompted the prompts. How should I go about doing this? I have tried echoing the values without success. Please not that I am something of an amateur with scripting.

I've looked everywhere but I can't find where to change the default box for incoming mail, or am I on the wrong track. It's a nuisance having to change folders and I can't configure wastebin to empty on exit.And I can't get kmail to import from evolution. Do I have to go to the evolution storage and do it manually, and if so, how do I do that?

I'm still quite wet behind the ears with CentOS/Unix. What I'm trying to do is to setup a non interactive user, where I login with an interactive user and su to the non interactive. I have set the non interactive with /sbin/nologin (through the GUI), but when I login with the interactive user and su to the non interactive user I get the following:
"This account is currently not available".

Any pointers to make a shell script in cronjob or using at to be user interactive. We have a requirement to script a program where it prompts the users in CUI for feedback and capture the output in a text file and act based on the feedback.For eg: At pre-defined time i should prompt the acitve users whether it is ok to shutdown, whose feedback would be captured in a text file. Post which act on the updates in the text file

On my laptop for testing, I simply chown each subdir of /var/www to my myuser:www-data. But, now that I am setting up a public facing server, I'm wondering if this is the proper way to do so? If not, what is the best way to allow a non-root account to write to /var/www.

I was wondering, i have a webfolder and have permissions set to 770 with group being www-data. I would like to give access to one folder to a friend so he can edit images, css, etc. I made that folder 770 with group being site_name with www-data and him being in the group. So far so good it sounds like. However when i use the full path to the directory linux says it doesnt exist.
Is there a way i can make it so he doesnt have r/w file on files inside the parent directories and still access the directory i want to give him?

I would like to give a non-root user (nicollet) the ability to detect and send a signal to processes started by Apache2 (those processes are FastCGI scripts and the signal tells them to empty their cache). The processes are owned by the web user (www-data), and I'm running on Debian unstable.
I can't find any way to have the nicollet user see those processes.
The processes are running and can see by both root and www-data:
root@linux-01:~# ps -Af | grep baryton
www-data 17649 17648 0 10:27 ? 00:00:00 baryton
www-data 28145 1 0 Nov01 ? 00:00:12 baryton --bot
root 18701 18700 0 10:46 pts/0 00:00:00 grep baryton
root@linux-01:~#
[Code]....
The most surprising is that the grep process is indeed run by www-data (because it's started from a setuid executable) and is visible, but the baryton process isn't.
What's going on here? Why can ps run by www-data show those processes, but ps run by a setuid executable running as www-data cannot, when it's started by nicollet?

I need to give a user write access to /var/www and its subdirectories. The current directory permissions are as follows:rwx r-x r-x root root
I added the user to the root group but that didn't seem to help.I read I could chmod -R to change the access to write for the www directory and subdirectories but I don't want to change things and mess up the website. How can I give the user access to write to the www directory and subdirectories without messing anything up? Would changing the www directory group owner to his group cause an issue anywhere?

When I log on a root and attempt to issue the command Freshclam to upgrade the virus definitions it attempts or create a new file with a definition name. I get a message stating that the directory isnt writable. The user and group access rights are as follows:
USER = read, write, execute
Group = read, write, execute
All= read, execute.
The only way I can get around this is by applying a 777 which would be read, write and execute for all. Now, I have a group define with several user ids in it including Root.How do I connect the group with the directory/file so I dont have to apply a 777 access right to group users could issue the Freshclam command.

For the past few days I was putting effort on understanding the software control flow starting from "Boot loader" to "Linux User space".
I am consolidating the entire process and putting forth in this forum...It would be great if someone can validate this..It might be useful to other new bees too.
Step 1 : Power up the board
Step 2 : The CPU control goes to EEPROM/storage memory where BIOS resides
Step 3: BIOS gets loaded in RAM and gets executed
Step 4: During execution, the selection of Boot device has to be done with the help of BIOS Menu [Blue screen appearance during start up in normal PC's]
Step 5: BIOS shall access the Bootloader stored in boot device [for eg.,Hard disk]. Boot loader is stored in MBR area.
for explanation purpose I take the following configurations
Bootloader = GRUB
Boot Device = Hard Disk
Step 6: GRUB shall be loaded in RAM and gets executed
Step 7: GRUB shall load the KERNEL image to RAM. Kernel image is stored in Hard Disk.
The question of "How the GRUB knows where the Kernel image is stored".
The answer is
1. In the "Grub.config" file, the location of "Kernel Image" and " Ramdisk Image" [which will be discussed later in the section] is being given.
Step 8: Kernel Image followed by Ramdisk Image is loaded in RAM by GRUB bootloader
Step 9: Kernel Image gets executed...During execution, top portion of the code shall make initial hardware initialization and latter part
of the code shall just decompress the Kernel Image
Step 10 : After decompressing the Kernel Image, it shall decompress
the already loaded Ramdisk Image
Ram disk is just creating a temporary hard disk in RAM. The main responsibility includes it consists of minimal driver files, executables, directory structures to created a TEMPORARY ROOT FILE SYSTEM.
This Temporary Root File system shall be used by Kernel Image
1. Execute the executables to access the Hard disk
2. For creating Permanent Root File System in HARD DISK
Step 11 : Kernel Shall look for the file /Linuxrc in Ramdisk. Linuxrc
is a USER script file [not sure]
Step 12: At the end of script file Linuxrc, the Ramdisk shall give the
control to "USER SPACE" [path for writing the script not known]in Linux kernel
Step 13: USER SPACE is the normal shell

I managed to setup an encrypted partition that's mounted on boot using dm-crypt/LUKS.
The relevant entry from my /etc/fstab:
/dev/mapper/st_crypt /media/st ext4 defaults 0 2
The partition is mounted at boot, and I can write to it as root just fine, but I have no idea how to make it writable by a normal user (i.e the users group).
