General :: Signal Communication Between The Processes?
Sep 20, 2010
I am writing a code which communicates between 2 processes created by fork() statement. Parent reads a file and write the data into a shared memory and sends a signal to the child. The child then receives a signal from the parent to start reading. After finishing the read operation the child sends a signal to the parent asking it to resume its action. Some things are going wrong in my code.
1. segmentation error in memcpy() statement.
2. terminal hangs after running the code.
3. Synchronization problem between processes..
Code: #include <stdio.h>
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <wait.h>
#include <unistd.h>
[code].....

I am in verse to understand the serial communication between guest and host.I have just added a serial port through VI Client selecting "Use serial port on host"(host being ESX host).If I am on VM and run :
ll > /dev/ttyS0
I understand that it should get displayed through ESX Host. So On ESX Host, I typed:
cat /dev/ttyS0
But nothing worked !

How do you interface with the Linux I2C driver from kernel space? For example, if I had LEDs connected to a GPIO expander on the I2C bus, how would I blink them twice before going down for reset from machine_reset()?
Essentially, I believe I need to call the functions i2c_smbus_write_byte(), i2c_smbus_read_byte(), etc. But these functions require I2C client data that I do not understand how to supply.

I have an application which is separated to several parts (processes) communicating over TCP/IP, using a pre-defined port on localhost.Is this always safe? Can some kind of a firewall (corporate, locally installed, Windows firewall, etc) block this traffic? Or can some user settings in the OS that can block this traffic?The OSes I'm interested in are Windows (XP through 7) and Linux (Ubuntu, RHEL, SUSE)

I am very new to linux and I have been given a school project that involves getting my windows pc talking to a linux single board computer that I have. It can be found here. [URL]. I have two bluetooth usb dongles, one to plug into my pc and one to plug into my linux board, I know that both work as I have tried talking to them both using my mobile/cell phone. Also when I plug the dongle into my linux board it recognizes something has been plugged in. However I am unsure where to go from here. I have tried "searching" for the device using my windows pc, but it will only find my cell phone and not my linux board. I also tried mounting it similar to how i would mount a usb drive e.g. mount dev/sda etc. How to setup the linux board for bluetooth communications?

When I try to Sync a Palm Vx to my PC through serial port I get a communication error message in the gadget. My PalmOS Devices application is already configured to use tty0 or tty1 in unsuccessfully trials. I have a lot of information in the addresses, agenda, notes, etc. and do not want to loose that information gathered for years, nor to return to Windows.
As a test, I used a serial mouse in the serial port and It didn't work. I verified the Bios Setup and COM 1 and COM 2 are enabled.
I also checked my system serial support with the following commands:
And messages were OK when compared with typical outputs. My machine is a Pentium 4 CPU 1.6 GHz, in a U8668 motherboard (Award Software International). I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with Gnome.
I am new in Linux and don't know Bash yet. I had followed indications from Internet tutorials successfully, but I don't know how to proceed in this case.

I have been trying out serial and parallel data communication on Fedora 13 Beta. I can easily see the list of serial ports through:
Code:
setserial -g /dev/ttyS[0-3]
And can also write some data through:
Code:
ll > /dev/ttyS0
But I am unable to see parallel ports
I can see something like:
Code:
/dev/parport0
But when I try out:
ll > /dev/parport0
It throws error.

I use my old computer as an NAS, so I remove the monitor after I installed linux on it (disconnect vga cable). I use ssh to control the machine and it works fine. Until some day, after kernel/softare upgrade or messing up some configs, I cannot connect to it through ssh, then I have to plug the monitor back, but the monitor says "No input signal". So I have to restart the computer WITH the monitor connected, and the monitor's back!
I think the computer/linux kernel doesn't detect the monitor plug-in event. So how can I start my linux box without a monitor, but when it goes wrong I can still plug my monitor (vga) back and use the console.
Edit: just one pci-e video card, has dvi, vga, tv/out (s-video)
Edit2: Xorg is not running. I just need the console (CTRL+ALT+F1). The problem is, if the machine booted without a monitor connected, it won't give me a pseudo terminal after I attach the vga cable while it's running. Clearly the monitor is not auto detected as usb device. I'm wondering how to let the monitor auto detected.

I just installed Ubuntu using Wubi and I am having problems with it. I am running an x58 Rampage II Gene with a radeon hd4850. I'm using a polaroid tlx-04240b hdtv for my monitor. After installing via wubi when I select ubuntu from grub I just get a blue screen that says no signal. I had the same problems before when I tried installing ubuntu and I finally gave up after messing with it for a while. Anyhow I finally started trying to figure it out again and I am brand new to linux so i really dont have a clue what to do here. I'm about 70% sure the problem is just the resolution being to high or the proper driver not installed but as i said I've never successfully used linux so i just dont know how to fix it.

I need to create a small list of processes in a monitor.conf file. A shell script needs to check the status of these processes and restart if they are down. This shell script needs to be run every couple of minutes.
The output of the shell script needs to be recorded in a log file.
So far I have created a blank monitor.conf file. I have gotten the shell script to automatically updated every couple of minutes The Shell script also sends some default test information to the log file.
how I go about doing this part ? A shell script needs to check the status of these processes and restart if they are down.
I have put in the conf file the below commands but I am not sure if this is right.
ps ax | grep httpd
ps ax | grep apache
I also dont know if the shell script should read from the conf file or if the conf file should send information to the shell script file.

I would like to use ulimit -St <some number> to stop a process form running once the process has exceeded the amount of CPU time specified in the ulimt arg.
I have been able to get ulimit -t (or -Ht) to kill my process, but I need the signal to be something other than 9 and other than SIGXCPU.
Is there a way to have ulimit issue a kill -<somthing else> when the cpu time specified has been exceeded?

I have a question. I want to monitor
- CPU usage daily
- RAM usage daily
- Harddisk Space
- top processes
- hardware failure
What commands do I need to run to output the result to a log file? I know there are solutions both paid and free, but my company does not allow. they want linux built in commands or methods to do it. I do not know bash scripting. I know some commands like "df -h" to monitor harddisk space but not sure on the other stuffs.

The following code is for monitoring the memory used by apache processes. But I got a problem that the data I got by this script is much larger than the physical memory. It was said that there are some libraries used simultaneously by many processes, so the data I got has some double counted part. Because apache has many httpd processes.
Anyone have an idea of getting the multi-processes memory used?
Code:
#!/bin/sh
#G.sh 20100813
USAGE="Usage: $0 processName"

I've got the following problem:
1. I start two bash windows
2. In one of them I start a script test1:
Code:
This script puts a natural number 5 times a second.
3. Then in the second bash window I type (as root):
Code:
The script test2 looks as follows:
Code:
While true; do
true;
done
During the following 15 seconds test2 is the process with the highest real-time priority. As far as I know the script doesn't perform any system calls so it shouldn't be suspended even for a minimal timeslice. My question is: why the process test1 manages to put a few numbers on the screen before test2 stops. I thought that test2 would exclusivly own the processor for 15 seconds.

I am studying for the LPIC-1 exam, and reading a book that they recommend: "Introduction to Linux: A Hands-on Guide", by Machtelt Garrels. There's one question on the 4th chapter (Processes), that I found confusing: Question: Based on process entries in /proc, owned by your UID, how would you work to find out which processes these actually represent?
What does he mean? If I run the command (considering that my username is sl33p):
Code:
$ps -u sl33p
...gives me the right answer?
The ps man page says:
-u userlist
Select by effective user ID (EUID) or name.
This selects the processes whose effective user name or ID is in userlist. The effective user ID describes the user whose file access permissions are used by the process (see geteuid(2)). Identical to U and --user.
