General :: Reading Hindi Language Document From Terminal

Mar 8, 2011

I having Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx at Dell laptop. i want to read documents written in hindi language. I have a font called Mangla installed in open-office that helps to read these files. But if I open them in gedit or display them by using following command, I cannot open them in readable format:- cat Hindi.txt

[Output] ....

I want this file should also be readable to a executable file of (CMU's toolkit). I have installed several types of fonts such as lohit_hi.ttf. The system does seem to be recognizing this language.

Whether I can't download 32bit version instead? If YES where shall I retain the package to install so that it can be detected on browsing?

General :: Why Is Reading A FILE Faster Than Reading A VARIABLE?

May 4, 2011

I don't understand the results of a simple performance test I ran using two basic scripts (running on a high end server):

perfVar.zsh :

#!/bin/zsh -f
MYVAR=`cat $1`
for i in {1..10}

[code]...

Performance test result:

> time ./perfVar.zsh BigTextFile > /dev/null
./perfVar.zsh FE > /dev/null 6.86s user 0.32s system 100% cpu 7.177 total
> time ./perfCat.zsh BigTextFile > /dev/null
./perfCat.zsh FE > /dev/null 0.01s user 0.10s system 91% cpu 0.118 total

I would have thought that accessing a VARIABLE was way faster than reading a FILE on the file system... Why this result ?Is there a way to optimize the perfCat.zsh script by reducing the number of accesses to the file system ?

Ubuntu :: Change Language Gnome Terminal 10.04

Apr 27, 2010

I just installed ubuntu 10.04 on our laptop. for convenience I also installed the dutch (gnome) translation and selected Dutch as the default language so all menu's and localisation is suitable for the Netherlands and the misses understands stuff. However I noticed that the gnome terminal is also translated so all output from bash is now in Dutch too. This is really inconvenient since I have been using bash in english on fedora and ubuntu for 10 years now. So is there a way to reconfigure gnome term (bash) to default back to english and leave the GUI in Dutch?

Ubuntu :: Terminal Is Stuck In A Foreign Language?

Feb 16, 2011

Some time back I posted a question about using a Greek keyboard since I'm trying to improve my limited Greek. Someone suggested a way of switching between the English and Greek desktop for Ubuntu. I tried that but it didn't work so well so I removed it. But I just tried to use the Terminal to install something and it's all in Greek!!! Now while I can read some of it my skills are not that good and I need it back in English again... Quickly actually! How do I go about removing the Greek from my terminal? Everything else on my system is in English so I can't figure why the terminal is stuck there.

Ubuntu :: Support For Language While Keeping English As Language Used To Display Desktop?

Mar 5, 2011

I have some music in another language, but when I open the songs in Banshee, their song names just come up as weird characters (like μ).I went to [System --> Administration --> Language Support] and installed support for that language, but the songs still come up like μ. (But in Nautilus, their proper names show).

I know the solution is to change my whole system language to that language, but I don't want to do that, as I am not very fluent in it. Is there any way to enable support for that language while keeping English as the language used to display my desktop?
