Is there any way to search for these recursively in a directory tree, and overwrite them with a reference file, for example "e:mydirgood.png"

I need little help. I want to find all files with extension "*.tar" "*.gz" and "*.zip" and move all those files into "/opt/old" directory. I've tried this command:

I am a member of a group which has written a program whose source code is being held in a specific directory (~cs252/Assignments/basicAsst/project) and we want to go through and change the parameters for the function "sequentialInsert." My job is to find all occurances of the function call to "sequentialInsert" and to also list the files from where the code came from. Also, I have to be in the commandsAsst directory when I do this. I modified files in several directories, and need to run a diff on the backup I created before modifying the file.
I'm trying to compose a simple shell script to speed up the task, but getting a syntax error.
Here is what I have:

diff /maindir/subdir/subdir/$i/filename.txt.old /maindir/subdir/subdir/$i/filename.txt;
done
I know the paths are valid, and if I run just the diff command with the actual DIR1 instead of $i it works.
I'm trying to setup an Apache server on my computer which will allow browsing of files in a specific directory and subdirectories, without needing any sort of authentication.
I've got the Apache2 server up and running through yast, and everything works fine as long as I try to point it to the /www/htdocs folder. However, I want to point it at another folder, which is on another partition. This partition is formatted as NTFS, if that matters at all (here's some background on some permissions issues I had with the NTFS partitions recently).
When I change the "Directory" setting in the Yast http server configuration utility to the directory on the NTFS partition I wish to use, attempting to access the server results in the following error:

I want to take a graphics file and make 10 copies of it to the same directory, each with 001, 002, or some such designation at the end of each file name so they have discrete files names. Is this possible using cp?

But what I want to make an archive from the current directory I thought just to not enter a directory but that doesn't work. I get an error about creating a empty archive so how to do I make it so how do I tell it to do the current directory?

cp -vr --parents /a/b/c/this /x/y
to create a directory /x/y/a/b/c/this containing this and everything under this.
But how could I create a directory x/y/b/c/this (ie omitting a)? I could MOVE to /a/ and then use
cp -vr --parents b/c/this /x/y
but I really don't want to do the MOVE (and can think of circumstances where I might not be able to).
I'm really looking for something exactly similar to the
tar -C DIRECTORY
switch that allows one to make a virtual move to the directory DIRECTORY before commencing the tar operation.
I have a directory that contains some files (over a 1,000) that have a '' in the filename. There are also some good files that I need to keep. therefore I need a script to delete based on inode.
What I have thus far:

I know this is not right ... what I know is is the 'find' is. I need to loop through the $list gleaning inodes to get all the files with '' delete. I'm not sure how. The $i gives me the whole line. I just want the first position. set $() does not seem to work ...
The *.dbf files (DBase III Plus files) have a header (metadata) and follow with n fixed records. I'd like to make a directory entry (like a symbolic link) that point to the fixed record area into a .dbf file. Is it possible in linux? The request is motivated by access a .dbf file from a Firebird SQL Database using CREATE TABLE EXTERNAL FILE '/tmp/mydbf.dbf' ( ... ); but this command only works on fixed records.

I have used Awk in the past to isolate the file name from a given path..that is to say, I may have a list of files contained in list.txt.Can someone please post the Awk command that would do this? (I assume it will be very similar in form to the Awk command I showed above.)The point is, sometimes I may want to isolate the second directory, sometimes I may want to isolate the third directory or tenth or whatever - so I am hoping that if someone posts the Awk command to isolate the second level directory (to produce the output I showed in Fig.3) it should be fairly obvious by looking at the form of this command how to alter it and so isolate any other directory I want.
