General :: ReadyNAS Duo - Under What Circumstances Resync Really Needed?

Feb 25, 2010

On the ReadyNAS Duo, a RAID resync synchronizes the entire contents of one disk to another. It's a slow operation. So it's not something to be done lightly. By default, it is done whenever the unit is shut down uncleanly (generally the result of a hang or power interruption). It's something that can be disabled, though, such that a resync would be done only when manually requested. The authors of the software RAID driver in Linux (called "md") came up with a nice solution to the problem of slow RAID resyncs: the md driver allows you to assign a write intent bitmap to an md device, and where it's stored is configurable (the default is to store it on the md device in question, in the superblock). So when the array goes down unexpectedly (e.g., in a power outage), only the blocks that the md device was going to write will actually be resynced.

It's sort of like a journal for the md device itself. Now, the ReadyNAS Duo doesn't seem to use Linux md at all for implementing the RAID volume, but it does have an option to disable automatic resync in the event of an improper shutdown. And that leads to my question: how necessary is it to do a resync in such an event? If the Duo uses the same method as the Linux md driver, then obviously such a resync would rarely be necessary. But if it doesn't, then it would be the equivalent of using the md driver without a write-intent bitmap, and a resync would almost certainly be necessary in the event of an improper shutdown. Does the Duo (and maybe other units) use the equivalent of a write intent bitmap for RAID write operations?

General :: Automate Computer To Power Off (and On Preferably) Under Certain Circumstances?

Dec 31, 2010

I've been using Windows Home Server as a Backup Appliance, Media Server and Share Server at home for some time. I decided it was costing me allot of juice so very early on added the "Lights Out" add-on to ensure it was only running as and when needed.

I'm now looking to switch to a Linux based server and I'm looking for a similar tool/set of tools for advanced power management.

Now the question;

Anyone got any all-in-one suggestions (i.e with client parts for both Windows and Linux and a server part for the Linux server), or can anyone simply verify that I'll need to set-up all the individual bits for this myself separately?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To Netgear ReadyNAS Duo

Nov 4, 2010

I have managed to connect to the above NAS using the supplied RAIDar software from my base unit. The unit is duel boot with Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP. Both operating systems work with the NAS both by wireless and wired using RAIDar and any other relevant programme

However my laptop, running Ubuntu, will not find it using Raidar, the IP address in a browser nor with a file manager or any other programme. I have tried both wired and wireless connections

However if I go to "places" from the top bar, which opens Nautilus, I can access it and all the files on it.

Server :: How To Use RootSH Under All Circumstances

Mar 29, 2011

I'm administrator for a bunch of servers, all RHEL5.5, with our specific software. Since this is a cooperation with one of the largest hardware vendors in the world they also have root access which for 'political' reasons I cannot change or keep from them. Now, I installed rootsh on a test server and it works fine when called the normal way (sudo rootsh). However I want to invoke the rootsh also when the regular user uses:

Code:
sudo su
sudo su -
su -
su

I 'moved' su to another location and created a symbolic link named su to rootsh which works fine when executing:
Code:
sudo su --
but fails on all other calls mentioned above. How I can proceed?

Ubuntu Networking :: Use Of NFS Freezes Client Under Various Circumstances?

Oct 14, 2010

I'm using a Kubuntu 10.10 Client Machine which mounts NFS shares form a Kubuntu 10.04 Server. The server seems to work smoothly but the client causes huge problems since I upgraded to 10.10 (before I used 8.04 which worked withouth problems). My problems are, that in various situations the use of the NFS shares causes the Client to freeze completely!Examples:Unzipping a big file from the NFS server to the NFS server via the client -> always immediate freeze (after some seconds)Transfering big files from one NFS folder to another -> mostly immediate freeze (after some seconds)Viewing a movie which is on the NFS server -> sometimes freeze after variably amounts of timeLetting the Strigi-Indexer index files on the NFS shares -> mostly freeze after a short whileIt seems that everything that puts some load (high data transfer) on NFS immediatly locks up the whole client.

Ubuntu :: How To Use Resync To Backup

Mar 27, 2011

So, I figure it's high time I learn to use this utility (or something else, doesn't matter to me). I want to backup a photo directory from an internal to external drive.

When I explore in Ubuntu, it names my external drive SimpleDrive . . . the destination directory on that drive I call Backup PhotoBank 31811. I think I had a leading zero that Ubuntu drops for the date (031811).My source drive is referred to by Ubuntu as 320 GB Filesystem, and the source directory on that drive is referred to as PhotoBank.

When I use these designations on the command line, rsync returns error messages stating that no such file or drive exists (note, I have not referenced any files within the directories). If I click on properties for the 320 GB Filesystem, there is another name designated, a very long combination of numbers and letters.I've tried using that name, but still get the same error messages from rsync.

Is there a front end for this program that is more graphical in nature? I don't mind using the command line, as I know that once I get this sorted out, it should be no problem, but I'm not too proud to resort to the ultimate in simplicity.

I am seeking to copy the files from the internal one time, then, I plan to delete the files from the internal, load it back up, copy the new files to the external, and so forth. I'm not really looking to sync the two drives.

Ubuntu :: Raid 1 Very Slow Resync

Sep 20, 2010

I have a low power machine I use as an SFTP server. It currently contains two raid 1 arrays, and I am working on adding a third. However, I'm having a bit more trouble with this array than I did the prior arrays. My suspicion is that I have a bad drive, I am just not sure how to confirm it.I have successfully formatted both drives with EXT3 and performed disk checks on both which did not indicate a problem.

I can see it progressing in the blocks count, but it's incredibly slow. In the course of 5 minutes it progressed from 1024/1953511936 to 1088/1953511936.Checking top, not even 10% of my CPU is being used. Are there any other performance items I could check that could be affecting this?

Hardware :: Software Raid 5 Resync Happens Often?

Oct 17, 2010

I have 2 servers both with software raid 5 for the main storage partitions. 6 x 1.5 Tbyte drives. I observe that the these arrays seem to resync quite often. cat /proc/mdstat or smartctl -a does not show any problems with the drives. Is this normal. What is the default period between resyn. What would cause a resyn of the array. The standard resync time for the array is over 900 minutes which can become an inconvience for the server users if it occurs on a week day as it degrades the performance.

Debian :: Resync Hangs After Copying A Certain Number Of Files

Nov 9, 2015

I currently have a problem in running rsync on 64 bit Debian Jessie (although the problem also occurred with 64 bit Debian Wheezy)I am trying to use rsync to archive my home directory (which is on a hard disk) to a USB memory stick. The home directory is about 18GB in size and the memory stick has 32GB.

Unfortunately, rsync hangs after copying a certain number of files and the process eventually has to be killed. Rsync was rerun but hung again at about the same point as before. This has now happened several times. Each time the hang occurs at about the same point.Use of strace after the hang shows that rsync appears to be processing a pdf file at the time, although not always the same pdf file.I originally had the rsync hang problem on a PC which ran 64 bit Wheezy and which used a USB 2.0 port.

I now am running rsync on another PC, which runs 64 bit Jessie and which uses a USB 3.0 port..I have also tried three different USB sticks, two from one manufacturer and the third from another manufacturer. All give similar rsync hangs.

General :: Not Getting Access To The Needed Paths?

Jun 18, 2011

I have not been on in about a month or 2. I have no idea how to list this thread. I am hoping that someone like tex can help out. Being lazy with ubuntu seems to have been badong. Ok, I had 2 physical machines and 3 vms. VM's ran under Vbox-ose via a bridge. OS's are buntu x2 and one centOS box. I installed webmin to make things easy ( i thought ).However, after setting webmin, my I have been randomly loosing PATH's. I mean, one minuet i can run sudo apt-get and the next the whole PATH is gone. I tried a compare of my "home" box's bashrc and bash_profile against the other machins, and outside of some alias for colr and the like nothing seems to stand out. Even if I su - to root I am not getting access to the needed paths. Now, while I could export the correct path, I am more conserned with the why of it all.

I would have thought that as long as my group setting on my ssh users were all correct AND the environment had not been changed, all would be good. I can provide more info if someone wants to help me out with this. HOwever, it drove me to a six pack. 8SI have read the man pages. I have used google. I have checked the logs. The logs by the way showed a lil hammering on one of the boxes for root access. [I]t wasnt me. However, I dont seem to be able to see a time stamp.

General :: Hide The KDE 4.3.5 Menu Until Its Needed?

Mar 10, 2010

I installed the new Frugalware 1.2 via USB and that went well. I wanted an LXDE menu, as I don't like the "style" of the KDE menus, and the KDE menus seem slow, too.

The problem is that after installing LXDE, I have the LXDE menu from what I'd call the start button, which I like, but the KDE menu is now covering the entire screen on all desktops, and there seems no way to minimize it. I doubt I'll have to use it often, but don't want to lose all access to the programs on it. I haven't checked to see if all the programs are on the LXDE menu, but I noticed that Gfpm (the package manager) is now missing from the menu. Not sure if anything else has disappeared.

n Is there a way to minimize or hide the KDE menu?

I am trying to figure out how to make my terminal emulator dynamically transparent ( see through to the action below that window - Browser, video et cettera and not just the default wallpaper) . I figured out how to make transparent but not "dynamic". I have seen people mentioned you need to enable compositing but I am unsure how to do that in Gnome. I recall from a prior use of XFCE this was an option in that WM but I can't find in Gnome or compiz (if needed)

I am running Gnome on Debian Squeeze and have installed compiz. Any direction would be appreciated. I find reading web tutorials through the terminal to be very helpful so I can practice the command line or even practice commands while watching a good video .
