General :: Changing "code-name Whatever" To Stable/testing?

Jul 3, 2010

What are some major rolling release distros? I know I've heard Debian testing is/can be, is this just a matter of changing "code-name whatever" to stable/testing? Arch was good but it just seemed a little to bleeding edge for my tastes (Though the documentation is far and away the best I've seen) What are some other rolling release distros?

General :: Looking For Tools To Analyze Code Complexity / Unit Testing For Embedded

Sep 11, 2010

I am looking for tools for static/dynamic code analysis for embedded Linux system development (both device driver and user space apps) with ARM-based processor. We use Eclipse IDE and C++ lanuage for development. Does anybody have recommendation for tools to analyze code complexity? The tools is better to support McCabe complexity metric, however, we may also consider others. Does anybody have recommendation for unit testing?

Debian :: Debian Testing Vs Debian Stable With Testing Repositories?

Feb 28, 2009

I am a ubuntu user but I want to go to the next level to use debian because what I heard of it, but I get confused to what to install on my computer do I install debian testing or debain stable with testing repositories.

- I want to use this system to the home use only.
- I want to use the newest packages because the stable packages is too old to use.
- What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist)
- Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?

Debian :: Upgrading From Jessie To Testing By Changing Sources List

May 20, 2015

I have a fresh install of jessie and I'm thinking about starting using testing instead. I tried to use the testing installer but it was so buggy I finally gave up and I now have some questions.

My sources.list currently looks like this:

Code: Select all# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.0.0 _Jessie_ - Official amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20150425-12:50]/ jessie main

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.0.0 _Jessie_ - Official amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20150425-12:50]/ jessie main

deb http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ jessie main
deb-src http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ jessie main

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main

# jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main
deb-src http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main

- I get that I should change jessie but to what, testing or stretch?

- Is it considered reasonably "safe" to upgrade a system by changing sources.list and then running apt-get update && apt-get upgrade?

By safe I mean something along the lines of that given that I have a fresh install of jessie is there a great chance that the upgrade will break my system?

General :: Is There A Stable Distro Using Btrfs

Sep 20, 2010

I'm a big fan of ZFS on FreeBSD (I've been using it on my home server since before it got stable; bleeding edge, baby!) and I'd like to try out btrfs to see how that's evolving. Since it's still largely in development, none of the usual mainstream distros have btrfs as an option. I haven't used Linux in a bunch of years, so I don't really know what my best options are for giving btrfs a try.

General :: Most Simple+stable Distro For Desktop?

Mar 5, 2011

I'm a low-demand home desktop user concerned mainly with OS stability and simplicity. Current setup is dual-boot PC with Ubuntu10.04+Mint9. I use my PC mainly to write, using Word on Wine. Even more boring: I connect to net via external dialup modem. Both Ubuntu10.04+Mint9 seem excellent but have tons of features I don't need.

Is there a distro that will trade off advanced features in exchange for stability and reliability? I've read that Mepis is among the most rock-stable distros, with no attempts to be cutting-edge. Is this the case? Is there another distro emphasizing stability and simplicity? Must be a simple install, like Ubuntu+Mint. Must work well with Wine and dialup.

General :: Creating Stable, Automatically Reconnecting PPTP Connection In Ubuntu

Aug 13, 2010

I've been using network-manager-pptp to create a PPTP VPN connection in my Ubuntu virtual machine for a while now, but I have constant problems with random disconnects. I don't know what the cause of the problem is, but I suspect that network-manager-pptp is not the most well-written piece of software around...

Is there another way of instantiating PPTP connections in a more robust manner? The same PPTP server works reasonably OK with Windows 7 (some disconnects, fewer than in Ubuntu, and Windows has an auto-reconnect feature).

I read some guides on using the pptp command, but they all seemed pretty low-level, messing around with ppp. I never found the time to figure out how it all was supposed to fit together. Has anyone accomplished what I'm trying and is willing to share the knowledge?

EDIT: Tried kvpnc, and it seems the stability is more or less the same as network-manager-pptp. The error message is "Modem hangup".

To clarify, I understand that the connection can go down, but I want to be able to reconnect automatically when disconnected.

General :: Automated Telnet For Testing Servers

Aug 20, 2009

So I have a script that is supposed to check to see if a mail server is up and responsive. What I want to know is how I can send it the telnet escape character. I've tried:VAR=`(sleep 5;echo quit) | (telnet mailserver.timbuktu.net 25 2>&- )`

This works BUT there is a problem as the mail server may have been accidentally firewalled off. If this happens, my automated checking script will hang. What I want to do is send the escape character so that the '>' prompt comes up. They I should be able to send it "quit" even if it is hung on not getting a response from the server. VAR=`(sleep 5;echo -e '^]';sleep 1;echo quit) | (telnet arhqmg01.usarec.army.mil 25 2>&- )`

The above doesn't work. telnet interprets CTRL+] as '^]' but you can't type '^]' and get the same effect. So I guess what I need is to send the actual keystrokes. Like echo "somenumber" ; echo quit

General :: Testing - Stop OS From Allocating More Memory To A Process

Dec 2, 2010

I want to test that a process properly kills itself and restarts when it can't allocate needed memory. One idea I had was to start other memory-consuming processes and hope that OOM killer kills the process being tested, but 1) this isn't quite the same; 2) it may kill other processes instead; 3) since this is an embedded system, I don't have any programs available except for the system under test and BusyBox.Is there a more direct way to ensure that Linux won't allocate memory to a process?
