General :: Running Script That Controls Mouse / Keyboard In Background
May 24, 2010
I have a script that makes several calls to xmacroplay, which controls the keyboard and mouse. I would like to run this in the background or on a separate workspace or something so I can still use my machine for other things. I suspect this is possible but I don't really know what to look for.
Why do I have a log in screen and no mouse on PCLinuxOS live install. I have the blue background and the graphics but no mouse and just a log in screen. I can log in root/root or guest/guest but not much else whats up.
My mouse cursor has acquired some strange background image showing what looks to be paragraphs of chinese glyphs (they are too small to make out clearly). This background image is contained in rougly a 1 inch square with the mouse cursor hot spot in the upper left-hand corner. The mouse cursor is visible, but whatever is under those glyphs is covered.
I've tried the mouse configuration gui -- but it says nothing of background images for the mouse. I've also deleted and recreated my xconfig.org file to see if that somehow got mangled. I've been searching the web for a couple of hours, but cant seem to find anything related to my problem.
I have a LAMP server with some php files. When I do this:
> php -f filename.php
It works great. But of course, it stops when I close the SSH window. I need to be able to run it and leave it running. The script is a crawler and it takes about 3 hours to complete it. So I tried this:
> php -f filename.php &
This doesn't work at all. It doesn't even execute the script.
I've noticed a bit of a problem here in the last few days...after some point, my numeric keypad stops being a numeric keypad; instead, it controls the mouse (5 right clicks, and the outer keys move the cursor in the appropriate direction). It doesn't appear to happen on boot, as I generally type the numeric bits of my password with the keypad, but some point after. The only common events I can think of where this has occurred is either after connecting to the system via SSH, or after swapping to tty1 (which usually requires re-enabling of numberlock for the terminal to recognize digits, again for the password). No matter what state the NumLock is in (off or on) at this point, the keypad fails to function as a keypad.
Today I installed Maverick on my new MBP. I followed the instruction in this Help page:Maverick but seem to be having trouble getting the keyboard backlight hotkeys to work (LCD Brightness, Media keys, and Sound keys appear to work correctly).
How do you move a running process to the background? For example, type the command sleep 60 on the command line and try moving that process to the background.
I am using a wireless Xbox 360 controller with openSUSE 11.1. I use it for some emulators and all buttons work fine. There is however an annoying problem, the Xbox controller left joystick controls the cursor and digital pad acts as mouse buttons. So while I play, the cursor moves all around the screen and bad things could happen. Why this behavior? In xorg.conf there seems to be only just 1 mouse. And if I go in Joystick via YaST, there is only a menu to select which joystick I have. But my wireless controller has been automatically detected, I didn't setup anything. Is there a config file that I can modify to stop controlling the mouse with my gamepad?
I wonder how one can, if at all, run an X program in the background *in an emulator sub-shell process*. What I mean is to launch a program in an emulator, e.g, by xterm -e gedit
but with gedit (in this example) running in the background from inside the xterm sub-process, so that the xterm will accept other commands. In the above, gedit will run in the foreground, and of course, if you do xterm -e gedit &
then xterm will run in the background, not gedit. In short, I would like to achieve the same thing as "gedit &" as you manually do in xterm, but from another shell. What I aim to do is write an X init script to achieve this result (to have the emulator open and a program or two running from it, in the background, at the X startup).
I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu.iso and extracted it to /tmp/ubuntu/ on my laptop. In the folder isolinux there is an isolinux.cfg file. I am trying to prepare a USB stick by modifying those files, so that when I boot from USB it opens VNC and puts a static IP of 192.168.1.125. How can I enable VNC and a static IP so that from my laptop I can do the installation of Ubuntu 11.04 without using a keyboard or mouse?[URL]..
I recently installed Mepis (Lenny I believe) on my vaio n320 and was extremely excited that my Fn keys seemed to work right off the bat. I could adjust brightness just fine, but when I attempted to control the volume, nothing happened. I can adjust the volume from the mixer, but no Fn key.
I had a partition setup with Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04 dual booting. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 by installing fresh from CD but leaving the previous /home folder as is. Things seemed to be working fine, but started finding that my mouse and keyboard were freezing. After a quick search on the internet, I found the following suggestions as shown here:- Ubuntu Forums
Here the suggestion was to:- Edit /etc/default/grub, go to the line that begins like: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= Change it to:
[Code]...
This seemed to have resolved the issue but after a couple of days I again find my mouse and keyboard freezing. I also find that my parallel port printer had also stopped working. I have saved the output of dmesg and my syslog. The first can be viewed here but the syslog had too many characters,
In Gnome I have Gnome apps to configure keyboard and mouse as "gnome-keyboard-properties" and "gnome-mouse-properties". How do I configure them in Fluxbox? Acceleration of a mouse, keyboard repeat delay, repeat speed, etc...
I have a ubuntu loaded in KDE and this is in dual boot with Windows vista. I was "upgrading" my Linux (through update manager) when my computer just shut down. And when i restarted the computer to login to the Linux all I got was blank screen. I logged into recovery mode and selected the option to fix the packages. I rebooted my system and then again logged into the Linux. This time I could get the login screen but my mouse as well as Keyboard was not recognized. Essentially i cannot type or scroll and cannot login into Linux.
I've upgraded my ubuntu from 9.04 -> 9.10. But after reboot, my mouse & keyboard become freeze. I did some search and found some advice about mannauly configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf but unsuccess.
Here are some log

I am COMPLETELY new to Linux.I started a computer class recently and I started teaching myself PERL.My teacher had mentioned to me that it's far better for some reasons (he did not elaborate) to write code in a Unix system. So I got Ubuntu 10.10.I installed it along side my windows 7.After I setup my windows (had to reformat the disk) I decided to boot up into Ubuntu to set that up. I installed the necessary drivers that it required, and the updates. I was asked to restart the system so I did so.
It did not even shut down or restart my system.I waited patiently 15 minutes...30 minutes 1 hour... until I finally decided to hit the reset button on my PC. Then when I'd boot back in to Ubuntu afterwards, it would stay at the log in screen and my mouse wouldn't budge and nor is my keyboard recognized by Ubuntu.Im really frustrated and I've been searching for answers for the whooole day and I just can't seem to find something well explained. Im completely new to Ubuntu so I don't know where to enter any code in a cmd line or such.
1)Reformatted my harddrive to install windows 7 on it 2)Set up windows 7 and then booted into Ubuntu. 3) Set up Ubuntu and installed necessary drivers and updates 4) Reset the computer and waited for an hour for the reset to happen but nothing happened. 5) Manually reset my pc and booted into ubuntu 6) Stuck at log in screen with mouse and keyboard not functioning (unable to use ubuntu).
I am running Linux Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron laptop that I bought at a garage sale for 50 cents. After spending quite a few hours resurrecting it, it works just fine except for the left and right mouse buttons on the touch pad. They do not function. Is there a way to emulate the left and right mouse buttons from the keyboard?(I know that I can just plug in a mouse, but I would rather just use the keyboard if possible.)
using Kubuntu 10.04. When my computer was being updated sudden power failure forced my system to reboot and in the log in screen I can find that my keyboard and mouse is not working at all. I cannot enter into my system. I tried to enter ctrl+F1 but failed.
My screen is frequently freezing and even the keyboard or mouse doesn't work. I've been told to read the logs, But I don't know where thy are or what to look for?
I am running Fedora F14 on an Intel I3 cpu w/4Gb memory and plenty of disk. I have two displays connected to the Gigabyte Motherboard, one of the HDMI connector, and one on a DVI connector. I run Gnome. When Compiz is enabled things work fine for a while, meaning hours or days. Then the displays will "freeze" to the point where the clock stops updating. The system itself is still running programs, services, and the mouse and keyboard work. The mouse cursor will move around, but nothing can be clicked upon. If a terminal was the open window, typing on the keyboard does not do anything, nor does ctrl-backspace or whatever it is to terminate X windows. The keyboard does allow me to press ctrl-alt-F2 to switch to one of the base consoles. Once there I can type to my hearts content. I can kill off my logged in Gnome session through the console, and I can shutdown the system in a controlled manner.
It is as if all of the windows stop updating. For example, I play music through Amarok. An hour after I stop using the system but letting the music play the screens will do their lockup. The clock will stop, and Amarok will stop updating which song it is playing. It continues to play each song in the playlist, but the Amarok window shows what was playing at the time that the clock stopped. I've also had this happen to me while using Yumex, where it would stop updating the screen while installing programs, but the programs do get installed. With Compiz off I don't have this problem.
The version of Compiz I am using is currently 0.8.6-3. It is running on Gnome 2.32.0-2, with a Linux kernel of 2.6.35.9-64. It has happened with earlier versions of these programs. I am using the graphics processing the Intel i3 chip to the motherboard connectors. The freeze generally happens at some random time while I am not actively using the system. It has happened to me while doing simple things like programming through an IDE. The really strange thing to me is that the cursor will move around on the screen after everything else stops updating.
