General :: Upload Local Changed Files To FTP Server?
Aug 23, 2011
I use a PHP IDE that has no built-in ability to upload a project to a site. So, I'm looking for common easy to use tool for Linux that would able to upload modified documents to the server instead of uploading of the whole site. I also accept shell scripts that would be able to do this.

I've setup a Lamp Server for Testing, The Lamp Server is Up & Running on CentOs 5.5
I am now trying to setup a VSFTP server where local users can upload files to there home directory so that Apache can serve web pages straight from the directories of system user home/accounts giving users the ability to run their own web sites which are hosted off the main server [tutorial here: [url]
So far i have been able to serve/display index.html files from the users home directory [url] but so far i cant upload files to any user home directory, every time i try to upload a file with filezilla i get this error message: 553 Could not create file. Critical file transfer error
I have searched online for similar problems like mine and so far i've tried alot of the solution but none seem to work. I'm confused, dont know where i went wrong, i put the users in a group called ftpusers and here are the permissions on the users (test, ftpuser & testftp) home directory. have a look an tell me where i went wrong :(
Also the root directory where the web pages are served from is called public_html here are the permissions
Here is my vsftp.conf file can someone check it to see if i made any errors in there:

I want to upload files from my computer to an FTP site and I don't want to upload files that are already on the server. So I need a tool that finds out which local files that are different from the ones on the server, or that don't exists on the server.
Some requirements:
I'm using a cheap provider that does not support rsync or ssh, so I can only use FTP. I generate the files before uploading them, so comparing timestamps is meaningless. I've tried lftp with the mirror command. It's slow (I think it uploads all the files). I upload the files from different computers, so I can't use sitecopy, which uses a local database to keep track of which files are on the server. I'd like to be able to upload all changed files with one command. Preferably no GUI application. And it needs to run in Ubuntu.
I was thinking about creating a tool similar to sitecopy, but which stores checksums of all the files on the FTP server on the server itself. But then I thought that there may already be such a tool.

I have a problem while copying files from a remote computer to my local one using the scp command. I am sure that I am using it correctly, please check it below:
---
blah@blah.com:~/g4work> scp blah2@blah2.com:IndirectMethod_Spher...s/H_1.mac.root .
---
What I get in return (instead of the statement saying 100% of file copied) is:
---
On this machine the G4SYSTEM=Linux-g++
---
The interesting point is that the above returned statement is one of the Environment variables set on both the machines that are necessary to work with a toolkit called Geant4. Here is what I get when I type 'printenv | grep G4' just to show you (note the statement in bold):
---
G4LEVELGAMMADATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/PhotonEvaporation2.0
G4INSTALL=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02
G4LEDATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/G4EMLOW6.9
G4NEUTRONHPDATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/G4NDL3.13
G4VIS_BUILD_OPENGLX_DRIVER=1
G4RADIOACTIVEDATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/RadioactiveDecay3.2
G4ABLADATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/G4ABLA3.0
G4LIB=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/lib
G4VIS_BUILD_RAYTRACERX_DRIVER=1
G4LIB_BUILD_SHARED=1
G4VIS_USE_OPENGLX=1
G4UI_USE_TCSH=1
G4VIS_USE_RAYTRACERX=1
G4REALSURFACEDATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/RealSurface1.0
G4SYSTEM=Linux-g++
G4WORKDIR=/home/blah/g4work
---
The other thing that I would like to mention is that these Geant4 Env. Variables are loaded each time a new (bash) shell is started as a result of the bash login script.

One of Konqueror's unique features is that i can name a local process as the action in a form. When i submit that form, the local process is executed. Very helpful for certain offline tasks. What would make it even better is if i could find a way to pass some data to that local process from the html page. This could be the content of a hidden input item, etc. Alternatively, if there is a way for Konqueror to create or update a local file with data from the html page, that would acheive the same end.

I have a directory (let's say A) with a few hundred files and subdirectories and a copy of this directory (let's say B). All the files and subdirectories in B have a newer date than A. However only a few of them are really changed files. Is there a way to find those files and directories? Basically they have different sizes so this could be used to compare them with the files from A.

if there an application which does the following:
1. I have a laptop with an internal 200GB HD.
2. I run the application & it creates a list of all files (size & time-stamp) without actually storing them. Let's call this the "snapshot list".
3. I update some of the files on the laptop.
4. Now I run the application & it only copies the files which have changed on the laptop, that have different size/time-stamp from the snapshot list, onto some external media, such as a memory card. Of course, the files should be copied onto their proper location in the directory tree & not just pile up in one place.
Why is this useful? although the laptop has a 200GB HD I typically only update a small number of files, whose total size is maybe 10MB or so. If I could only backup those which have changed, I could do this with a tiny SD card instead of lugging around an external usb HD.

i would like to setup one of my old pcs as a file server and internet gateway; we are living in a large building shared with 40 others. the ubuntu box would be the one connected to the internet via ethernet and sharing connexion via wifi. i haven't started yet - presently, i am doing the ground work and reading before to start i understand sharing the internet is relatively simple and can be done from the GUI
What we would like is slightly like BT Fon or BT Open Zone in the UK: you can hook on a free network but in order to access outside (internet: email, web, ftp, etc) you need to login login would help us monitor fair usage. I imagine something with username and password for each user would do: as we are a few in the same building not everyone is actually paying for the connection and we don't want to end up with rather large excess bills. So the ones who are paying access both files and internet; those who dont just have access to the files on the local server.
Do i need Ubuntu server to set this up? What hardware would be ideal - given we are all far from rich but willing to have a nice setup
It would be great if you could share some knowledge around the topic and eventually provide some tutorial; also any heads-up on the hardware side would be great! (signal booster, etc - there's 3 floors and 3 buildings)

I just read the Linux scp command issue question and it reminded me that I regularily forget to specify the colon in the host part of a scp command, and thus copying a file locally instead of copying to a remote host, e.g. I do
scp foo host
instead of
scp foo host:
But I never use scp to copy a file locally. So I wonder if there is a way to make scp fail if both (the source and destination) arguments refer to local files.

I have a Ubuntu server hosted on Amazon EC2. I need to create an automated backup scheme so I created another Ubuntu instance on my local network which is hosted in a virtual environment. I managed to transfer the necessary files between 2 machines on the same network using the rsync command:
rsync -azvv -e ssh /home/path/folder1/ remoteuser@remotehost.remotedomain:/home/path/folder2
How can I do the same thing but transferring files from my Amazon server to my local server? Is there a way I can achieve this with port forwarding, or by VPN, or anything else? It doesn't have to be rsync. If you know about a better method, kindly let me know.

I have a big iso image which is currently being downloaded by a torrent client with space-reservation turned on: that means, file size is not changing while some chunks in in (4 Mib) are constantly changing because of a download.
At 90% download I do the initial rsync to save time later:
$ rsync -Ph DVD.iso /media/another-hdd/
sending incremental file list
DVD.iso
[Code]....
Then, when the file's fully downloaded, I rsync again:
total size is 2.60G speedup is 1.00
Speedup=1 says delta-transfer was not used, although 90% of the file has not changed, target dir is on another FS and copying takes several minutes. Why doen't it try to speedup the transfer?! How can I force rsync to use delta-transfer?

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 server edition as a guest OS in Virtual Box. I am trying to configure it as a web server to use for testing purposes for websites. The present problem is that I cannot upload files to it using FTP. I have installed the VSFTPD daemon on the server. The server is connected to the Internet using the default NAT interface of Virtual Box. I have run the following commands to configure port forwarding for FTP with Virtual Box:
Code:
VBoxManage modifyvm "Server Name" --natpf1 "FTP,tcp,,2020,,20"
VBoxManage modifyvm "Server Name" --natpf1 "FTP,tcp,,2121,,21"
The host computer that I am using is a Macbook Pro (Intel) running 10.6.5. I have tried the following FTP clients without success; Mac
command line FTP, Filezilla, Classic FTP, Firefox 3.6.12. I get the following errors with each of them:
Mac command line FTP
Code:
$ ftp 127.0.0.1 [2121]
ftp: Unknown port `[2121]', using port 21
ftp: Can't connect to `127.0.0.1': Connection refused
ftp: Can't connect to `127.0.0.1'
Filezilla
[code]....

I want to know what is the best way/practice to let users upload and download files? I want to be able to let the user upload a file, list all the files uploaded, and allow him to download any file from that list, also delete a file. To my understanding I can make a php script to let them do this and the uploaded files are in a specific folder in the server or I can insert the files into a SQL table. Which direction should I go, let them directly upload the files to a specific folder (no SQL involve), or upload the files into a SQL table?
