Ubuntu :: Using Tracker (Searching Tool) In 10.04 Lucid?

Apr 21, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx for some time and I have some problems with Tracker (the searching tool):
1. It looks like it reindexes after every turning on a computer. It always starts at 0/55234 files.
2. It doesn't index e-mails in Evolution. I'm using IMAP, but all mail is marked for offline use. So it's on the harddisk. And it worked in older versions of Ubuntu.
3. GUI is totally different than the one which is shown on the website of Tracker [URL]. How is it possible? Is Ubuntu using some old version? Moreover the Czech translation is lost in Lucid. It was 100% translated in Karmic, and now it's completely English.

OpenSUSE :: Losing All The Window Decorators On Selecting Compiz?

I recently installed the brand new Open Suse 11.3 on my new Dell Studio. I installed Compiz and other packages from official repo. But after installing when I used the desktop configuration utility to change the default Window Manager to Compiz all the window decorators like window title , minimize maximize, close buttons were gone. I tried searching for emerald fusion theme manager only to find out tht these have been dropped and older repos have been deleted.

I am not liking the default Window manager. I wanted to get themes like before. I have been using Suse for the last 6 years but this is the first time I am not able to get what I want. I just dont like this default manager. I want the look which looks better than Windows 7 ...

General :: Selecting A Distro For An Ancient Computer?

Apr 11, 2010

I've got this old computer. PII processor, 4gb HDD, I forget how much ram but the mobo is an AOpen AX63 pro [URL].. The machine still runs great. I just finished cleaning all the connections with alcohol and putting the thing back together. I've got Ubuntu 5.10 on it right now, but with so little in the way of system resources, I want to get something more scaled down on there. Googling hasn't resulted in anything really useful.

So, does anybody know of a scaled down distro aimed at old computers? Obviously something current would be great (I considered trying to find a netbook distro and use that, but I don't know if there would be any issues using that kind of thing on a desktop.) but I'd be willing to use an older distro if I need to. I really just want to use it as a writing machine, with maybe some basic internet access.

General :: Unable To Use Popup Menu When Selecting Text?

Feb 24, 2011

I've been using Linux for about six years now, and I joined this website hoping to learn more about Linux, keep updated with Linux news, others less experienced than me; I spend so much time on Reddit I rarely remember there's a whole Internet how there and I've yet to really visit this website since I registered. I'm posting this in the newbie section because the problem I'm having feels like it probably has a simple solution, but I don't what to do. If this forum is inappropriate, I suppose a mod could move it?

Anyway, upon highlighting a link in either Firefox 4 nightly or Chromium, I get this pop-up menu: [URL](copy paste and remove the space between the h and the t - and yes, this is a "screenshot" taken with a camera, as this menu seems to inhibit the functioning of the PrintScreen key for some reason) I do not need to click - as soon as a URL is highlighted, the menu pops up, forcing me to click away in order to cancel the menu. At first I assumed it was a Firefox thing - it happens in both 3.6 and 4 Nightly - so I began checking all of my add-ons (only 4) and plugins to see if I have some plugin causing this. Nothing seemed to be.

When I switched to Chromium, I quickly realized the same thing happens in Chromium, as well, so it's independent of what browser I'm using. This leads me to believe it's some package I have installed (apt-get, I'm using Linux Mint on this laptop, and on my other computers, which are running Arch, I do not encounter this in either Chromium or Firefox4) that's causing this, so if someone could just identify what package it is I can remove it. Or maybe my assumption is incorrect and there's something else that leads to this popup, but either way, it's really annoying and I want it gone!

General :: Selecting A Font When Printing A Text File From The Command Line?

Jul 29, 2011

I don't understand why this is so difficult. In the old days, there was lpforms which allowed some formatting. CUPS did not see fit to implement this into it's lp package.cgi-...-cgi?lpforms+1In the old days, lpr allowed you to select a font in the command line with -1=fontname. CUPS did not see fit to implement this into it's lpr package.htmIn the old days, printers had fonts installed on them that you could access. Modern printers don't seem to have this. So now I still need to be able to select a font when I print certain text files from the command line but it seems this is impossible. I've been working with instances and lpoptions, which allows me to do a lot of other things I need like orientation and margins and even set the font size, but I still cannot choose a font other than the default.

General :: Searching For Number Within A File?

Nov 9, 2010

I'm currently trying to design a small, simple enough shell program for area codes. I have a list of area codes in a database, and I am trying to write a program that will have a user input an area code, and then have the program print out information that immediately follows that area code in my database. I assume I need to use a find or locate command, but I'm not sure if I should be searching for a string or the number itself. The number could possibly occur at some other point in the file, though the way I have the file set up it only occurs once at the newline.

what function I should use and how I should go about it? As is I only have the absolute bare-bones beginning of having an echo for the prompt to input an area-code, and the read once it's input. Without the find I'm not sure how much farther I can get. Also, would it make it easier if I added some character such as a ! to the end of the number at the newline to make it easier to search for? With a macro that would be easy enough to do.

General :: Saving And Searching Encrypted Mail?

Dec 24, 2010

I often send and receive gpg-encrypted mail. At the moment I use thunderbird + enigmail (in linux) to do that. As far as I know there is no way in thunderbird to find all encrypted messages which bodies contain particular keywords. There also seems to be no option to save encrypted mails decrypted (so they would be searchable). However for me it is important to be able to search old encrypted mails.

Is there a way in linux to save incoming mails automatically decrypted in my inbox and save outgoing encrypted mail decrypted in the send folder? Both times adding a line to the body which remarks that the mail was encrypted. It could be another email client for linux that could to that or perhaps a solution using procmail or maildrop. For a procmail solution I guess there could be some problems with encoding (perhaps one have to use emil?). Note that the solution should work for multipart encrypted messages (including encrypted attachments) too. The point is that the mails are encrypted on the mailserver or more generally on their "way through the net".

General :: Recursively Searching PHP Or HTML Files

May 5, 2010

I'm a frequent user of grep. I know that I can recursively search a directory using the -r flag:
Code:
// will recursively search all files
grep -r 'some string' *

However, if I want to limit my search to PHP files, the -r flag is suddenly useless:
Code:
// for some reason, this only searches the PHP files in the current dir
grep -r 'some string' *.php

Any good way to recursively search a directory and its subdirs for a string but ONLY look at PHP or HTML files (and possibly TXT files too) ? I'm really hoping for a nice, short command that doesn't involve using an exclude file and which isn't really painful to type. I do this kind of search very frequently and have resorted to either searching EVERY file which is really slow (TAR and ZIP files really slow it down) OR typing repeated commands to search *.php, */*.php, etc.

General :: Disallow Closing Last Emacs Window Via Window-Manager Close Button

Jul 8, 2011

I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).

I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.

I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.

The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.

As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse

Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?

On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.
