General :: USB Devices Read-only In Maverick?

Nov 16, 2010

I have a 7 port USB hub that is connected to my Dell GX260 that was working perfectly until the other day. I have Maverick running on the pc and before that Lucid. I had no problems read/writing to USB Flash drives that were plugged into the hub. Now I can only write to them through Nautilus (root), otherwise it tells me 'permission denied'

Ubuntu :: USB Devices Auto-mount As Read-only?

My 10.04 64-bit desktop has been auto-mounting USB devices (flash drives and my mp3 player) as read-only for some reason. I had this issue happen once a while in the past, so I simply re-mounted it as rw.

Code:

CentOS 5 Hardware :: SW RAID - Raid Devices Larger Than Total Devices

Dec 7, 2010

I'm working on a server and noticed that the to RAID5 setup is showing 4 Raid devices but only 3 Total devices. It's on a fully updated CentOS 5 system that only has three SATA drives, as it can not hold anymore. I've done some researching but am unable to remove the fourth device, which is listed as removed. The full output of `mdadm -D /dev/md2` can be see below. I've never run into this situation before.Anyone have any pointers on how I can reduced the Raid Devices from 4 to 3? I have tried

mdadm /dev/md2 -r failed
mdadm /dev/md2 -r detached

but neither work and since there is no block device listed I'm not quite sure how to get things back in sync so it's only seeing the three drives.

Version : 0.90

Ubuntu / Apple :: Maverick: MacBook 5,1 (and Mac General): Mouse?

Nov 1, 2010

I've seen many (unanswered) threads about this, so I'm asking again, specifically relating to Maverick on a MacBook 5,1 (and probably others) regarding the following:

Touchpad sensitivity Horizontal tracking across multiple displays is 2-3x faster than vertical tracking. Note that vertical tracking stays the same regardless of multi-monitor orientation; horizontal tracking seems to be the only thing affected by multi-monitor placement. This problem does not exist in single-monitor mode--x and y tracking is 1:1. There are no GUIs, xinput or other parameters I can find to adjust the x tracking resolution in multi-monitor mode, unless I'm just missing something. At this point I've tweaked every available parameter in xinput to see what they did, and none of them affected only the x resolution the way I would like.

Magic Mouse scrolling I have found several unanswered threads about this problem. Magic Mouse scrolling is terrible, and can't be adjusted using any of the GUIs available, nor by xinput. The ONLY existing solution is exclusive to Firefox. As above, I tried every xinput parameter for the driver available and could not get the scroll tracking to adjust at all. It's still static, at roughly 3-5 "lines" per tick, and the tick resolution is too great (my finger slides nearly the entire length of the mouse for only three or four ticks).

I am willing to look at source and compile new drivers if someone can point me in the right direction. Google is useless here, as the top 100 or so results all refer to the same handful of threads here on this forum, all of which remain unanswered to this day. If anybody out there has any new information regarding these problems, I'd love to hear about it, even if it's tucked away in some obscure blog nobody reads (which is why it wouldn't show up in the first dozen pages of Google results).

General :: Multiple USB Wireless Devices?

Aug 25, 2010

I have a broadcom wireless card in my laptop and as far as I know, it acts as an USB device. I also have one USB stick wireless device (TL-WN422G - uses ath9k_htc driver) which I want to use at the same time as the first (Broadcom) device.

The problem is, after I load ath9k_htc - iwconfig does not show the new USB device (the TL-WN422G - wlan1 / ath0 / whatever), but only the old one (wlan0 - Broadcom, checked by MAC).

I tried this USB device (TL-WN422G) on my other computer that has PCI wireless card in it, and they both worked just fine together after I pluged it in... I get wlan0 (Ralink) and wlan1 (TL-WN422G). Is it some kind of a problem for the laptop that both devices are recognized as USB? How do I make wlan1 appear on my laptop?

also, my system is fully up to date 2.6.35 kernel (Arch)

edit: I've already downloaded the needed ar9271.fw from linuxwireless.org and I put it into /lib/firmware - something wrong in that?

dmesg gives me this on laptop:

usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9
usb 1-5: ath9k_htc: Firmware - ar9271.fw not found
ath9k_hif_usb: probe of 1-5:1.0 failed with error -22

General :: Cannot Find Grldr In All Devices

Sep 17, 2010

I'm running wubi on XP machine. Started out originally with 8.04, and gradually upgraded to 10.04. Recently, I was creating linux bootable USB drive, and put it in my system to see if it would work. After booting the LiveOS, and rebooting my machine, I know get the error Cannot find grldr in all devices when booting Ubuntu. I don't know what grldr is, but I assume it is the GRUB Loader.

Did booting the LiveOS screw with my MBR perhaps?

How can I fix this, and if not, is it possible to reinstall wubi, without losing anything of what I have now?

General :: What Is Stored In /sys/devices/pci0000:00

Mar 26, 2010

Ubuntu 9.04 on a Dell Netbook

While studying where all my (16 GB solid state) disk space is used with Disk Usage Analyzer I found that about a half gigabyte was under sys/devices/pci0000:00/pci0000:00:01.0. In fact it was taken up by two files resource2 and resource2_wc. Both files are dated today.

Can anyone enlighten me to what these subdirectories and files are? My desktop with conventional rotating hard drives do not have any space used under /sys/devices so I am guessing the subdirectories and files are related to the Solid State drive.

If I stop eth0, will that automatically stop all the others?

General :: Add Devices To Computers /dev Folder Over A Network?

May 24, 2011

I was wondering if it were possible to add devices to my computers /dev folder over a network. In linux philosophy, everything is treated as a file, and if I can have my /home/user1 and /home/user2 folders located somewhere on the network, why not the devices in /dev? The idea is that I might control, say, a cd drive in another computer or, a monitor on another computer. Can anyone give me some thoughts on adding devices to my /dev folder over a network? The aim is to make something evil of course! (like a 10 monitor PC)

General :: Having Music Library In Sync On Several Devices?

Jun 24, 2011

I have several devices (server, tower, notebook, android phone). I want to have my music library in sync on all of them. So what I thought of was a revision control system that just takes care of CRUD actions (or rather CRD). Maybe it could keep track of the files using their initial name and tracking any renaming or deletion. All popular software I know (git, svn, cvs, ...) is out of question because they save too much overhead (they diff the binary files).

Streaming doesn't work either for me because I don't always have an internet connection. Synchronizing the music using tools like unison is very inefficient too because I write metadata to the files so their hashsum, timestamp and size change constantly. If there is a diff or sync tool that ignores minor changes in size and ignores timestamp and permissions and so on, it would maybe be fine but I don't know one.

General :: Mount Devices In A Chroot Jail?

Apr 20, 2010

I would like to create a logon script, for specific user, under ssh connection, to backup several directories in a USB device; this backup will run when the device was plugged in and the user logs in server. My knowledge of linux isn't very deeply now, and some questions are in my head. I would like to make this in a chroot jail, and the user log in through ssh connection doesn't have to make nothing, the logon script will mount the USB device and make the backup (using rsync or whatever), and exit the ssh connection when it finish.

Anyway the questions are:

- is possible that a user in a chroot jail mount a USB device?

- from this jail, the directories outside of the jail could be available or need to be bind or something for this task?

- it will be better to "jail" all the directories to backup, inside de chroot path (almost would be samba sharing for Windows clients)?
