I have attempted to install kernel 2.6.34 and 2.6.33 kernels with this Debian howto [url] Everything worked without any errors until I went to boot into the new kernel. When I receive this kernel panic output Kernel panic - not syncing VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
It also spits out something about being unable to access ext2 FS. I googled this symptom and have seen that it is fairly common, but everyone's error seems somewhat unrelated. I used the same kernel configuration as the one that is currently working, to keep things simple.
And here is what my menu.list looks like:
Installed Maverick last night... the system has been working fine all day... then on a reboot tonight got the following.
RAMDISK: gzip image found at block 0
usb 1-2: new high speed usb device using ehci_hcd and address 2
uncompression error
VFS: Cannot open root device "mapper/mylaptop-root" or unknown-block(0,0)

Then it gives the Kernel Panic
Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper not tainted 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu
Then a call trace...This is a brand new install of Maverick I copied my files onto a USB and did a fresh install on the whole drive using the alternate CD (the desktop and netbook editions both failed to read on my system) was previously using Karmic with no issues. I tried to e2fsck the dev/sda1 from the CD in "repair broken system" mode but the return was "clean" I read that as the file system being intact but this is an area that I have no real knowledge in.
I got a problem with my kernel. The initramfs source is busybox, python and gcc from ubuntu. The busybox have i compiled it self. Python and gcc is from /usr/bin. I gonna install my kernel on a i586 machine. Old yes. On the xTerm (termial) it stand "root device 8,1).

I've heard that you shouldn't allow root access over ssh; what's the big deal?if a user account who has sudo privileges is cracked already, what's the difference?I allow root access over ssh, but I use a 30 character random password and disable all other accounts. Is this unsafe?

mc (Midnight Commander) in Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) has a problem accessing .zip and other archives as a virtual file system. It has to do with a changed format of the output from unzip. Discussions offer a workaround, but that requires system (i.e. root) file access; my work box is locked down.
I have Ubuntu (without the K) 9.10 at home, and I downloaded the source package and made a code change that's a horrible hack (I would not dream of publishing) that would allow me to run my own correctly working copy of mc in a subdirectory of my $HOME. Alas, my "at home" box is configured differently, both in terms of processor(s) and KDE vs. Gnome; a transferred-over mc executable fails immediately with bus error.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have tried: booting into single user mode (using '1' and 'single' in my bootloader edits) and it still ends up kicking me to the 'myBox login:' prompt booting from a live-CD with no luck - seems my CD drive is hosed, or the system just won't boot the CD
This is a system I set up, literally, years ago, with no need to touch it. It was originally set up as a file server, running SAMBA. I am wanting to add CUPS to it, and possibly a web server if it will handle the load. Currently, it is running Debian 4.0 without a GUI.
My next step, if I can't get into the root account, is to install a new OS (and try to salvage the file shares that exist). I just would rather keep the install that I have, but I need to hack/crack or change my root password.
