General :: Add Machine Information Into The Ln Command And Rlogin?
May 13, 2011
Our simulations generate some big files, I want to save them under /scratch and then ln -s /scratch/$USER/XXX1234/filename to user's project work area. If user runs the ln command after rlogin or rsh to different machine, then he can't see the link from his local machine. How can I add machine information into the ln command, so user can always access the file no matter he rlogin which machine.

I am sure this has been covered before, however I do not know which terms to sue for searching for this, so I will try and explain it.
I have a program that I run at startup to connect me to my work VPN, specifically the Cisco VPN client. When running the program, it prompts me for my username and password. I would like to be able to automate the login process by piping the username and password into the program everytime it starts up (username and password cannot be passed as arguments to the program)
Something like echo username | echo password | vpn_script

Dmidecode is a tool for dumping a computer's DMI (some say SMBIOS ) table contents in a human-readable format. This table contains a description of the system's hardware components, as well as other useful pieces of information such as serial numbers and BIOS revision. Thanks to this table, you can retrieve this information without having to probe for the actual hardware. While this is a good point in terms of report speed and safeness, this also makes the presented information possibly unreliable.
The DMI table doesn't only describe what the system is currently made of, it also can report the possible evolutions (such as the fastest supported CPU or the maximal amount of memory supported).
SMBIOS stands for System Management BIOS , while DMI stands for Desktop Management Interface. Both standards are tightly related and developed by the DMTF (Desktop Management Task Force). code...

I have a large amount of log files that I need to remove sensitive data from. The sensitive data is provided to me in a text file and is prone to change. I had hoped to do the equivalent of this:

The commented out egrep works fine, the sed doesn't. Am I right to use sed for this? Or is there a more apt route to take?

When I do System > Applications > Update System, it brings up a list of updates, and can tell me what each update is meant to fix (i.e. "fixes a bug in the flux capacitor so time travel works again (CVE-01234)"). How do I get similar info from the command line- I can't get it through yum, can I?

I'm sure this answer is out there but I cannot find it. I thought there was a command you could put in the terminal to find out what version of Fedora you are running and also tell which architecture (either 32 bit or 64 bit) it is. Does anyone know what that command is?

As a strategy for learning linux I have decided to adopt using a lean windows based approach. I want to focus on command line machine system, network basics, and file management knowledge. In other words find out how desktop manager does it's business, so I know how to master my machine, but by and large once I have made my choices, leave it alone to do just that.
I figure I should know how applications are internally configured etc., but I also figure an apps GUI and config choices should take care of installations, and program usage as in M$ windows. Surely taking care of an applications dependencies are the responsibility of the developer, are they not?
I am working my way through "Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition (Version 1.0.0)" right now for an overall viewpoint. Can anyone suggest a specific source for a point by point explanation of the command basis of a generalised "desktop management" application (KDE,LXDE)? Better yet would be if it had some parallel comparison of the varied approaches taken by different distributions of linux.
A secondary question, is that allowed? Up to a certain point in Ms windows, a thorough knowledge of DOS 6.xx would theoreticaly enable one to more or less duplicate the actions of the windows overlay. Is there a basic distribution (or subset in all of them maybe?) of linux that would be consistent with that paradigm? What would be analogous to DOS batch files, or GM-Basic? Oh! that's 3.I am certainly appreciating the depth of this forum, and the breadth of knowledge among you forumite's. Reading it is time well spent.

I have some file tools on a mint machine that I would rather not install on my mac laptop. Mainly because of the vastness of apt-get and the low risk of installation failure. Anyway, every so often I have a file that I want to process in place using some remote tool. Both machines can ssh right in to each other so I was figuring there must be some script or tool out there that would allow me to type out something like remote [file] [tool & args] to send my file to the other machine, get it processed, then get it back.

this is a procedure that was put in place before i got here. We basically just install windows and then use this command to create the image
dd if=/dev/sda | gzip -c | split -b 2000m /mnt/foldername/filename.img.gz.
i have been using this for a close to 2 years but have recently run into a problem where i am only getting part of the image. This is the first windows 7 64 bit machine that i have done it on so im not sure if that has to do with it.
the error im getting is dd: reading '/dev/sda' : input/output error
it is erroring out at the exact same point everytime i try it.

If I type this manually on the command line, it works
Quote:
ssh -Y user@machine 'firefox &'
I ssh into the remote machine as the named user and pop an instance of firefox from that machine back to my own. If I put the same thing into a shell script though, it fails.
Quote:
#!/bin/bash
ssh -Y user@machine 'firefox &'
I'm just left sitting at a command line on the remote machine. Why does the script fail and how can I make it work?
