General :: Shell Script - Use Variable In A For Loop With Directory Path?

I modified files in several directories, and need to run a diff on the backup I created before modifying the file.
I'm trying to compose a simple shell script to speed up the task, but getting a syntax error.
Here is what I have:
for i in DIR1 DIR2 DIR3 DIR4 DIR5 do;
diff /maindir/subdir/subdir/$i/filename.txt.old /maindir/subdir/subdir/$i/filename.txt;
done
I know the paths are valid, and if I run just the diff command with the actual DIR1 instead of $i it works.

I need to set the path to the bin directory and also a new environmental variable JAVA_HOME.

extract.ksh use this scripts topic_file_publish.sh but extract.ksh resides in /data/apps/pnbos/scripts
but topic_file_publish.sh in below directory/data/apps/pnbgstk/publication >
ls topic_file_publish.sh topic_file_publish.sh fraespappp8:/data/apps > type topic_file_publish.sh topic_file_publish.sh is hashed (/data/apps/pnbgstk/publication/topic_file_publish.sh)
How it is done?
since topic_file_publish.sh is being directly referenced in the code with absolute path.

I am new to writing shell scripts. So, please bare with me. I am currently trying to write a shell script which will read the directory path as input from user and will traverse the Dir tree to find all available audio and video files. I have tried to write as much as I could but I don't know where I am making mistake as I get some files to be audio file which are actully tar balls. On the second note there are some files which video but script shows them to be audio. And, some video files are completely skipped. I am giving the shell script below so that you can see. I am using two external files as source which I am attaching.

Experimenting with shell variables, accidentally deleted the path variable how could I return to the original path value. What kinds of problems will I have if I don't have a path variable.

I'm trying to read content of file to variable and use this variable in for loop. The problem is, when I have c++ comment style in file - /*. Spaces in line are also interpreted as separated lines.
For example:

Changing $files to "$files" eliminate these problems but causes that whole content of variable is treated as one string (one execution of loop).

I am trying to write a script that will find any user on the server running more than one instance of the epiphany web browser process, then kill all their epiphany pids. (This is necessary sometimes to cure lockups, and repeat processes are the telltale sign in this case). I have tried implementing the until loop:

Unfortunately, the script only calculates the USER variable once at the beginning of the script. Fair enough, that's how it's written. My question is, how would I get the USER variable to update for each pass of the until loop so that it could cure multiple users of this ailment if necessary? That is, calculate $USER, kill their epiphany pids, repeat those two steps until the $USER variable comes up blank, then exit.

how to add a path to PATH variable permanently so that it remains persisent even after closing shell and rebooting the system when i added a path, to variable it remained there as long as i didn't closed the shell. but when i reopened it ,changed were undone.

I was changing my sudoers file to give permission of using "sudo" command to all root commands, asking for the password. It works, it's fine. The problem I'm having is with the variable PATH to my user, I think.
In terminal:
normal user:

/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin
super user:

root@ataias-notebook:~# echo $PATH
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin
As many commands are in /sbin/, root can use them without writing "/sbin/" but I can't do the same cause it's not in my path.
while root do this:

shutdown -h now
I should do:

sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now
and I want to use only

sudo shutdown -h now
I want to change my user's path variable to make it equal to root's path. how to change it? I don't know many things of shell still.

One of my colleague ran into trouble with setting up of path variable.
Earlier the entry for PATH in /etc/profile was:

I have downloaded java and installed it with chmod +x and then ./bin package.
Hereunder is an output from CLI (putty)
I understand that the system knows the java is in a wrong place but if I do java -version it finds it correctly. I don't know and I don't understand how do I need to tell the OS that the java is somewhere else, I just did that with export java home and java path but still dosen't work, it keep tells when I do whereis java "java: /usr/share/java"

I'm having a strange issue with the PATH variable when running the command 'sudo su'. When executing this command the PATH variable changes. No problems there, but it changes to:

Looking at this, there are two weird entries (//sbin and //bin) which should both start '/usr' instead. I'm not sure how I've managed to change this, or how a piece of software I'm using has done it (more likely it was me I expect), but could anyone suggest which file to look in to correct it? If it makes a difference the machine is running CentOS 5.

I am trying to do some shell programs. I tried some sites regarding the while loop, they give the structure as:

But the below code also worked for me:

By using (( )) I could use while, for. But the documentations didnt follow this way. I mainly use this for datastructure programming.

I am using CentOS5.5 & everytime it is showing command not found. If I export the path as below it will be working fine until a reboot. Again same error i.e command not found if I open new terminal. Every time I am exporting as below:
#export PATH=/sbin/:$PATH
#export PATH=/usr/sbin/:$PATH
#export PATH=/usr/bin/:$PATH
#export PATH=/bin/:$PATH
How can I set these permanently as that the paths should automatically be exported for everyone user whenever the system boots. And command completion also should happen for eg. #fdi (press tab), then it should show available options such as fdisk, etc.

1) the make gives error that header not found( probably make don't have the path)
2) when i closed the terminal and opened it again the PATH I newly entered was not there !

I'm looking to get a shell script to loop through a number of directories and subdirectories,looking for files that contain a particular substring, and renaming the file by replacing the search string with a different substring. For example if you had a directory full of folders that contained digital photos (along with various other files which would need to remain unaffected), and the intent was to remove the "DSC_" prefix from several thousand files buried within. I've whipped up a rather long-winded solution that works well for this purpose but chokes on directory names with spaces. I am reasonably sure there's a 2 or 3-liner that would accomplish this exact same task.

I am using Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5. I know the theory that -- using export to set environment variable, the environment variable will apply to current and child environment, but without using export to set environment variable, the environment variable will only apply to the current environment. What is the exact definition of "child environment" and "current environment"? For example,

$ echo "Hello [$var1]"
The value of var1 (which is 123) is printed in shell, but I think echo is a command invoked by current shell, and it (the echo command) should be a child environment of current shell and the value of var1 should not (because not using export var1=123) impact echo.
