Mar 14, 2010Recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on laptop - new partition. Have PC running XP with internet connection. I have a satellite connect from Germany. I live in Turkmenistan.I know all IP addresses, subnet mask, Default gateway, etc. Can someone help configure internet on laptop w/Ubuntu? I am not the fastest ball down the alley but I shouldn't have too much problem with the terminal. Just be gentle. I just completed a pppoeconf search and was informed something or another couldn't be found. It's a little frustrating because I need to disconnect internet cable from PC and connect to Laptop. let me add that I do not have an internet user name or password "supplied by ISP". But I hooked up connection OK on XP.

startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits.When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
General :: Top Causes Of Slow Ssh Logins
Jul 22, 2010there are 2 spots where I see a range from instantaneous to multi-second delays.Between issuing the ssh command and getting a login prompt and between entering the passphrase and having the shell load.Now, specifically I'm looking at ssh details only here. Obviously network latency, speed of the hardware and OSes involved, complex login scripts, etc can cause delays. For context I ssh to a vast multitude of linux distributions and some Solaris hosts using mostly Ubuntu, CentOS, and MacOS X as my client systems. Almost all of the time, the ssh server configuration is unchanged from the OS's default settings.
What ssh server configurations should I be interested in? Are there OS/kernel parameters that can be tuned? Login shell tricks? Etc?

General :: F14 - OpenVPN Disconnect Automatically After Login
Jan 15, 2011I'm using openvpn under linux OS which is Fedora Core 14, in the folder "/etc/openvpn" i put 5 files which belongs to the network server that I should connect to, files are :
two files with the extension ".crt"
two files with the extension ".key"
one file with the extension ".conf"
Now, when I issue the following command (as root) :

It asks for my username & password to the network server, & after I entered the required authentication information, I successfully login, but I get disconnected automatically after two or three seconds.
- I connect to the network without any disconnection or problems under windows
- I use openvpn version "openvpn-2.1.1-2.fc13.i686"
- there was a bug in my OS "Fedora core 14" which is that I cannot activate or deactivate any ethernet cards, which solved by disabling NetworkManager in all run levels
- I disabled iptables
- I disabled selinux
- I got this error in /var/log/messages file when I disconnect from the openvpn network "

Jun 2, 2010If I ssh to a remote machine and then lose internet connectivity, the session freezes. I can't control-c or otherwise abort and go back to my local xterm or terminal prompt but if I wait several minutes it will do so.
There must be some way to force it to abort the remote ssh session when connectivity is lost. I'm on a Mac but I believe this happens on cygwin or linux as well.

I wanted a way to connect to MySQL on our website VPS but wanted the connection encrypted rather than just using PHP's mysql_connect() function and connecting to the remote IP. This seems to be working great. I'm also looking into autossh to make sure that the tunnel gets reconnected when it drops.is there a command/utility that can list the currently active SSH tunnels? Be great if there was a way of terminating an active tunnel through a command as well. Or is it a case of manually digging through the process list and killing the specific PID like I have been?

I know there are quite a bunch of those available, but i haven't found a single one which could run with SYSTEM or Netservice privileges or have decent command line options so i could elevate the program myself. The mapped drive should be available for other services running on the same server.
Most of the programs (sftp netdrive, expandrive, etc) have only option to startautomatically only when someone logs in. Because of that they are useless to me.Their inability to handle non-interactive starts is a bummer too. FTP->SFTP wrappers don't count as solution despite of integrated windows support for ftp drives. The way they are handled in windows makes ftp mapping unusable without some external ftp drive mapper software.

But when I suspend my laptop using the special keys, I just want to disconnect from wireless without having to use any kind of GUI or curses user interface. It says in the documentation that wicd works by sending DBUS messages, so presumably it's possible to write a command that talks to the daemon directly.But I can't figure out how.Does anybody know by means of what shell command I can tell the wicd daemon to disconnect me from my wireless network?

Jul 5, 2011I'm trying to ensure an app starts on boot up but after MySQL has been started. I can't however locate where MySQL is being started. If I do a chkconfig, it says MySQL is off, yet I can readily access my databases with phpmyadmin.If I look at my boot log, I can see it says MySQL Server is started, right after Apache2 is started.In my rc5.d directory, I only see a symbolic link for Apache2 but nothing for MySQL. The startup script for MySQL appears in /etc/init.d.rc.local has got nothing in it but comments. So it appears to me like it's being run on startup, but not as a service. But I have next to no knowledge of Linux so don't put too much belief in that.I would have originally installed MySQL via apt-get.

Feb 28, 2011My problem is that my fan will keep running quite quickly once started. It will keep running till reboot independently of CPU usage and temperature. To check the temperature I installed lm-sensors. Output of temperature related commands and kernel version are below. Shouldnt they all give the temperature? My machine is a Toshiba Satellite pro L300. Eg. at the moment my fan is running quite quickly although CPU usage is 3-4% and the temperature according to lm-sensors is approximately 40-45 degrees Celcius.

As you see, another bash shell started.
I looked at the tcsh file:
[ss@ssvm ~]$ ll /bin/tcsh
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 345348 2007-02-26 23:58 /bin/tcsh
[ss@ssvm ~]$ ll /bin/csh
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2010-03-07 13:13 /bin/csh -> tcsh
It is not a link (but csh is). I don't understand why this is happening.

Feb 20, 2010Something has caused me to be locked out of root; the KDE login screen now says "root logins are not allowed." It's not as though I don't know the password--I set it up. I might have deleted something I'm not supposed to, because before this, root had also become invisible at the KDE login screen.
