General :: Setting An Executable To Be In Another's Path?

Dec 6, 2010

I have program (command line) that requires another program be installed and in its path. So I downloaded the file (.tgz), and extracted. I followed the compile and make instructions and ended up with a folder on my desktop that contains the excutable but is not in the path of the the other program. How can I do this..I think that I have about 20 more .tgz files to do this with.

Ubuntu Servers :: Change Executable Path For Boot Scripts?

May 17, 2010

I have a startup script which calls other scripts which need to run some utilities I have. I've tried changing the executable path by adding it to .bashrc:

Code:

echo "PATH=$PATH:$new_path" | tee -a /root/.bashrc /home/$user/.bashrc
echo "export PATH" | tee -a /root/.bashrc /home/$user/.bashrc

But this only works for finding executables once the boot process is over. The startup scripts don't see this path.

General :: Executing Shell Script - Setting Permissions And Providing Path

Jan 4, 2011

I've been looking around the net for executing a shell script. My basic understanding is that after setting executable permissions and providing a path (#!/bin/sh) in the first line of the script, I can type ./myscript to execute instead of sh myscript. This is not working for me. I can run "sh myscript" but not "./myscript" even though I know for sure I have across the board execute permission and my sh path is correct. I'm working on a redhat linux station.

Software :: Setting Group ID For Executable File Working Under Solaris?

Jul 14, 2010

why do I get "Permission denied"?

Code:
[andreas@loony /tmp]$ ls -al
total 40
drwxrwxrwt 4 root root 4096 Jul 14 10:28 .
drwxr-xr-x 28 root root 4096 May 18 10:55 ..

[Code]....

A colleague told me that this does not work for shell scripts (even though apparently it does work for shell scripts under Solaris). However, this is not the problem per se, because I discovered this problem when using a binary program that needs the s-bit feature. I only made the small shell script to make sure that I understand everything that is going on and that it is not the binary program that is behaving badly... but I do believe that the problem is not in the program but in the operating system.

Set uid works. It is only set gid that does not work. That is, setting the s-bit for the owner works, but setting the s-bit for the group does not.

Debian :: Setting PATH Environment Variable

May 19, 2015

I have been trying to change my PATH environment variable to no avail. I am using Jessie i386 with MATE. Using my .bashrc file works but not well because with subshells the modifications get repeated. I want the change to occur on login.

I tried modifying ~/.profile ~/.bash_profile /etc/profile and /etc/environment and one or two others but in no case did my change get picked up even after logging out and in again and even after rebooting. I searched the Internet and found each of the above places to make the change but they don't seem to work with Jessie.

Where do I make the necessary change?

General :: Move A File To Some Path And Create That Path When It Doesn't Exist?

Oct 8, 2010

I use this command:

Code:

find ./ -atime +360

to figure out the files that haven't been accessed since 360 days. The command above will return results like this:

Code:

/uploads/2010/02/some-file-name.ext
/uploads/2009/08/another-file-name.ext
... etc

I'm taking here about tins of directories, thousands of files. I'm looking to find a command that makes me able to move the results above to another path, and to create that path once it doesn't exist like below:

Code:

mv /uploads/2010/02/some-file-name.ext /old-files/uploads/2010/02/some-file-name.ext

But I want the executed command to create this path

Code:

/old-files/uploads/2010/02/

If it doesn't exist.

General :: Forcing An Absolute Path Where A Relative Path Is Expected

Feb 21, 2011

I have a program that takes a relative path as input appends it to a some path string to get the actual path.

Now all I can input is the relative path. So if I want to go one level above my input will be ../mypath.

If I know the depth of the path used internally, I can use .. as many times to go to the root directory and then give the absolute path. But suppose I do not know the depth of the directory, can I construct a relative path string such that it considers it as a relative path. One way could be to have enough .. in the path string so that I can force an absolute path for some maximum depth of path.

Is there some path string syntax that I am not aware of but can achieve this?
