General :: Ran "find / -mtime +1 -exec Rm {} ;" - Trying To Clear A Directory ?
Jul 6, 2011
I'm very very tired, worked all night long, and I did't sleep for hours... So I'm like a zombie now... half awake, and half asleep.
I was trying to clear a directory. Then I run the command cd to enter the directory, and then before thinking I run this dangerous command. on my Linux server: "find / -mtime +1 -exec rm {} ;"
I got a lot of:
Could this command have deleted something inside these directories? I'm afraid that the next reboot the server won't startup...

I've got a script where I have to parse out the last modified time for a large amount of files. Piping the output for "ls" into "cut" seems to work most of the time, but the output is unpredictable.The "fields" argument doesn't find the date modified columns consistently, and using character count is as well since the output can vary in width depending on the file name

I am writing a bash script which includes the find (and rm command with exec) command the options -mtime -15 or +15 so that files older 15 days must be deleted from the home directory. I think that -mtime +15 should be ok, but in which case does the option -mtime -15 really come in handy?? go back 15 days until today's date?

I need to delete all *.trc files that are older than 30 days and I am getting a "Argument list too long" error. There are other files that should not be deleted which is why I am using the "*.trc" and newer files need to be kept as well. I have seen other postings but they do not cover both of the conditions. Below are 2 of the many attempts at doing this but I cannot get this to work.
find *.trc -mtime +31 -print| xargs rm -f {}
find *.trc -mtime +31 -print -exec rm -f {} ;

I have some files on server with the date several months ago, but invisible for `find -mtime 7` search. When I list them as `ls -l` they look perfectly normal:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 347253 Jun 12 16:26 pedia_main.2010-06-12-04-25-02.sql.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 490144578 Nov 24 16:26 gsmforum_main.2010-11-24-04-25-02.sql.gz
"find -mtime" does not work as expected on files with different timezones?

I am trying to automate an svnadmin dump command for a backup script, and I want to do something like this:
find /var/svn/* ( ! -name dir -prune ) -type d -exec svnadmin dump {} > {}.svn ;
This seems to work, in that it looks through each svn repository in /var/svn, and runs svnadmin dump on it.
However, the second {} in the exec command doesn't get substituted for the name of the directory being processed. It basically just results a single file named {}.svn.
I suspect that this is because the shell interprets > to end the find command, and it tries redirecting stdout from that command to the file named {}.svn.

I have used this guide to install kernel in my linux cyberciti.biz/tips/compiling-linux-kernel-26.html stage 1 worked perfectly. Now at stage 2 when I write the command dir/ls in the tmp directory I see the file: linux-2.6.26.tar.bz2 (2.6.26 is the version of my kernel) And now if I try to the tar function on my file and write it like this: Code: tar -xjvf linux-2.6.26.tar.bz2 -C /usr/src it gives me couple of errors like:
tar: bzip2: can not exec: no such directory
tar: error is unrecoverable: exiting now
tar: child returned status 2
tar: error exit delayed from previus errors

i had a problem with the find command in bash (which i deem is close enough to a promming language, if not please move this thread :P). i tried to reduce the command to the problem. i want the backticks, or $() for that matter; to be evaluated by -exec of find, not by bash. is that a caveat of find?
Code:
$ find testd -exec echo `basename {}` ; #confused me
test
test/a
test/b
[code]...
edit: i found out whats causing this. `basename {}` gets evaluated by bash before find is invoked, returns {} and `find . -exec echo {} ;" is run. now my question is, how to escape this eveluation from happening before.

I've been following the instructions to install Resin, and all seems to go well until I try to run the /bin/httpd.sh file. It simple says:
Code:
exec: 40: -jar: not found
I suspected this was something to do with my JAVA_HOME variable not being set, so I looked up how to do this and added it to my /etc/bash.bashrc file. Saying "echo $JAVA_HOME" does indeed return the correct path so I don't think this is the problem.

I'm quite new to linux but I have configured a simple ftp server and it's working great. I have a FTP-Shared folder with upload and download subfolders. Under upload's and download's I have identical category subfolders like mp3's, movies, software etc. in both. As the guy's upload, I would like to create a line crontab where I can move all the content under /FTP-Shared/upload/mp3/* older than 14 day's to FTP-Shared/downloads/mp3/ recursively (Like in cp command), but the timestamp must be searched on the first directory and not sub files example: /mp3/Club Dance/CD1/Hallo world.mp3This is how far I got:[root@clients ~]# /usr/bin/find /FTP_Shared/upload/Mp3s/ -depth -mindepth 1 -mtime +14 -type d -exec mv -f {} /FTP_Shared/download/Mp3s/ ;This command moves the directory and files, but it is not recursively

I wrote a script that easily runs it in the same directory as it was run below: #for f in *.MTS do ffmpeg -i "$f" -acodec copy -vcodec libx264 -threads 2 -deinterlace -vpre slow -b 20000k -bt 3000k -refs 4 "${f%.MTS}.mp4" ; #done
I want to be able to use the find command so it will recurse through all the videos in my videos folder. Is there a painless way to do this. Here is the start of my find command but it doesn't work. Any help appreciated:
find . -name "*.MTS" -exec ffmpeg -i 'basename{}' -acodec copy -vcodec libx264 -threads 2 -deinterlace -vpre slow -b 20000k -bt 3000k -refs 4 'basename{%.MTS}.mp4'

I have been working on this for a few hours now and still haven't been able to track down whats going on. I just switched servers and put a fresh debian install on with apache2 + custom suexec + php5(fcgi). now when i upload a file to the site it wont upload, so i tracked down the issue. its the /tmp directory that root tmp. its at 100% so i restart the /etc/init.d/apache2 process and the /tmp directory is automagically cleared to 20% used and i can upload again. so i figure ok its got to be a setting. i looked in all the conf files conf.d the php5 conf files and no where do i have a /tmp directory set. so i think OK I can build a cron to clear the tmp directory every 10 mins till i find the issue, but alas, when i go into the tmp directory There are NO files to delete!!! wtf. holy crap. and all that goodness, this is crazy, how can you have a tmp directory that is not being written to, from all i can see, so i think ok it might be a hard link, i checked, in all root and sub root directories no hard links to tmp, no soft links to temp either. and if i sit in my /tmp directory and do a df -h after some uploads its going from 20% so 23% and up, but i do ls -alh and nothing, then ls -al and watch bytes, nothing , so this is very strange. has anyone encountered something like this? is it possible that this is a hard link thats hidden somewhere or some other extreme function i have never heard of?

I dont want to rename, I want to make a copy of album.jpg and if possible as well rename it to covers.jpg. The file has to be in the same folder that it currently is. I have looked around to see how I can do this but have not been able to.

I am trying find files in a directory that contain numbers. I have tried ls /etc *[0-9]* but that doesn't work. If I cd to /etc and run ls *[0-9]* it almost works but it also includes results from within files. My last thought was to try: find /etc [0-9] -type f but this does not work either. My second problem is that I am trying to get list of files in a directory that were changed less than 10 hours ago, using grep, while leaving out directories. I am completely stuck with the second problem.

The default Emacs on Mac OS X, 22.1, appears to have some problems with the info/help stuff.
When you hit C+h i, it says:
Can't find the Info directory node.
It works in AquaEmacs, but I downloaded the 23 version of emacs precompiled binaries from here and I still have the same problem.
